Taking up things where I left off because of my accident ,I decided to run windows 8.1 in Vmplayer.(using windows 7)
But for some odd reason I can't seem to connect my usb flash drive in this VM.
(Failed to connect because of the drive being in use)
Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this?

There are two ways
a) in the VM click the "Player" drop down menu button, select "Removable Devices", select the USB flash memory device, and then select "Connect (disconnect from host)". The flash memory will then connect to the VM
b) click on the "add remove hardware" icon on your main (host) computer, eject the usb drive, remove the usb drive, click your VM to make it the active machine and then reinsert the usb drive. It will then connect automatically to the VM.You should also setup "shared folders" so your VM can access files on your host machine directly. (Player | Manage | Virtual Machine Settings | Options)
Also #2 - if you haven't already you need to install VMtools.

If you can't get it working it's less hassle than it used to be to open & set up your vhd in V/Box, as long as you use VirtualBox-4.3.12-93733-Win rather than the latest version. You'd likely want to make a copy of the vhd 1st so you could go back to VMWare if you choose, & you'll want to add the extension pack to V/Box for USB 2. You can also use Microsoft's win7 version of Virtual PC -- you only need special versions of win7 to get the XP Mode VM, with the host software being free to all win7 users. Not every version of Windows will work in win7's VPC -- you need remoting -- but its USB handling is pretty good, and you don't have to worry about shared folders or network communications between the VM & host Windows... since it uses the remote stuff Windows Explorer in the VM can see & use every drive, file, & folder on your rig.

Thanks ChrisS and mikiem2.
Updating to the latest version of VMware Player (6.0.3) finally solved the problem.
Thanks for the advice...I will give VirtualBox-4.3.12-93733-Win a try.Posted 10 years ago #
