Since GGAOTD launches their site after activation of a new program, my system crashes each time. Today - after the pirate game - it was very bothersome. A complete crash, Firefox had lost all bookmarks, the new "USB safely Remove" was gone, explorer settings too, restore not possible, "MyUninstaller" had to build a new list of installed programs, uninstall-list of Ccleaner wasn't complete, everything is slo-o-o-w, external drive was gone, firewall settings were changed - I really do hope, that no other surprises are awaiting me. (after all I have learned to restore the bookmarks).
I have to launch Firefox before installing a game and may not start the game before the site is up. It seems to be only the games-site, perhaps a graphics issue.

Crash After Activating?

I admit that's bad. If it was easier (there are utilities that might help) I'd suggest adding game.giveawayoftheday.com to your hosts file when activating a game to stop the launch.
now, what was the name of that hosts-swapper program? gotta look.
and it's launched the last 8 months for me. and that addthis.com could easily be added to the hosts file to stop it.
I use noscript so googlesyndication, google-analytics and addthis.com are always blocked.

Thanx goodgotd, have googled "host files" and now I have enough to read for some hours.

Gray, I didn't wade in on this yesterday because your problem seemed related to Firefox, and I don't "do" Firefox much. BTW- I know I owe you a novella... working on it.
Regularly updating the HOSTS file makes for a lot easier surfing and keeps some obnoxious stuff off your 'puter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file
I'm sure everyone has their fav hosts management prog. Mine is a freeware/donate appl called HostsMan -

Hi, Rune, thank you for the links !
I am looking forward...Posted 16 years ago # -
yeah, hostman's a good one, but the one I was thinking of is an orphan called 'Anti-Ad Hosts' that I'll probably have to post someplace- the authors are long gone (2003) and I had a fine time finding it via archive.org.
http://img150.imageshack.us/my.php?image=aahtg7.jpg
makes a hosts-on/hosts-off shift super simple.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Well, like I said, everyone has a fav. Not sure how much simpler it can be (MAN IN THE TRAY Mango ALERT!!!)...
Put Hostsman in Startup and the tray
Click to Open, Click ENABLE or DISABLE.
Hostman is actively supported by several malware/adware collectors:
MVPS Hosts, hpHosts, Mike's and Pete Lowe's.
Choose Update to do a simple merge of all the collections (or you can overwrite); even automatically remove duplicates.
You can also add your own finds, or edit/exclude any sites added during an update.Count is now 70,265 domains blocked.

Oooh boy(s), so long I understood what I've read, this is similar to the adblocker ABP in Firefox ???
Shall I put the GGOTD site in that host file?
Is that the way to stop the site launching after activation ?
You think another little box-man will fit in my gallery ?
Puuuh, think I'll take a long hot shower, perhaps my head becomes a little more clear.
grayloxPosted 16 years ago # -
Gray, I just offered the hosts appl I use for WinXP/IE7. If you put GGOTD's domain in any appl that blocks access or dumps web beacons into limbo, it may prevent you from completing GAOTD's contorted registration procedure.
Since it sounds as if you are encountering some sort of serious conflict related to pop-ups and redirects (the final step of registering triggers the GAOTD tout screen urging you to tell your friends), I doubt if adding a hosts manager is the solution.
Have you gone to the Firefox forums and posted the "error report of Fifo" excerpts you posted above? That's where you're most likely to obtain a viable solution/workaround. A quick google of |adblock ABP firefox| turned up some interesting hits -

Rune, thank you for your help! Now after my hot shower the gray matter is a bit more active.
Yes I know the discussions about ABP and came to pages, which "warned" me or something like that. But I don't think, that's the problem in this particular case.
The GGAOTD site causes no problems otherwise; it's only in that moment when it launches at the same time as the game. This error report seems to make sense:
Windows error report : (in my own words)
"This problem is caused by : ATI Graphics Driver"...
"ATI Technologies has no troubleshooting at this time"
The games mostly launch in full window mode and/or change the display settings and when the site launches in this moment the system gets mad.
The GGAOTD site with it's black background is (in my dummy-words) more complex, than the "normal" GAOTD site. The only solution at this point, seems to be, that I have to remember, not to start the game immediately after installation and activation.
Mozilla got the error-report, but I didn't start a threat in the forums, I first tried to find something related there.
Now to the Host files.
As I have learned by now, the ABP has the same functions, but the Host files are not banned by the spammers yet; perhaps I should change ?Posted 16 years ago # -
If you haven't already, try upgrading your ATI driver file. Always check your PC vendor's site first (e.g., DELL provides an on-line service that compares a PC they built to its vendors and literally spoonfeeds the list of up-to-date drivers... although it does make mistakes). If you can't get the driver from your PC vendor, try - http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
(you need to get the exact make/model card to do this correctly)The Game of the Day site isn't any more complex (the black background is about as basic a coding step there is). Scratch that... looks like the programmer wasn't happy with just a background color hex code, he's using something else. The background is a bi-tone dark blue hue on my monitor, but his source code translates to a grey and black in Photoshop. This is over my head. Maybe the mistress of paints will chime in and splain why the views are so different. I rarely experience that.
Again, since this is happening when you've enable (check box) the launch of the prog to occur at the same Game of the Day is launching a browser page, that's a great clue as to where the conflict be. The workaround may end up being what you're doing. Not launching the program until AFTER the Game window launches.
I don't believe it wouldn't hurt to disable ABP and enable HOSTSMAN. You can always reverse that process.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Rune, I'll give your HOSTSMAN a try. ATI has no solution at this time.
BTW, that crash also deleted my wallpaper, a delicious pizza :)) - but I have a backup...Posted 16 years ago # -
If you're referring to that error message you got originally saying "ATI has no troubleshooting solution", that's NOT the same thing as a message I wish more vendors offered - "Gee, you have a driver file that's X months behind the times. Boy, did we discover and fix a bunch of odd little boo boos and glitches since that file was written! Download and install the replacement! It's free."
Vendors are always updating old drivers, but most people don't bother getting them unless and until they have a problem. So, it's smart to periodically check with the manufacturers of ALL your peripherals (modem, graphics, sound, even PC) and install the most up-to-date driver files for each. Don't just download the newest file, though. You must make sure it's specifically meant for YOUR model. At some point, your card or PC becomes obsolete but they're still pumping out drivers for other models.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Oh-oh! I must confess, I did not update the drivers for some time, the last time I did it, it ended in a disaster. Therefore I am hesitating or chicken-hearted, chicken-livered, cowardly - no, no : lily-livered that sounds more poetical.
You know, never change a winning team! The system runs quite well, so long I remember it's tender spots - wait it's only one spot. So let's hope, it will last.
When this computer crashes seriously, I have a long time problem. A dsl-cable without a puter is not very funny.Posted 16 years ago # -
not funny at all. and it sounds like it's damaging the 'documents and settings' folders. That can get *real* bad.
ought to back that up, bookmarks, desktop, much more in there.
I'll have to do some testing, see if ggaotd uses the same authentication server as gaotd.
too bad you cant stop the game running right away.

3 quick tips.
1. Agree 100% on HostsMan - simple concept, very effective program.
2. Ad Blocking for everything = http://discount.admuncher.com (New versions for Vista also - If I lost it, the one program I would miss the most. ever. Trial. You'll like).
3. Firefox bookmarks = http://foxmarks.com (Seamless and Automatic backup and restore).

Oh, I see, it's really only me, but I'm not allone :-))
Thank you, BuBBy, Rune and goodgodt for your tips, links and assistance for my own thinking. Will download and install.
BuBBy how did you know, that I'm collecting black 'n white cows ?
grayloxPosted 16 years ago # -
Hi Babbbs :-)
I use Foxmarks too, it's a very nice service, and in a pickle I can access my BM from any PC.
BUT, I don't really use it as a backup per se. Twice the server lost all my BM, last time was this morning. That's really why I use them, more as an easy access from everywhere kind of thing.
I always copy (export) BM to my USB, sometimes daily and at least once a week to an external (you know... just in case...). I just can't imagine what I would do if I lost them...
And I always copy the entire profile to an external every time I change/add something.
I just wrote a tutorial to myself on how to have several different *Fifo* profiles on the SAME PC. It's very useful (and fun too). If ur interested, tell me.Thank u MrB & RM for ALL the great info above. I've been following and taking notes!!
As usual, learned a lot!Posted 16 years ago # -
Thanks Manu, it would be nice to see how you do things,
your TUT is welcome like you are ;)Posted 16 years ago # -
Graylox, coincidentally, I just happen to have a really tasty looking homemade pizza picture that could be transformed into grease-free, non-caloric wallpaper. Too bad the real thing can't be grease-free and non-caloric!
Posted 16 years ago # -
If you are wanting to backup all your Firefox stuff - I choose to use FEBE
http://customsoftwareconsult.com/extensions/I've just got it to backup my entire profile & extensions & bookmarks etc to separate RAID-0 Drives at 2am each morning - you can say how many you want to keep (I've got a rolling window of the past 7 backups at all times)
CLEO is also useful to package all of your extensions into a single installable XPI extension that can be added in the case of a rebuild - without needing to hunt all your favorites down again. (I could write up a TUT on my favorite tools, what they do, why I use them - maybe when I get a few hours free)
Posted 16 years ago # -
Hi BuBBy,
Put me on the list of those who would like to consult this TUT. :)
Btw congratulations with your Aimersoft game results!
You must be a man with nerves of steel..
~Robert~Posted 16 years ago # -
Nerves of Steel? Not a chance, I seems to have a little more luck getting started. Mess it up at the beginning and I suppose you could spend hours trying to solve a seemingly impossible layout.
As for the TUT - I'll consider adding it to my GTD list - but it is at least a week or so away. Documenting everything should also let me get a birds eye view of everything I use (almost entirely freeware/open source too). I might also throw in my favorite resource websites - that I regularly visit.
Posted 16 years ago # -
BuBByThanks for the links and yes I really would like to get your TUT.
I had bookmarked FEBE and CLEO for a while and now I did install both.
Rune Just now I really would prefer the not grease-free and very caloric variant. Too bad, that my emailer wont transport such attachments. But thank you anyway.Posted 16 years ago # -
graylox and rune have you considered faxing the pizza?
Posted 16 years ago # -
funkymom are you hoping to get a piece ?
Posted 16 years ago # -
mmmmmmmmmmmm pizza!
Posted 16 years ago # -
Okay, it's enough for both of us, But where is the pizza boy gone ?
Posted 16 years ago # -
hopefully he's making it from scratch.
