animated gifs aren't hard, create a series of frames then package 'en together, I think irfanview can, have to look. I know there's freeware, just not which.

I use a (very) old copy of Jasc Paint Shop Pro / Animation Shop. It's not free but could probably get it for $5 or $10 if you hunted around. (Corel now own the title, and in my opinion the current program doesn't have half the appeal of the old version). Corel has taken a handy little swiss army knife - and turned it into something bloated, buggy, slower and nowhere as simple as the original Jasc solution (I guess it comes down to what you are familiar with). Of course I'm not going to hand over my $$$ to use the corel product - the above comment is just the consensus on the user forums or "happy" corel users who remember the "old days" of Jasc.
I'm sure there are several available as freeware (maybe not as simple to use - but results just as good).

M$ GIF Animator is an oldie but goodie. I still use it for some things (e.g., checking hidden notes and quick testing self-created gifs) despite having about 4 other GIF animation programs at my fingertips, i.e. MGXDraw, ImageReady, GIMP, etc etc. GifAnimator isn't very intuitive, but I believe it's still free from the versiontracker download site you'll find via the above wiki.
Speaking of GIMP, GIMP GAP is free and offers tuts for creating GIFs -

just started playing around with it.....so far, so good.copmom- the image i "sent" for your birthday i just found somewhere on the net, saved to my pics and uploaded to photobucket. i occasionally do searches for these types of things and collect them for future use. given all the responses above, i'm going to have to start making some of my own.

I've still got the free JASC paint Shop Pro- too bad it isn't on Last Freeware Version- but then, I've had the motto 'once downloaded, forever saved' since DOS 5 days.
