I currently have Bitdefender and all of a sudden I'm getting a Zone Alarm warning that it is trying to act as a server. Does anyone know what that means and if I should allow it? It seems to happen when I'm not actually on the internet so is it just trying to connect to the internet to update files?
Thanks for the help.

Hi Terri,
Any program that has automatic updates enabled will try to establish a two way communication at a certain point in time ,when checking for/downloading updates
(and Zonealarm will tell you it's trying to act as server). So in your case Zonealarm has to grant AVG permission to use ('listen to') a predefined communication port to check for updates at regular intervals..and retrieving them.
If you disallow AVG to act as a server you'll have to check for updates manually.
So yes, it's best to allow (and tick 'remember', if you have that option in ZA).Posted 13 years ago # -
Thanks Robert. The strange thing is that I don't remember ever getting that warning before. I finally went ahead and allowed it because it kept interrupting me with the request.

It looks like the latest version of ZoneAlarm was released 2-24-2011 and it may have a different set of automatic rules that no longer include "bitdefender". Consequently, you must manually give permission for the connection.

I know its not free but I put trust in Kaspersky. You get 3 licences so you can split the cost with family or friends.

as a side (but somewhat related) note - I recently installed Zone Alarm (free version), and I discovered that it was giving me major problems with GOTD downloads - more specifically, it was interfering with the activation process - so I immediately uninstalled it.
As soon as I did - all was well again with GOTD's activations.
I am sharing with you this info. in case someone else also has this same problem.
