Hi to all the fun-loving gamers on GAOTD. Since finding GGAOTD a year ago, I've had lots of fun and spent hours with my favorite game giveaways, Treasures of Montezuma, Brickshooter Egypt, and Mahjongg Artifacts. I spend a lot of hours on the keyboard and type well but somehow I can't seem to master maneuvers on arrow or ASWD-key controlled games. Does anyone have any suggestions for improving my eye-finger coordination? Finger calesthenics or some pinkie-led motivational speeches? Or should I chuck that idea and get a joystick or game controller? I've looked at so many joystick-game pad-macro functional game accessories at Newegg that my head is spinning! I can't see myself installing a steering wheel & foot pedal unit, unless I could do some web surfing or word processing work with them also..turn right=page down, brake pedal=new paragraph! (At least that makes work sound fun). But I could save some cans and get a nice little game accessory that'd keep me from turning away from those arrow/AWSD games. You all had to have gone through this phase on your way to gaming nirvana, so what are your suggestions? I'd like to be able to play the many games I've loaded but left after seeing their controls. Thanks!
Looking for suggestions for Joystick or Game Pad or ??

Well, in my experience the best way to improve response time (and typing speed) is just to do it over and over and over again...
but if you're looking for a joystick for general purposes, Logitech is a good brand. Reliable name, never had a compatibility problem with them, et cetera.

i, too, have issues with arrow/awsd games. so i usually don't download them. i'm a mouse girl....squeak squeak!
that said, if i see any cheap suggestions i might pick up a joystick or gamepad (which i know nothing about).
how does a gamepad work?

Not directly related to the question at hand, but if you have a gamepad, and they are relatively inexpensive, there is a free program called xpadder which I recently discovered. It allows you to use the gamepad in place of a mouse, arrow keys, wasd, or any other keymappings on the computer. It also allows you to customize different profiles, and the buttons can be for whatever you want as well, plus it works with EVERY brand/model of gamepad. It is really cool and useful, because even on games that don't support gamepad controls, you can use the gamepad, as it would then be emulating the mouse or keyboard. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.xpadder.com/download.html
Just click on the green arrow pointing down. Thanks, Mapsking

gamepads are really cheap, mine was € 4.95, I think that kind is good enough for a occasional gamer for those simple (??)* games like todays giveaway.
That xpadder tool is in my opinion not very intuitive. Maybe I gave up to early. Will try it again, when not so tired like today.
* I never reached the goal, but I plowed the park very efficient.

Hello,
For mouse compatible and most 4 button games, my suggestion for ease of use would be a "gaming mouse", they come with at least 2 extra buttons, and all 4 buttons can be configured for different applications with the software that comes with the mouse, the gaming mouse also has a button to change up to 4 different settings for the DPL speed (how fast the mouse reacts), handy for a more precise mouse movement speed between difference applications, a good example for using a slower speed would be a drawing program, or a photo editing program where precise pointer control is needed. One profile that I use a lot is the 2 extra buttons are set to go forward and back in Web pages and Windows on the desktop.
I use a RetailPlus+ "MultiDPI Optical Mouse", available from Walmart for around $25.00, the more higher end mice from Logitech, Saitek, or Microsoft are between $40.00 and $100.00, give or take, depending on some extra features or if if they are wireless or not.
If you need the extra buttons or like a game pad better, the one from Microsoft is comfortable to hold and the button placement is quite good. I would stay away from the ones with the rumble pack, I find the vibration is quite distracting and they feel heavier.
Joysticks, like Logiteck's "WingMan" Attack 3, are good for flight simulator type games, but I find they are way to cumbersome to use all the time. The "WingMan" I own mostly sits and collects dust.
Now that I have used a gaming mouse, I would find it hard to go back to a regular mouse, not just for using it with games, but for everyday computing. I would most certainly buy another one when the one I have stops working.
Have a Great Day,
