they also come in target variants, there are sporting competitions using them, very long and widespread history of their use all over the world (different designs)?

bow or arrow?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Yep . it's a laminated recurve hunting bow- this one was commercially built, but I have one I made in jr. high wood shop, too. here's the closeup I cropped it from, roughly the area outlined in blue on the larger shot.
Hmmm, how about a rock, blackberry and moss wallpaper, a shot of the round-tu-it (sadly, closed), and some snow on the hills from this morning?
That last one was shot from the car at 65 mph on the way to the doc's.
It was mostly rain down on I-5 at the time.

Maizey.....trouble is too many times I don't have any pockets so I can't count on that. If I could I sure would rather do that than carry a purse especially since I need to use a cane now. Cane in one hand, purse in the other.....makes life rather difficult :) Been looking for the "perfect" shoulder bag but so far I haven't found it.
BTW, when I first read what you said about you being the type who hates a purse I wasn't at all surprised. I somehow pictured you that way. Funny how you can get such an idea of someone you've never met in person. lol
Posted 16 years ago # -
My mental picture of maizey is having tools in one hand and a camera in the other hand running around looking for a project to get into! Never thought about a purse!
BK.. didn't picture you with a cane in one hand.. handy to beat muggers away so they can't get to your purse!Posted 16 years ago # -
one thing I used back before the second fusion operation and I was really unstable (and the docs limited me to carrying less than 4 pounds with my arms since they botched the surgery) was a 3-section fisherman's fanny pack (I think I still have one on a shelf, brb) slung like a bandoleer.
left both hands free to clutch my cane. especially after bouncing on my left knee and getting back up. I wore an armored knee guard and still ripped it up a lot.
ah, here's a couple photos- whether this would suit, I don't know, I'm fashion-blind- function above all- but it worked.
quick-release on the strap. 1 large 1 medium zipper pocket, 1 medium 2 small velcro flap pockets, sunglasses holder, velcro loops on top for pole, packer's tripod, etc, couple general use clips, all water-resistant lined.

http://www.picattic.com/files/l0eflikyil1mq53kj5dg.jpgsorry about the dusties and being squashed, it's been 8 years stuffed away as a spare that never got used. and that scrap of paper towel was to get focus lock in the dim. sometimes I hate auto-focus, but I've learned some tricks.

That reminds me of something I have hanging in the closet.. the kids called it a 'fag bag' .. or fanny pack.
Good, what am I doing wrong? I tried to post something on 'what is it', and it came out so teensy after I cropped it, and then when I tried to enlarge it, it became all pixelated??? Like here: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg264/copmom_photo/whatIsItcrop.jpg
and here's the full sized one: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg264/copmom_photo/whatIsIt.jpgPosted 16 years ago # -
Coming back to the purse debate. I hate it to have many things with me. No, I don't have a hairdryer in my purse neither goody's picture.:( Usually I have a jacket with some pockets for tissues, a little water-bottle (needed), for a sense of security a cellphone and perhaps the purse. The key is hanging around my neck and the camera with some batteries and extra cards is in a small shoulder bag. For shopping I always have a city bag-back.

I'm afraid I carry so much 'stuff', that if I lost my purse I'd be in deep trouble. Seems like my whole life is in there!

Cross Body Bags and Messenger Style Bags for hands-free action! How about that from someone who "HATES" purses? :)
I would hope that you could find one for less money somewhere. There's NO WAY I'd ever pay hundreds of bucks for a sack to carry stuff in. I'd make my own first. I've got my Granny's old pedal sewing machine that sews through leather like it's butter. (Can't remember the last time I sewed butter.)

Here you go: http://sewing.about.com/od/freeprojects/ss/totebag.htm
or better yet, maybe you can carve one out of butter? Might not be too good on a hot summer day tho'.
Posted 16 years ago # -
well, at least those bags were fairly cheap- about 18 bucks then- I wore out 4.
now most local trips all I carry is a couple of surplus ammo pouches linked together with a small soft case for the camera on the side. keys on a carabiner on top, there's room for a cell if I had one...
the 'purse' is for day-plus trips.

Your gumboot after working in your garden
Posted 16 years ago # -
After being declared officially useless (permanently, totally disabled) and I no longer needed to hew to a company dress code, 'practical' (especially with my neck wired to a TENS unit for pain reduction- one thing it carried, plus batteries for same) became the overriding factor for dress.
I really do not care, never really did.
And that's what those are sold for, field outings- usually for the hip-wader set. But what it's sold for and what I can use it for are often very different, like using a post level to true the column on my tripod. clunky, cheap, works good.
If I go hiking, I use a military surplus web LBE harness. attach the pouches, ruck, (that's what that purse is, after all- straps on the back) etc., shrug it on, click the buckle, and I'm good to go.
looks like a stainless trowel, gardening variety. Ok. maybe chrome.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Goody, you are right, about everything! The improvising (your brains and hands work well) and the garden trowel. I am impressed by your projects, photos and your knowledge in so many areas. :)
Here's a cheap hand trowel. I was out playing in the dirt today.

Your prize is called "PLEASETOUCHME". Don't ask, it's just a toy. :)Posted 16 years ago # -
Well, what's left of my brains work ok- I honestly can state with certainty that I'm not nearly what I was- but my hands work very badly. the spinal damage reduced both sensory input and motor control in all 4 limbs. very frustrating at times.
I'm really glad requip knocked down most of the muscle twitches. clonus is a bane to good photos.
here's that post level on my old Quick-Set 6000.
Gary found out the bullseye level on his tripod was bent, and that's a lot cheaper than a new tripod. he's probably going to try and get a bullseye version.
not so much thinking outside the box as having a lot of overlapping boxes to shuffle through.
Thanks. interesting site.
that reminds me- I did get that $6 tripod ordered, will let you know when it gets here. But it is like most other under-300 tripods- the bubbles are up on top.
silly if you ask me.
they make inexpensive hot-shoe levels to check the camera- but if the column isn't vertical, what good is that?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Considering what you have going on (or not going on, if you prefer), you do very well. I found this little chrome plated level in my uncles stuff the other day. Is that a bullseye level? If so, how would you mount it to a tripod?

I am getting tired of my closeups being guessed so quickly. So maybe this one will stump you for awhile. I can only hope! Here's MD #49.Posted 16 years ago # -
My intestine as seen by a camera during an upper G.I..
Posted 16 years ago # -
Is it some kind of fabric?
Posted 16 years ago # -
CP, not from your G.I. and not fabric.
Posted 16 years ago # -
That one is a puzzler, indeed.
as for the level- yes, that's a bullseye, and for mounting, a piece of 90° rigid aluminum angle with the level on top and a vertical groove on the upright side should mount it to the column pretty easy with a hose clamp or rubber band. like a little bitty shelf.
In my opinion.
for me a vertical groove (or adding 2 bars with a gap between) would be simple, but gary didn't think he could do it. he's 90+ years old, I ain't gonna argue.
But since harbor freight is right around the corner from my doctor's office it made cheap and clunky faster and easier, so....
take a look at http://www.europanoramas.eu/technical.htm for an interesting idea. the laser level kits are 35-45 bucks these days, but can still be used as levels, too. And the lasers are better.

that another bug?
Posted 16 years ago # -
That's a neat setup. I may even give that a go. Never did install my Canon software. I'll have to get the CD out and find PhotStitch.
