I've had a request from my son-in-law, who is looking for a (preferably free) version of this old game. I remember playing it some years ago and remember how good it was. Does anyone know of a free version from a trustworthy site? (He's running XP, but appreciates that he'll probably need to run it in a DOS shell.)

You'll find links to free versions in the free games synopsis. That said I think Good Old Games have the rights to the licence now, so you may find the reputable abandonware sites have removed download links.

I also posted two of the later games Incredible Machines 2 and Even more Incredible Machines in Week 15: of the free games project:

That was before GOG got their sweaty hands on it. :) That said, GOG do include downloadable content such as avatars, music, game manuals etc and all their games have DOSBox coded into the game iteslf, so there's no faffing about getting the games to work. All of the Incredible Machine games are DOS, so you will require DOSBox if you decide to find the free versions rather than get the versions from GOG (and maybe DOT EMU).

Since it is currently being sold, I hope you will avoid freeware options if you can find it that way. It is currently available from GOG in The Incredible Machine Mega Pack. It currently costs $9.99, but for that you get:
Includes Even More Incredible Machine, The Incredible Machine 3 (contains all levels from The Incredible Machine 2), Contraptions and Even More Contraptions
The Even More Incredible Machine is the first game with additional levels. I have this package and it is great. If you are will to wait, GOG has sales where they usually sell games for about half price. I expect that they will have one at Christmas time that includes all (or nearly all) of their games.Dotemu does not currently have it, but you can find it on Amazon and probably elsewhere like E-bay. However, I think GOG will be the best legal deal.
