The best way is to keep it cleaner to start with. Karl often posts on the GOTD download page -- he uses Toolwiz Time Freeze to make sure he actually wants a program. Myself, I use VMs like win7's XP Mode. Otherwise you're heading into something controversial -- some people love cleaners & some loath them, while Microsoft will tell you to re-install Windows.

To clean up my PC I just format my discs and reinstall programs as and when they are needed. If I get minior problems i'll first see if I can sort if by finding the offending program and delete it and/or search the registry aand delete the keys associated with the problem.
I've already purchased all the app programs I need (converters, video programs etc). Occasionally I'll update them when they are on special deals (usually via BitsDuJour), otherwise I hold to the saying 'if it ain't broken..........
I've stopped paying into malware companies coffers by only using the free versions of their software's. I tend to visit the same sites these days and rarely trawl the net to unfamiliar places. I never open unsolicited emails and don't click on links I'm not sure about. The only time I get malware these days is usually when my kids or my wife have been using my computer, partly because I know the sites I visit are relatively safe.

In the US I've found, IMHO anyway, it's not worth bothering with the free versions since the big names are so often found on sale cheap or even free after mail-in rebate. Last one I bought was in May of this year, which cost $10 for a 3 PC 2 year license of BitDefender Total Security. It's worth that to me not to have to bother with the ads to upgrade from the free version stuff. That said, if I didn't find it so cheap I'd be using nothing but the free versions.

It's supposed to be a bit rare, but might be worth watching out for anyway when you have multiple users across Windows & Android -- if you use DropBox or similar to share files across devices, it's not hard to seed that account with an infected file or two, so one compromised device leads to all your hardware being infected.
