I had posted before about the question about this software not really being FREE. Now, I uninstalled Notables, first backing registry etc...the program will tell me, when trying to reinstall that the trial is over and cannot install. Even restoring the registy is useless. Now, would someone kindly explain to me how this is not false advertisement? It's only free as long as you don't uninstall it or reinstall your OS?? That is simply not right. At Vnunet, you get what they say, FREE FREE FREE, you get a code sent in the e-mail. What really is the difference between trial and what you get here supposedly free? Reinstalling an OS or uninstalling software for troubleshooting is a normal and every day occurrance in most homes and businesses, every day someone somewhere has to do this. There is no point then, it's not FREE by any means, it's trialware on a new basis. FREE means FREE. This is NOT freeware. Period. I have wasted much time downloading the giveaways it seems. No thanks, keep the give aways, it's false sense of leading people to thinking they get something free.
Ok, this is what I meant...

comicfan2000: Of course this is not freeware. Freeware is free. This is commercial software licensed in a different manner. Sorry you feel that this site has wasted your time - you are certianly entitled to your opinion. This site is not false advertising as the terms and usage is clearly labled. I'm using FULL VERSION software that this site has provided - otherwise I'd have to pay for it or not use it (granted there are many freeware/opensource solutions out there) some of the things offered here are much more unique - Ex. RoboTask. If you back up your computer before a reformat you can definately get everything here to work again - that is if you did so properly (remembering dlls, registry files, and the program files). This is only one method to do things out of several ways.

When you activated Notables on the day of the giveaway, you got a window popup like this:
___________________________________________Install the software and then register it using
registration name
Giveawayoftheday
and registration key
????-????-????-????
___________________________________________If you saved this information you should have no problem whatsoever changing the trial to the full version.

I know what you are saying and I am well aware of backing up but please read right from the main page, as stated:
<<Well, that's a convenient initiative allowing you to get the best commercial software titles - for free. Every day we offer licensed software you'd have to buy otherwise, for free! >>
Perhaps a better term would then be put:
Every day we offer licensed software you'd have to buy otherwise, for free! Or until you need to uninstall it, so you should back up your registry, data, dll's, program files otherwise the programs will no longer be FREE. These programs are only FREE if you don't reinstall\uninstall.
I am not trying to be a stick in the mud here or slam the site but if something is FREE as stated, it doesn't matter how you slice it, it should be FREE without needing to worry about backing up from here to Sunday. I back up regularly but I don't think I should have to for a software that is supposed to be free. Backing up a PC should be done so you don't lose information at a user's time and option not because you downloaded something to keep it active when it's supposed to be free. It is not free then. If it was, I would still have it regardless. I did in fact backup reg files, dlls, etc..but the installer must connect to the internet and it won't even open to restore the files. Now, this suggests I must do a system restore, IF that works, or restore my whole backed up drive for something that was supposedly free. I am sorry and once again I am not taking a dig here and still think it a valuable place here but this is simply wrong. If this "fine line" is the case, then it could be freeware until a pc is rebooted as well, just a step further but do you see my point? It could be called free until a power outage then it's gone. The term FREEWARE means it's free to use and keep as long as you own the software, not until you uninstall it or reformat your pc. JFYI, if backing up does no good, which it didn't in my case since access to the internet and communication with it's server must be done first, and you can't restore the backed up files, how is this free? It's a hidden stipulation is what it seems to me. Unless I missed something in fine print, I have seen nothing to indicate you will lose rights when uninstalled.

Hi Bill,
No registration key, it simply said congratulations, my FREE FULL license is or has been activated. Something on that order. I can't restore it since the setup file needs to go through the reg process over net to re-activate and it won't saying the free giveaway has ended.
Edit: If it would have had a key, 1. it wouldn't matter since to reinstall the above mentioned happens.
2. I always take down keys right away and unfortunately , there wasn't one.
Thanks,

Hi Paul,
There is one. Sometimes it may get hidden if you have too many Windows open at once. It's easy to miss - I've missed it before.
I see your point. Regardless, this IS a marketing initiative (you don't put the bad things in when you market) - and we (the users of this site) are the product which is being sold.

I got the same version as everyone did, and I got a key with Notables. Although this window may have popped up behind other windows and you might have missed it. Email me at my name at aol.com if you have any other questions.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I truly don't want to be the Grinch here and still appreciate this stuff and in any other forum, I probably would have been thrown to the dogs or bombarded with ignorant comments, hats off to all of you. Well, so far i'll chalk it up to bad luck. I had no luck with that game giveaway, nor notables. I will assume I missed the key, hey I know i'm not perfect and far from so it could happen, no doubt. Perhaps I need time to get used to this software or more likely the way it works. So onward, I am not losing anything anyway since I didn't pay for it in the first place.
Thanks,
Paul

The game today is Swap-and-Fall. What kind of trouble did you have there?
Posted 17 years ago # -
I haven't tried it. After my fiasco with the other, didn't figure it would work. Bullet didn't even install and after updating with OpenGl, DirectX, although DX was updated, and a million other things, it wouldn't work. I will try todays game and see what happens.

Ok, downloaded S&F, worked great, installed instantly, np. Good graphics too. However, no key. I went through every ounce of setup and no registration key. Well, at least this one works unlike Bullet Candy.
Paul

S&F only creates a folder with the game after the activation is accepted. No registration keys required. About half of the games here don't.
Bullet Candy works the same way. The only tough part about Bullet Candy is that if OpenGL doesn't work, try the DirectX selection. I only installed it on two of my computers and both won't work under OpenGL, but runs just fine under DirectX.

Yeah, I have Direct X but I never got an option to use either one. From start to go it's like this...
Download the zip file. Unzip using Winzip among others tried, unzip my files, extract\run the setup, activation is fine, no problem. I get one option, to choose where the "Game folder" will be installed, obviously C:, from there it claims intall\setup went fine. I go to my game folder and there sits the white and blue file icon, no .exe label although the zip progs see it as such. It is only labeled Bullet Candy, not BC.exe. If I double click it, a small box flashes for under a second and that's it. I tried unblocking the zip file since I thought it may be blocked by windows so right clicked and did that, still no go. Gave up finally after hours. I never get an option to choose DX or OGL, like I stated, it simply goes right to where I want the folder and that's it, no other options, no questions.

Oh I use WinZip 9.0 SR-1 (newer ones requires a new registration code that I don't have) and I never unzip (extract) any of these Zipped files. I run them straight from WinZip or the built in Windows XP one. I have no idea what happens if I actually extracted them.
Some of these programs have a separate activation file and a setup or sometimes they have both in one. If the former, usually running the activation one first gives you less problems before running the setup one. When they are combined, that is all you need to double click on it within WinZip.

Hi again,
I have Winzip Pro 10, full version. I got it free for helping them beta test it some time ago . Yes, I did choose for Winzip to auto install as well and it didn't work any differently. See, you can unzip a folder but if you don't actually extract the files, which windows will ask you to do, the setups won't work right as they typically depend on the other files in the folder and unless extracted won't find them, usually .dlls. Winzip does this automatically as you stated, but didn't work for me either. If in fact it's registered, I wonder if I download a new setup and see if it runs?

How about using right click and Open With "Compressed (zipped) folders" which is the built in one from Windows? Your WinZip is probably okay, but just use the Windows one and see what happens. You are running Windows XP right?
Posted 17 years ago # -
Yes, i'm running XPpro SP2 full, all updated and not OEM. I tried to right click many times, use the Windows unzip\extract as well and nothing. I just downloaded the TRIAL version of BC but it does the exact same thing.

Here is a screen shot, when I try to run\open the file, the quick vid window pops up very very quickly, "lucky to grabbed screenshot" and then dissappears. Cannot do anything else with it.

Oh! Why is it titled "C:\Games\Bullet_Candy_Demo_Win"? I'm guessing that this game just isn't compatible with your hardware. That happens sometimes :(
Posted 17 years ago # -
It's titled demo because I downloaded the demo version a bit ago, I think I mentioned in the above posts but yeah, I figured if it installed it was the download from yesterday but it's not, it's the demo too. I don't think it's compatable either. Oh well, guess that's just the way it is. Thanks for the help though, much appreciated.

AH,well at least I know what it's SUPPOSE to look like, lol. It is almost certainly a video driver issue then, i'll almost guarantee it. This game is conflicting somehow. I have never had any trouble with games of any kind and have had a lot of them. Well, hopefully other games will work like Swap and fall, that one works fine.
Thanks again,
Paul
