Hello,
On Sept 10, CCleaner version 2.00.500, was released. I have not had much time to test the program but it dose have a new look to it, and according to the web site, many fixes and improvements from the last versions. It can be found here http://www.ccleaner.com/.
If you are not familiar with CCleaner it is a utility program, with many options, to clean out many types of temporary files, cookies, history, Windows prefetch files, etc., and it scans very fast. I would like to add, it would be a good idea to back up your registry before using this or any file cleaning utility, because some of these programs will have an option to scan the registry for issues.
Oops! I forgot to add, this program is absolutely free.
Have a good one,
Barry

i've used ccleaner and ncleaner. although both are good programs. i found ccleaner to be straight-forward. ncleaner has a lot of settings and if you are not careful you may inadvertantly delete something important.

BTW, you can add for cleaning more applications in CCleaner. You can put additional definitions in the default winapp.ini but it is recommended that use additional winapp2.ini. A help with explanation of winapp.ini sintax can be downloaded from the CCleaner forums.

I used an earlier version of CCleaner (crap cleaner) a couple of years ago and (probably my own error I admit)it totally wiped one of my drives which had several weeks of work on it as well as a substancial amount of downloaded programs that I'd stored on the drive.
I immediately disconnected the drive until I'd purchased a suitable recovery program, which didn't work and I ended up losing the files and ever since have been wary of downloading CCleaner despite the masses of glowing reports I've read about it.
I write this as a warning to those with little or no experience of using these sorts of programs. I'd always done my own cleaning, (wnich can be time consuming), or resort to formats and or de-fragmenting my drives to improve the performance of my computers. I think CCleaner was the first freeware alternative I ever used.

While I use CCleaner daily, I have had no problems with it (accidentaly wiping some browser cookies I preferred to be saved was the only "accident") - I agree with Whiterabbit 100% on the warning.
Any utility that claims to "clean", "erase", "repair" or "optimize" should not be run on any computer that is storing data you cannot afford to lose. Any software can have bugs, and many programs have options that when selected may result in dataloss.
If you have tools you are familiar with and do the job well - do not "experiment" or "play" with new tools before understanding what they claim to do - and testing on systems that have been backed up.
There are new programs and giveaways that perform similar functions to the software I already use and have proven time and time over to be reliable. I always ask if I really want to throw out software I know that works - and risk an untested (by me) replacement on my system.
When presented with the latest registry cleaner, disk cleaner, defragger, eraser, optimizer or whatever - ask yourself, "am I prepared to put my system on the line for this new program, or am I happy with what I am using now".
Just because it is a newer version, or because it is free - doesn't always mean the new program will be better suited to meet your needs.
Another tip - if you are unsure about a giveaway - don't be first to find any problems. Each giveaway is available for 24 hours. Leave the first 12 hours to obtain and read some feedback about the program from other users, before deciding to download. You will appreciate waiting if there are any issues installing or running the giveaway software.

I still use CCleaner v1.41.544. This not mean that the version 2.x is defective, simply I'm entirely satisfied with the old version and don't have needs to experiment with the newest release.

With the size of Hard Disc Drives increasing almost monthly, it seems a little pointless to me (personally) cleaning your drives of all the unwanted chaff. Considering you can purchase a half tetrabyte disc for around $100 if you know where to shop; there really seems to be no need to risk using such software to automatically delete those unwanted bits of programs that often weigh in at only a few bytes at most. It seems a little over the top, unless the data bits are causing problems already.
However I don't mean to criticize others for enjoying such softwares. I find my HDD's are 'spent' before I get to the stage that they are full of garbage these days anyway.
Also, as I have all my important data and programs backed up, I don't mind occasionally formatting my whole system to flush out unwanted programs. This seems the most efficient way of doing it and also helps to give you back your lost speed and efficiency. (I export all my essential software registry keys which makes it easier to re-register my bought softwares).
(Thankfully, unlike many, I have the time to do this whenever I feel like it)

Hi,
On Nov. 26, CCleaner has reliesed another update, mostly bug fixes and better detection and deletion of junk files. the link is in my first post.
I have used CCleaner close to 4 years now with no real problems with it, I usually only have the Old Prefetch data and Hotfix Uninstallers checked in the advanced column, and I hardly ever use the registery cleaner. The one change I would like to see made in the program is the deleted file sent to the Recycle Bin, like EasyCleaner dose for "Just In Case" retrieval.
Stay warm, it is like -36 degrees celcious with the wind chill here, tonight.
