Kiril, your city looks beautiful. It must be wonderful to have the seaside so close. I live in a township outside a small city in the lower peninsula (LP) of Michigan. If you're a Michigander it's always easy to show people where you live because the LP is shaped like a mitten. All you have to do is point to the corresponding location on your hand. I live near where the thumb and index finger join (lol) about halfway between Saginaw and Flint. Michigan boasts a large fresh water supply due to our five great lakes.

There is a suspension bridge(about 5 miles long)called the Mackinac Bridge which connects the two peninsulas. The Mackinaw Island area is a very popular tourist spot in the summer. There are catamarans that depart from large docks at both cities on either end of the bridge carrying passengers to and from the island. Residents of the upper peninsula (UP)call us folks that live downstate trolls because we are 'under the bridge'.

Every year on Labor Day, the first Monday in September, pedestrians are allowed to walk the bridge from one peninsula to another. This is the only time this is allowed. I have walked it several times and it is a very awesome thing to do. Last year it was windier than usual up there and I felt a little tipsy at times due to the sway of the bridge. Walking starts early in the morning but I usually wait 2 or 3 hours after the start because the number of people walking is very great. I don't mind a good crowd but I'd rather enjoy the view while walking and not have to worry about being trampled in the process. One side is closed to vehicular traffic during the walk.

On the western side of the state near Traverse City along the Lake Michigan shoreline are great sand dunes. Michigan has several dunes in the UP and the LP but these are the largest and most well known. They go for miles and are very steep in some areas. Like all the dunes, they are a popular climbing destination and some places are nearly too steep to climb unless you are ready for a 4 to 6 hour climb. I was there with a friend last October on my birthday and the view from atop is breathtaking especially with the colors of autumn all around.

There are many wonderful places to see in Michigan and the UP has many waterfalls as well as the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore which travels 42 miles along the shore of Lake Superior. I have done an 8 mile hike in to the forest just to see waterfalls that you wouldn't otherwise be able to see. Yes, I do like to walk and hike, especially when I go camping. Maybe it's that goddess thing in me, I like to hunt beautiful places and take in all that my eyes can see. I have some personal photos of these and other places but don't think they can be posted here. I started a web page once when I was learning html a few years ago but never kept it up.
I stumbled upon this website about a month ago while searching for something else and created a user name for the forums just a couple weeks ago when i had a question about one of the daily offerings. I appreciate that you took the time to post to me here. Surprising what a little compliment started.

Hello Diana!
My best regards to all of you, folks in the Lower Peninsula!
Hey Giants in the Upper Peninsula, don’t desturb your small brothers and sisters under the bridge and take care about them! And say them:”Good morning”. OK!?
Diana, I’m shocked. How and where did you find these Bulgarian phrases? It’s not easy at all. May be you have any Bulgarian friends there? Thank you very much, it was very kind of you! Unbelievable… a Michigan lady to speak Bulgarian. :)
See what I did find about your motherland: http://www.city-data.com/album/album-Flint-Michigan.html and also: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/saginaw/?page=5 . Apropo, getting in mind the dimensions of the USA, you can calmly say that you live near Detroi or even in one of the remote eco-districts of New York. I am greatly impressed by the cleanness of the nature there. Alas, we have some problems with this issue here in Bulgaria.
This time I would like to call your attention to 2 of my favourite songs about my native sea:
1.”Bourgas evenings”- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lir7eSD-Pus ;
2.”The boy who speaks with sea”- http://www.vbox7.com/play:8a48aa1e .
I’ll be glad if you like them. I like to walk on the beach for hours and listen these songs. They belong to so called “Bulgarian estrada”.
BTW, it’s -10C in Flint now, light snow. Don’t forget to put mittens and shawl if you go outdoor. And keep away Giants from the Upper Peninsula. If something, call police.
Kiril
Good Morning Kiril,
I do not have any Bulgarian friends that I know of outside of communicating with you. I guess you could say that I am good at figuring things out and doing my research. I enjoy learning about different places, culture, geography, etc. and enjoy getting to know more about you and your country there in the Balkan Peninsula. See, you and I are not much different in so much as we both live on a piece of land surrounded by water. Aside from a couple years French from high school and a semester of Spanish in college, I’m afraid that’s where my language skills end. If I were to be in your country, I would surely have to have my nose in a translation book. The only Bulgarian I can speak is Kiril (Kupun).
Every major city has its ghetto but don’t judge my town by Flint or Saginaw. There are no ghettos here. I live about 80 miles north of Detroit. The association to Flint is not a good one lately as the economy here is not good. There are a lot of manufacturing plants scattered about the LP. The ‘big 3’, GM, Ford and Chrysler all do business in this state and, when they lose revenue, layoffs and plant closings ensue. Detroit is known as the Motor City and Flint is known as the Vehicle City. Saginaw, eh, well they have the bay area. There is a cultural area downtown Flint though but architecture is old.
Shorelines of Michigan are for the most part well maintained and we have a large tourism industry here. Aside from the snowmobilers in the wintertime, I would say that especially in the summer months, there are probably more tourists in the UP than there are residents. It is known here as God’s country. There are DNR (Department of Natural Resources) agents who make sure that campgrounds and national forests (of which there are several in Michigan) adhere to strict policies. Michigan has the largest state park and state forest system of any state. I have never seen a littered beach here and people have a general respect for the resources that have been given us. Next to the ocean states of California and Florida, Michigan has the largest population of registered boats. Michigan is the ‘water wonderland’. You can do a search in Wiki to find out more and I have several topics and web pages to share with you over the coming days.
I don’t know how much you know about the U.S. but I think it is the general assumption of people here that much of the world is familiar with our culture so we would expect that you knew more about us than we know about you. Is that a fair assumption? I am going to tell you things assuming that you do not already know but if you already have knowledge of the things I share with you, please let me know. I enjoy conversing with you and the things that you have told me about.
I enjoyed the music video links you sent me even though I didn’t understand a single word. :) I will use my software from GOTD to extract the audio and add to my personal music collection. As you may imagine, we have shipping industry on the great lakes and thinking of something I could send back to you I am going to tell you briefly about a well-known shipwreck 15 miles off Whitefish Point (lighthouse). It is a legendary tragedy and the memory of this terrible event continues to be a topic of discussion especially in the UP. I always get teary-eyed listening to this song. By the way Lake Superior is the largest of the five great lakes of North America. It is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and is the world's third largest freshwater lake by volume. According to Wiki, it is twice the size of The Netherlands. In the Ojibwe (Chippewa Indians) language, the lake is called Gichigami, meaning "big water". It is also known as "Gitche Gumee". The lake was named le lac supérieur, or "Upper Lake," in the seventeenth century by French explorers because it was located above Lake Huron.

The flowers you sent still look as fresh as they day you gave them to me. ;) We are expecting a lunar eclipse this evening; will you see it also? I see you have been having much better weather there than here in this frozen place. Brrr…
Diana
PS -these posts are getting longer each time; perhaps I am being too verbose?
Good evening Diana,
Introduction
One night a long long time ago in the years when I was a student of sociology, a Voice clearly and definitely said to me in my dream:
-Diana!
Narration
My impressions about you
First of all, I must confess that you are 5 times at least more intelligent than I am. Alas, it happens sometimes, nothing to do. And you are very brave woman. BTW, I always have had thinking about American and English women as about very courageous women. Obviously, you are a 1st class person. I think you have a talent to write- there are too many associations in your texts. I like verbose (talkative) people. Bad thing my English is not fluent… or may be it is a good thing :)
The problem with my English
I studied in a Russian language school. Such was the epoch and Russian language was in a mode. Not so bad time, btw. You people of west world know only about the sting of the socialism but you have to know also that there were many many good things in our previous society:
1.Absolutely free education (I for example studied in 3 universities- Veliko Tirnovo University, Moscow State University and Sofia University, and the Republic of Bulgaria has paying for this);
-the education was obligatory for everybody from 7th year up to 15th year (or from 1st up to 8th class)
-the education was on a very high level
2.Absolutely free protection of health including dentist's services;
3.We were not rich but there were not hungry people like now;
4.There were not homeless people under the bridge like now;
5.We had many interesting forms of communications- school and student working brigades, any meetings and other initiatives. It was normally for us to pay a regular visit to our friends at their homes. It's almost impossible now.
6.It was safety to walk on the streets and in the parks at night. Even for children.
Of course, there were many pieces of stupidity too. But Bulgaria was like an oasis within the socialist block. We freely listened your music, saw your films, etc. Generally, it was not a “dark epoch” for Bulgaria. It couldn't be said about Rumania and the Republics of Soviet Union.
About my family
My father was a boundary officer, he was a colonel. Honest up to naivety communist. He is steel alive and continues to believe in socialist party.
My mother is a teacher of history in a school.
My brother is an investigator in Ministry of Justice. He was a jurisconsult of one of the Bulgarian battalions in Iraq 3 years ago. There are more arms in his had than brain. I don’t like him. We are very different persons.
Wow, it’s time to stop my letter. But not yet. Not before I present to you one interesting Bulgarian folklore song- Izlel e Delyo haydutin. It is impossible to be translated into English. What is interesting in this song? This song flys with spaceship Voyager in this moment. Really! This song was chosen by NASA to present the abilities of HUMAN VOICE in the space- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ipb_xzcCs6I .
I’m terribly sorry about the crew of EDMOND FITZGERALD. Nice music on a sad story. In December last year a Bulgarian (Bourgas) ship shipwrecked near Kerch, Ukraine. A single sailor was saved.
“I don't know how much you know about the U.S. but I think it is the general assumption of people here that much of the world is familiar with our culture so we would expect that you knew more about us than we know about you.”
True, we know even about Yankee Doodle. :)
“We are expecting a lunar eclipse this evening; will you see it also?”
OK, I will count stars this night especially for you!
