I don't know what the exact half-way mark is, but I'd definitely agree that after you've unlocked a good number of the power-ups the game becomes much easier.
the blue totem at level 1 removes all steel pieces. at level 2 it removes steel pieces and stops more from coming into the field. at level 3 it does the same as level 2 but I think it lasts longer.

am so new to this...lol...have not got beyond 2.4....any hints or helps?

I think by 2-4 you should have the orange totem powerup available to you. it should be your best friend; create two different matches of orange tokens in a row to add time to the clock. :)
really, the key to doing well in this game is using the totems. which ones you prefer to use (ie green or red) is up to your play style, but the orange one is essential for success. I've beat the game on normal mode and I'm 1 or 2 stages from beating it in hard. it's very addicting...
and one last thing, if you're not able to get many orange matches, if you have the purple totem, try using that. it often adds +time bonuses to the field.

ty jucati i appreciate the input on the blue totem strange i mentioned it and the following level i was able to get it :) lol I am on 4-3 now and trying my hardest. Also qb if you haven't figured out the stars you get on each level is how you get the totems i have changed them several times you can click the decrease to take it off that bonus and put it where you want it :) hope tat helps some

just to add to jucati's great tips, i've found that if i can't find enough orange totems the grey ones help. they change the color of the totems on the screen. it's random, but it changes a lot of them and even if they don't turn orange you can still earn points and try again. it has definitely helped me improve my game.

Thanks Bluhoteyes. I did persevere and finally on Sunday evening managed to get past the 2-4 barrier that I've had for so many weeks. I then cannoned throuh to 3-3 with no hiccups. I'm now a little stuck on the level where you require 75 crystals, but haven't experimented with swapping my power ups around yet. It definitly felt like it was getting easier till this second barrier, lol. I'm loving it more now than when I first started playing it. It's so playable, sometimes frustrating when a particular sequence of tiles you've been aiming to create is done so when you produce another match elsewhere that seems to set off a chain reaction that results in several matches including the one you wanted to use (especially the orange or the green colored ones, which I find the most useful when I'm running out of time).
I think this has been one of my most fun acquisitions I've got recently. I'm playing it much more than Luxor 3 which I bought recently, which I also think is a superb game as well as some of the more expensive games I've recently purchased such as Crysis and Unreal Tournament 2007
Anyone into graphical realism, should try the Crysis demo as it's amazing; though you do need a high end computer to play it with the settings maxed out. I can only just play it on high settings minus anti-aliasing with my recently built machine, though I haven't installed my new graphics card yet. There's a ultra high setting as well, but you need Vista to ply it in that mode. My computer freezes all the time when I use Vista so it's been uninstalled...what a waste of money that was. :(
Anyway, I've just finished my coddled together review for today (Magic Tea), so I think I'll return to Treasures of Montezumz to see if I can get past the next stumbling block. (hopefully to take my mind off the camera investigation I have to go through tomorrow. I hate having things put in my mouth apart from great food, lol). I've tried to beat level 3-4 several times so far and the nearest I've got to capturing the required number of jewels is around 65. So near yet so far. I can't wait to see what the blue totem does. Don't tell me please. :)
p.s.qb7894,
How are you doing on the levels yet? persevere as it's really wrth it. As Jucati mentions the Orange totem really helps as it adds a generous amount of time to the time you have.I wish they had a timeless mode with this game as well. It's been a most excellent game so far. Good enough to perhaps bring out an even more challenging Treasures of Montezuma 2 or a Deluxe version with the added untimed mode I suggested above, lol.
Keep on gaming folks as it's good for your brain. :)

Well so you know you get the blue totem on 4-2 :) lol i won't tell you but don't read the post as it does tell you what it does whiterabbit:) Sure was happy to see todays post for sky bubbles it seems to be a excited adventure to continue after i finish montezuma which i am stuck on 4-6 now and been there for a few days but i don't want it to end real quick so i only play one or two levels a day but heck that can take hours to do if you can't get past one i am with you whiterabbit on an untimed mode that would be awesome to see another clone of montezuma :) Just think though on 4-1 i think it is up to 120 gems to collect and i got 116 oh what frustration that was to be so close yet so far away:) Jucati that is one good tip that proved to be useful on doing the purple ones and that seems to bring out more orange totems not sure why but it does:) lol Anyhow will be back to post more after i give a try at montezuma again this morning:) happy gaming and hope to hear more from everyone on your quest to find the lost city

I did beat it once on hard mode. I've gotten all of the trophies except one... and I'm not sure what it's for! My intuition tells me that you win it if you can clear the entire game without losing once. I might be wrong, though~
does anyone know?Posted 17 years ago # -
Jucata did you get the one for rnding a level just before time ran out. I got a cup for completing a level with only 5 seconds left. I almost beat that today but just didn't quite get there by about a second, lol.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Whiterabbit, I don't think I've gotten that one! Thanks for the tip, I'll try it. :)
Posted 17 years ago # -
I am still on that darn 4-6 and been working at it most of the day time for me to hit the hay though so will try again tomorrow in the midst of continuing my baking spree:) how far have you gotten now whiterabbit? I got that trophy and i forget the other ones :) lol
Posted 17 years ago # -
well i have made it to 4-8 now and stuck once again :) lol have played it several times but no progress as of yet i will keep trying though as i am totally addicted to this
Posted 17 years ago # -
Well after 4 days i finally made it to 4-9:) lol

I can't believe how hooked I am on this game...I got through all the levels of normal, and after 5-12? and 200 or 205 jewels it unlocks the hard level. I'm now at 4-9 and 135 jewels I think. To make it harder, they seem to take your planned and next lined up jewels when you score, and it seems to have less moves available before wiping out and reloading your board/screen. I have to remind myself of what I've found to work best, which is always take the jewel move, and take the gray doubles as soon as you see them and as often as you can, because it gives you matches and frees up your board. I don't like the one that tells you where the matches are as it seems to mess up my rhythm, so I use my extra stars to try to get the scoring frenzies, unless I can't get it done and then I put them on extra time. I think my funniest trophy in the normal mode was 2 seconds left - either there aren't trophies in hard mode or I just haven't got any yet! I'm glad to see others here are hooked on this game - between it and MahJongg Artifacts, I'm a very happy GGOTD visitor! Have fun friends!

still playing this game and finally got to 5-5 and it has been a tough challenge hang in there whiterabbit on 75 jewels it does seem to get a little easier at least i noticed that made it through 3 levels tonight without dying once;) lol
Posted 17 years ago # -
wooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooooo finally beat the game level 5 is the last level in the normal mode i am on to the hard mode and finding it pretty easy compared to the normal mode i made it to 3-6 without even dying so keep up the good work everyone that is still playing it. One thing someone said they didn't receive any trophies in the hard level well i did i must not have completed it in the normal level cause all of them were still there i am missing two trophies so hopefully i get them :) hope everyone else is doing great on this game:)

Congratulations Bluhoteyes, I'm jealous, only kidding.
Because of my computer woes I've not played it since getting to around 3:4, but will restart it just as soon as I've finished my latest build. I'm just waiting for the new case to arrive, then I'm set :)
I hope your Christmas week is 'the best'

I only made to 3.3....feeling stupid...been stuck here for a week.....getting beyond hooked...lol...becoming obsessive.........HELP ME...........
Posted 17 years ago # -
qb7894, no need to feel stupid. Just keep at it. I finally reached 4.4 and last night I nearly made it to 4.5. I got 114.
What I do is try all the stuff for more time and bonus stuff. I have even "downgraded" the "3x"; it could be up to "7x" but I keep it at 3 and use the stars for other things. The orange totem is the best for time. Try to match orange twice one after another and it will give you more time plus you need to go after the clocks. I even downgraded the "Paint Totem" for a while as it kept messing up what I was working on.I keep trying different things. I have also found it seems to give you more things if you "shuffle" the board. And if you get really frustrated..walk away for a bit.
Good luck!

qb7894 I'm still stuck on 3:4 and apart from once when I was only one off collecting all 75 gems I've got nowhere near it since. I wont give up though.

Hello there. I guess key to moving swiftly through the levels is collecting as many stars as possible. We have found the following totems to be the most useful:
green (assign as many stars as it lets you), orange for extra time (indespensable), red (bombs tiles away and gives you the gems) and one of my favorites: purple (gives extra time or bombs)
If you get to a point where a shuffle seems unavoidable, try to leave it with an orange combo, you might get lucky and the second one turns up for the time bonus after the shuffle.
Anyway with X-Mas giving extra time not spend working, we finished the game in hard, saving the levels in between. If anybody is interested in having a comparision number of stars collected up to a certain level, we could dig that up.
Certain levels may become extremely hard to pass if don't have plenty of stars collected or have them not well assigned. Re-assign stars (possibly aiding in getting score frenzy leading up to extra stars) and try again. This helped us at certain stages in the game.

MMMMMMMM ty Alex i am going to give that a try and see if it helps but seeing i am already on 4-6 of hard wondering if i can do that but i will give it a try i is worth it want to finish that game :) Also have you played Destiny ? If you got it give it a try it is a great game :)
Posted 16 years ago # -
I'm STILL on 3:4 despite playing it every day since my last comment above. Again I came close with only one gem left to collect the other night. Now that Bluhoteyes has confirmed that destiny Architect works all the way through I'm going to break off from Montezuma for awhile and play that instead. The Atlantis game of the other day also inspired me to restart Atlantis Quest. Both games have virtually the same game play apart from the routes you travel and the artefacts you collect. Plus both of these games are slightly easier than Montezuma at the moment.
