I would like to start a thread regarding problems which occur with GAOTD software after the 24 hour activation and install period. During the last week and 1/2, I had trouble with several of the installations. and I believe that a problem with one of the installations may have contributed to the other problems. Additionally, some of the comments from other users lead me to believe that some of them are also experiencing the same registry key access error that has prevented me from installing some of the GAOTD programs and some other non-GAOTD programs. My goal is to share information and solutions about any GAOTD programs with other users so that each of us do not have to go through the process of diagnosing and fixing any problems alone. It would be nice if this topic could be stickied (if that is a word) to the top of the forums so it could be easily found by someone having difficulty with any GAOTD program. Unfortunatly, I do not know how to do that.

Last week, I had problems with several GAOTD programs as well as the inability to install two non-GAOTD programs. Problems with installation consisted of receiving a message that a certain registry key needed for installation was not accessible. A choice was offered to try again, abort, or ignore. Try again would return the same message, abort would end the installation and ignore would seem to install the app, but after installation, the app could not be used.
Earlier in the week, I had the installation of DefensewallHip cause two of my XP computers to hand during the boot following installation.
Since I could not afford to have my two main computers dead in the water, I went into safemode logged in as administrator, started msconfig, set it to boot selectively without the startup programs, turned on Windows installer services and after rebooting, uninstalled defensewall from both computers. It cost me an hour late last night and at least another hour early this morning, but both computers seem to be OK now. As I mentioned above, I had problems with several other GAOTD programs during the last week and 1/2, but since I didn't have this forum at that time, I don't remember all the particulars. My solution to the installation problems was to restore my computer to 11/20/07, using the XP restore facility. Everything seem OK now, but of course, I do not have any of the GAOTD programs which were offered between then and now. There may be another solution to the install registry key access problem, but I will have to re-find the link and post it here later. It has to do with permissions being mis-set on a certain registry key.Posted 16 years ago # -
I can't prove it, but I have reason to believe that Windows has a bug that dumps the registry sometimes. The fix is to make setpoints and/or reboot your computer. Then the registry would be saved to the hard drive and not lost in RAM.
Plus if you download the free ERUNT, it does a better job and can save your butt if Windows refuses to even boot up at all.

To save everyone from going on individual searches for BillW's suggested ERUNT freeware, here's a link. It's definitely a keeper for the old Tweaks & Tools Folder -
