Backup software

Should I replace Insofta's backup-software? GotD mentions improved engine over Insofta. I've gotten used to Insofta and it works fine. Hm.
Edit: they look kind of similar, is it the same vendor and same (but newer/improved) program under a different name? Think I'll download it and try it out.

No, different vendor, but same core engine, DoubleSafety claims that they have 20% better backup performance with the new version of the engine. Check this out:)

It's installed and tried.
Is the layout part of the engine? (I'm guessing no, but...) Because they are very similar layout-wise.

Why don't I get an e-mail from SoubleSafety with a registration code.
The programme tells me it is an evaluation version and that the evaluation period is over in 30 days.
I thought it was free and fully functional ("as is") with no time limitations?
Am I supposed to get a registration code?Posted 17 years ago # -
Erik, launch the activate.exe file to make your copy registered, you do not need any e-mail from them.

Tried to launch the Activation.exe but keep getting told that it failed to connect to the http://www.givawayoftheday.com site.
Just want to know if the site is working before I start looking at my firewall settings please.

Site is working ... Try mirror link if "normal" link continues to fail after a few minutes wait. Servers could be "busy".

ND, just got the information that Insofta's new version also switched to updated engine:))

Have tried both sites and still unable to connect to giveawayoftheday.com web site and unable to find any mention of the site being blocked by firewall.
In the readme file it says to activate before installing yet some on here are saying to activate after install! who is correct.

If you open the "About" window in each application, DoubleSafety says version 3.6.1.83 and Insofta says version 3.6.2.83. Assuming this is the core engine version, then Insofta appears to have the more recent version.

jb,
I first ran activate and closed the window that says activation was successful.
Then I ran setup and, after asking me my preferences on where I wanted it, the program installed itself and a windows popped up that said that the installation was successful and a check box that said, run DoubleSafety now.
I clicked ok, the program started and when I checked the help>about pop up it said that the program was registered to GOTD and that means you have a full version that will not expire.

OK pauloparra,
Eventualy got the program to activate, nothing to do with my firewall or Proxy.
I disconnected my Broadband and re-connected using a dialup account and the program activated stright away.
So what do I have to tell my ISP to change to let me use Broadband inplace of dialup I don't want to be having to do this every time.
Also when the program is registered what happens when I re-install windows XP and have to re-install the backup program? will it still be a full version when I install again??
Regards

It will be demo again if you re-install Windows XP.

tichan,
If that is so what is the point in offering this service if one is unable to use the software again after a windows install.

I merely answered your question regarding will it work.
As for your current question (pasted from GAotD developer's section):

Does anyone know why this software won't let me burn to a disc? The option is greyed out in the wizard. I don't understand why. I have a blank disc in the cd burner.
Posted 17 years ago # -
ehooton: I don't know. Let me install the program and take a look...
EDIT: For me both options are available - Backup to Local/LAN and CD/DVD. No idea why it doesn't show up on yours.

jb,
Obviously you have no problem connecting to the web site using broadband. I don't know what is different about the activation access to the internet from what the browser does, maybe the GOTD team can give you a hint? I know very little about firewalls, proxys, and network stuff.
Has this happened to you before or this is the first time you try to activate a GOTD program?
I use cable broadband and I never had any problems with the activation process. To make matters worse I am running off a wireless router which has its own firewall. On top of that the router connection is encrypted for security.
Sorry I can't be of much help.

What OS are you running ehooton? I don't think you need a driver for the burner if you are running Windows XP or Vista. But everything else I believe you need a driver for the burner.
Posted 17 years ago # -
I'm on Windows XP, sp 2
Posted 17 years ago # -
What model drive are you using? You should check the manufacter's website and update to the latest drivers if available. Sometimes Windows built in drivers are NOT sufficient (though from my experience as a PC tech I haven't come across this much).
Posted 17 years ago # -
I think that is my problem. Thanks. I have a good starting point now. I just used Astra 32 and it says the driver could not be loaded. Thanks!
Posted 17 years ago # -
Your most welcome. Let us know if that indeed was the culprit - and whether or not your software is properly working after this.
Posted 17 years ago # -
That was my problem. It was much more complicated than it should have been too. My driver was corrupt and Windows wouldn't let me update, but with the help of other friendly www users, we have the problem fixed. And YES, the program works just fine now. Thank you!

I am having trouble with the verification process. It says that it cannot open file "E:\backup.zip" The parameter is incorrect. Anybody seen this?
The backup was fine and readable and it tested no problems. I even run isobuster on it and found no problems with the file or the surface of the cd-rw disc.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Hmm. Could you open the backup.zip with a standard ZIP unarchiver? (The original file, the local copy on the harddrive).
Posted 17 years ago # -
Yes, I can open it, unzip the files. Everything works ok.
I am trying a cd writer now. I was using a dvd/cd writer before.Posted 17 years ago # -
EDIT: nevermind.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Thats what I am using
