Lee, that rang a bell... it used to occur with older Win versions.

Maybe this will help:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Windows-Update-Fix-for-Win9x-ME.shtml
Note, I wouldn't download THAT fix, but it might point you in the right direction on the always confusing Microsoft Knowledgebase maze.

By any chance did today's update download from Microsoft force you to totally SHUT DOWN your system (rather than just a soft reboot)? My PC was forced to shut down and that's never happened that way before. Now I'm trying to check updates history, and the first of 3 updates they tried to send me today has failed to install 3 times. "Update for Windows XP (KB934238)" Not a good omen. Gates has really created a monster. I love this site - http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp
Well thanks for the response.
I think I can trace the problem back yesterday.
I kept getting an update (via automatic updates).
It tried to install but failed. 9 or 10 times infact.
So I downloaded the file myself from windows update catalog.
It failed also.
The update was for Windows Live Photo Gallery.
So I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it and the update installed fine.
I then recall a browser window opening and being asked to install a quicktime plugin.
Thats what I think is the problem, the actual plugin tells M$ updates I am a Mac user, when I am not.
Anyway, I restored an image before this problem and fingers crossed should be o.k.
-- Just tried and windows update now believes i am a windows user, thats because I didn't install the plugin.
Lee, glad you've resolved your prob.
I still have nagging concerns about the effects of their last few updates. Take the transient incident that occurred yesterday while attempting to log onto one of my brokerage accounts. It was the only browser window open, and when the page loaded, the little popup alert bar at the top of the window said the site wanted to download and install an ActiveX file for DivX. Now DivX is a movie-related appl, and I knew of no reason why the brokerage would be playing movies. Something didn't compute, so I called the brokerage and when their tech dept claimed it wasn't THEIR file, I had them freeze my account temporarily. Ran all the scans at my disposal, incl. anti-rootkits. Nothing. Clean. So, I've changed my password and am keeping fingers crossed some variant of a keylogger isn't sitting here scooping up info.
Also dealing with a quirky nuisance. Half the time I try to launch any shortcut to any website, I'm now getting an error message saying there's no internet connection... when there IS. Googling shows that others are getting this message, too, but as yet, good solutions aren't forthcoming.
wow, now that's a cool problem. Looking in from outside.
hello, everyone...
similiar prob here...
fully updated pc, xpsp2 mce...and the update notice appears in my tray on tuesday ( i have updates set to notify, but not install---too many huge Linux distro downloads stopped by auto-update & reboot at 3 a.m. )...
said i needed KB936181 ( security update for MS XML services, released way back in august '07 ), root certificates update, & KB946609 ( MS Silverlight, no idea when or if i ever updated that---but if it was available before, it must've been installed already )...
so...KB936181 installed six times!...whee!...install...wait...and...the tray notice pops up again...
after searching the MS help & seeing many causes & solutions & even trying a couple...i went a little nuts...
set system restore point...used the Control Panel Add Or Remove Programs...removed beloved KB936181...ran "Ccleaner", including the registry entries ( backed those up first )...rebooted..."Ccleaner" again...ran MS update again...and...yesss!...installed & stayed, hopefully...
several reboots later, still ok...
but...
now when i use IE, MS site asks me if i want to enable "Silverlight" to enhance my browsing experience...
maybe i'll enhance my experience at a later date...
Violet, thanks for posting your workaround. Not happy to hear it, though, as resetting restore points means losing/reinstalling applications. (except, of course, GAOTD's) Hope my PC doesn't catch the big "Mac" disease.
FWIW, MSFT's been trying to cram Silverlight down my PC's throat for several months. They want to compete with Adobe's Flash & Shockwave, SUNW's Java and Apple's Quiktime - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Silverlight
I'm sick of MSFT and expect this to introduce a whole new raft of security holes and PC crash potential. Haven't accepted their incessant offer to download it yet, but they don't take no thanks for an answer, thus it's the first popup each time I check for updates. grrrr
You can always add it to the ignore list in windows update, so it doesn't ask you to install it.
A bit like windows messenger v4.7.
Yeah, I have put things on that IGNORE before, but then you have the little nagger telling you to take "critical" things off IGNORE, and if you're like me (old and stupid) you forget what you put on IGNORE meaning you have to schlep over and check and.... !&#&%#
I must've missed this one - but with a subject like that but I can't help but comment -
seeing a PC lying back on a psychologists lounge, and the doc says... "soooo, you zhink you are a mac, ya? vell don't vorry, zis iz a very zerious problem, how long haf you been thinking zis vay?"
One question, is your new mac worth more than your old PC was?
You missed the other bit also, 'tell me about your mother'!
Does a PC with a powerful motherboard have an Oedipus complex?
No, it would have an Electra complex. An Oedipus complex is animosity toward the father.
Lockett, a (male) child is dx'd with an Oedipal complex when exhibiting an abnormally intense attraction to his mommy (viewing poppa as serious competition), hence my admittedly lame tie in with motherboards.
Now, if we were talking about a PC that is totally infatuated with Ron Popeil's pocket keyboard vacuum with convenient headlight, you could dx it is as having an Electra-"lux" complex. :-) Hmmm, that joke might be before your time... do they even make Electrolux vacuums these days?
My mother? Let me tell you about my mother...sounds of gunfire....
(From Blade Runner)
Lee, you wrote what was echoing in my head. Too funny guys, fatherboards and complexes:)))
