When was that game given away, WR? I can't recall it being recently.
Posted 10 years ago # -
It was just given away this past weekend (Nov 9). It is available from Gametop and MyPlayCity if you missed it.

I was playing this game and going fine till stage no 5 when it got stuck and wouldn't go when I pressed continue, it seems to have paused though I couldn't find any button to restart, I can still do "free play" but not get the game to continue

saw your post about the game being available from Gametop so downloaded it and it opens at exactly the same place where I am stuck?!

It's at the same point because it's using the same profile area. To avoid losing your point, try creating a new profile and start again and see if it sticks again. Or, even better, -- contact the developer.

many thanks Dragonlair, that seems to have solved the problem

I am confused Dragonlair, isn't that "against GGOTD/GOTD rules" (you know, no tech support)
not that I ever hesitated to TRY to get support when needed and I must say that there are enough GOTD developers that have no problem giving support, I just thought it an odd comment on the GOTD forums ;)
yeah, haven't slept all night yet (it's 9:15 am here) so I can get a bit... smartassy right now :P

It's not against "no tech support" if you get the SAME game elsewhere and have the same problem.

Played Mahjong Secrets since I installed - today it would not work - seemed froze at a point - tried to reinstall - now it is gone- I liked this game - how can I get it back? Can't find it in my downloads folder!!!

If you installed it from GOTD, you cannot do it again that way as it was a one-day deal. However, you can install it from MyPlayCity or GameTop.
MyPlayCity gives you no choice of where to install but does not open the browser at this time. They'll probably change that. They install to Program Files (with "(x86)" if you are 64 bit). They also only download a stub at the start and they've changed where they put the full install and I can't find it!
GameTop sometimes opens the browser and sometimes does not. However, you have full control over where it is installed and you can save the downloaded file for re-install later, if needed.

MPC currently downloads the full installers to the temp folder, then deletes it when the installer is finished. It would be easy enough to copy it to another folder if the installer would pause at some point after the download waiting for input, but it is unfortunately completely automatic from when you agree to the terms (before the download). It can be copied if you are fast (you have to wait for the download to reach 100% first though), but for anything smaller than about 30MB, and especially smaller than 10MB, it becomes difficult or impossible to copy it before the installer deletes it. One trick is to start the installer, at which time an empty installation folder is created in temp (note: the temp folder on the admin account if installed from a limited/standard account). But before agreeing, change the permissions on the folder so "delete" and "delete subfolders and files" is denied to the account installing the game (the admin account in my case). That way the setup_full file will remain after the installer finishes.

QunMang,
I just tried to install the latest release by MPC. I had a separate Windows Explorer open to <admin user>\AppData\Local\Temp all during the download/install of the game and NO new file appeared in that folder. I tried it twice! Still no luck.
They're putting it somewhere but I can't find it. I had just found where they hid it in the temp folder before their latest change.
The Plusses of the latest change is there is no opening of the browser at the end of the game that I can determine and there is less garbage created that needs to be cleaned up after an install.

No new folder either? I just downloaded a recent game, The Gift, and ran the install stub. A folder promptly appeared in the admin user temp folder called thegift_setup_files. It is currently empty, but once I click next to accept the agreement, the full setup file will be downloaded to that folder.
Just to be clear the folder is as you mention:
C:\Users\QunMang\AppData\Local\Temp (*)*No, my admin account is not named QunMang, but in this example QunMang has admin privileges and I actually run as a standard user which for this example we will call QunMang Limited.

That time I did see the folder and was able to trap the file. The difference between this and what they used to do is they now clean up after themselves - even before you "finish".

Although it does say no support, some developers will still help. I've contacted developers who have given away software, both applications and games, due to some issue and have not only received help, in some cases they have given me registration keys and download links that have given me the latest version of their software, which I've been able to install at any time as well as reinstall.
Alawar have been particularly good to me over the years, for example I used to post feedback about most games I purchased from them (just look back through the comments of many games that are 5 or more years old) and you'll probably find my comments. I used to provide fairly long comments with feedback about the game and possible enhancements. Following my purchase of Magic Ball 3 and subsequent feedback, they sent me a large package (after requesting my address) that contained a calendar, Magic Ball 3 mug, wall clock and a courier bag. Later they invited me to their beta testing progam, where we were given a copy of each game we tested (they no longer do this, but do give something like 33% off games you test). I stopped buying games from them for a while and received an email asking if things were okay. The only problem I had was that money had become tight as I'd spent virtually all of my savings post accient (I've not been able to work since he accident 9 yeas ago). They gave me several games for free and gave me a permanent voucher that gives me 50% off all Alawar games. I've have similar experiences with other developers where I was offered free games (usually after beta testing or providing extensive feedback).
Not all developers will help, but it's always worth asking.
