   After years for honorable services, I am retiring my current computer. My new computer is currently traveling across country to join me. Now the question..... How in heck do I get all of my programs and data off my old computer on to my new computer. I read that Acronis True Image can accomplish this feat with the least pain. I bought it but after installing it, it appears that I can image my hard drive to my external dive but I don't see that I have the ability to move not only data but my programs on to my new computer.

   Any help would be appreciate not only by me but by my family. They are currently packing to go to a motel for the week if I am forced to install each program individually. That is after hours of hunting up all the original CDs, missing registration number and etc.

   Please help my family ........

   Hello thefbi,
   I can not be sure if this guide from Microsoft TechNet will work for you with all the software you want to transfer, if you are upgrading to a Vista OS, since Vista is very picky on what it will run. The guide is based on the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, and can be found here:

   Another article worth reading if you are moving from Windows XP SP2 to Vista and can find the proper cable(to make life simple) can be found here:

   There is third party software available to help with the task of moving files to a new computer, but since I have not used such software I can not recommend what the best program would be. I am sure others on this forum if asked, could help out there.

   I did post yesterday, however forgot to press 'send post', so I will put what I think is a good way and free.

   Hit start > programms > accessories > system tools > file and transfer settings wizard.

   Once open press next, select old computer to save files for transfer, then follows prompts.

   Just select new computer when you want to transfer back files to new hd.

   Thanks Lee... after reading your advise, I googled this process and found that Microsoft had a beta program to make this even easier. Posting here in case anyone else could you the information.
