As per requests from funkymom and Whiterabbit I have started a new thread on using your PC/Mac to find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease, Cancer, Huntington's Disease, Osteogenesis, Imperfecta, and Parkinson's Disease.
I am sure some of you have heard of the idea of sharing your PC's bandwidth for science/medical research or projects when you aren't using it. I found a site that is doing medical research for Alzheimer's Disease, Cancer, Huntington's Disease, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Parkinson's Disease, Ribosome & antibiotics. I have been doing it almost 2 years. When I started I was running Win98 on a Pent2 and it didn't slow me down. Now I have a Pent 4 with WinXP SP2 even with a game running, I find I am interrupted more by email or auto updates than my folding program. So I keep it on ALL the time. I have it running on 2 machines and the Rosetta program running on my slower PC.
Since October 1, 2000, over 1,000,000 CPUs throughout the world have participated in Folding@ Home. Each additional CPU gives them an added boost in performance, allowing them to tackle more difficult problems or solve existing research faster or more accurately. It is thro Stanford University in California. They have a Help section but I have found this site to be more helpful http://www.dslreports.com/faq/thfaq It's quite an intense FAQ. And the FAQ tends to be more helpful and they have some great ppl who ACTUALLY answer your questions on the forum. I am a Premium member but you can join for FREE and get help. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/2903 Here is info on Team Helix http://www.bbrteamhelix.net/ and http://www.dslreports.com/forum/helix There are links all over the place with info.

I have found it to be more helpful and not as boring to be on the forum than being on the Stanford site plus you can find other sites to hang out in to get info about your PC or Cable or dsl connections. Here is some info on Broadband Reports http://www.dslreports.com/about , how to use it http://www.dslreports.com/faq/site and They have Graphics, Video, Games http://www.dslreports.com/forums/17 , Health, Politics, Sports, Software, Security, Security Cleanup(I had to use it once cause of the hubby), Home repair and even a Ham Radio Forum http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all Just peruse the list. They even have a UK Chat; though, I have never been there. And NO I don' hang out on the Canadian Site and that is all I will say about that. But I have been on this forum since March of 2006 and have made many friends. ALL the forums are moderated. The best part is.. They have IM's and you can set up "Buddy Lists". You can upload screen shots, pics and video.
What you do is download their program, set it up and your PC does the work. Here is a site with what they have done so far http://folding.stanford.edu/papers.html and here is a link to their home page http://folding.stanford.edu/ and more info http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/ . They have translations for the Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Here is Stanford's Help Center http://folding.stanford.edu/mail.html
My grandparents all died of either heart attacks or cancer and now my mother has bone cancer and Alzheimer's so my "folding" makes me feel like I am contributing to help find a cure for the future. I am also a big fan of Kate Mulgrew and her mother recently died of Alzheimer's and she is quite active in the Alzheimer's community. http://www.totallykate.com/charity.html So this is my "little" way of helping since I have limited funds etc. And it makes me feel good and I wanted to share this with all of you. You can ask questions on the forums(My nick is delenn13). Or you can check out all the links I have given you and read and lurk etc until you feel comfortable enough to do it. Or you can ask questions here.
I don't want to steal people from here. We have a great little team here. But BBR is my home(We are Team Helix #4.) and will be always. We have laughed, cried and supported each other like a family. And I would like to introduce you to my family. :)
