Never tried it, but MediaCoder can apparently add subtitles.

Sorry maz but avi's are crunched to smallest size possible (usually just over 700 megs for VCD's or you can put 3 or 4 movies on a standard rewriteable DVD) and the sub titles and menus were removed.
A special program is used to rip a dvd to avi, mp3 ect. instead of ripping it with a standard program (ie Nero) and rewrote to a DVD otherwise the subs and menu would still be there. I do alot of avi's for my son who is in the Military and stationed in S Korea so he can download them to his PC and watch them.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I have some foreign films in avi format, and I have separate (.srt format) English subtitle files for them. It's possible to play the films with the subtitles on my computer using the VLC player (highly recommended program)--and I think it should be possible to add them to the conversion from avi to DVD format. I wondered if this Wondershare program could do that. I did search the FAQ on their website, but got no results for 'subtitles'
Keilaron, Thanks for that suggestion. I'll check out MediaCoder.

MediaCoder is among the ranks that VLC is. ;> Yes, it supports srt subtitles. I don't know if it supports converting to DVD, but at the least you can re-encode the movie (probably in a lossless format since re-encoding is generally a bad idea) and have it add the subtitles in the process. Seems to me, though, that any video-DVD-capable program should know how to add subtitles.
Also, I think that if you use mediacoder to add the subtitles, they'll show up permanently rather than become an option.Posted 17 years ago # -
You may find this useful:
SubMagic is a tool to convert, edit, translate, synchonize or create movie subtitles. It supports several subtitle formats, has a lot of features and functions, is easy to operate and best of all... it's free!

Bubby,
Thanks for that suggestion. I downloaded Submagic, and have had a twiddle with it,
but as far as I can see it's just for editing subtitle files--you then need another program to save an movie file with the edited subtitle.Posted 17 years ago # -
maz something just came to mind. I downloaded Peter Pan Plat. for my son. When I started it, the default language was French and then I ran into another avi movie that was in another language. On my dvd player I selected b (on some it may be listed as 2) and the output language was changed to English. I then tried it on Peter Pan and low and behold it changed to English also. I don't know if the person who ripped the movie set it that way or not but I was suprised to find out that just selecting the option changed the language.
I don't know if this info will help you or not because I'm not for sure if your wanting the subtitles in another language or english but if its the later try changing the option to b or 2 if your trying to get it in English.

Archangel,
I appreciate your suggestion, but unfortunately these avi files are stripped to the bone. No subtitles or alternative audio tracks. I'm going to try adding the subtitles permanently without any other re-coding of the avi, as Keilaron advised.Posted 17 years ago #
