Hello everybody

Screensavers rock.. that's why.
gtaillandier, the problem with giving away this type of sortware here (anti-spyware, anti-virus and such) is it needs to be updated constantly. One of the limitations at GOTD is "no free updates". This is to encourage people to buy the software when it's time to update, which in this case would be pretty much a daily thing.
There have been instances where a developer came back and offered a freebie (or cheap) update, but that wouldn't be feasible for software like this, I would think.
Oh, yeah. I almost forgot. Screensavers rock. Oy!!!
Incorrect. The policy is "no free upgrades to future versions" - definition updates are NOT covered by that restriction.
Hello
Can you tell me why Windows Care v2 Pro has been purposed some time ago ?
I don't know if Windows Care will work after 2007-09-04 ( expiration date I can see when I open the program ).
I think it could be a good thing to purpose a version of anti-spyware program. It can be useful for some time. The user can buy a new version when available.
I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're saying. I think "purposed" isn't the word you're looking for. If you're more comfortable with another language, please try that - many people here (including myself) know more than just English (I also know French) :>
I believe gtaillandier meant - "I think it could be a good thing to propose an anti-spyware program".
In my opinion - some of the best anti-spyware programs are already free (including all definition updates).
In looking at the giveaway terms and what is "permitted". This is really up to the developer. In the past - we have had some giveaways where version 2.7 (for example) was given away - and the developer has stated that all upgrades in the 2.x range were included (finishing with 3.0). In other cases we are given a version of a program and the following day - there is an update/upgrade available - and the giveaway key does not function with the updated release. It really seems to depend on the giveaway and the developer "on the day".
I look at the phrases "no support" or "no upgrades" to mean "no support - if the developer doesn't want to" or "the developer is not obliged to provide any support or bugfixes, if they so decide".
Some developers have in the past, come out and extended the trial (quite unexpectedly) releasing a new version that still works with the original Giveaway key/code.
Two examples of these giveaways in the past - Zortam mp3 media studio and Keriver Image
Here is one I strolled upon today.
BTW, that software is a HIPS, not anti-spyware.
A possible problem in including anti-malwares would be the "no support" and "no upgrades". We may know how long the developer would be releasing another version. There are free HIPS software out there, like Comodo Firewall 3's HIPS, Dynamic Security Agent, ThreatFire (formerly CyberHawk, free version features the PRO version of CyberHawk as said by the developer), System Safety Monitor Free Edition, Neoava Guard etc...
For anyone else wondering, HIPS seems to be Host Intrusion Protection Software. AmIright? :>
Please read this entire post before installing anything!!!
I just had the opportunity to install this on a friend's computer last night... and have just come home and installed it on all my computers today!
If you do not have any anti-spyware programs in addition to your anti-virus program (please tell me you DO have anti-virus installed!!!:O), then I highly recommend this program!!!
http://www.spywareterminator.com/
Thi program has NO adware or spyware attached to it (unlike some other "anti-spyware" programs which are riddled with junk and actually make your computer worse!)
here is some confirmation and information about the program for your peace of mind...
http://skins.funutilities.com/legal/attention.aspx
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crawler_LLC
There are just two changes I would make to the program while installing it! Don't let it change your default search engine or your home page! Pay attention to this when it asks you and make sure both those options are not selected!!! DO Allow it to install it's toolbar, because that's where the internet security protections are! The Crawler toolbar will block harmful sites and warn you when someone attempts to take you there! It's a very nice feature! It can even be configured to block porn sites and warez sites if you have children using your computer! Once the program is installed it will ask you what kind of protection you are looking for! I would suggest leaving it on the middle setting (the default one).
Just be aware that the real-time protection it provides is somewhat similar to a firewall in that it asks you for confirmation every time a new program tries to install itself. this can be a bit irritating (even though it is highly suggested for computers with kids on it!), this feature can be turned off if you wish and the program will then only scan for malware!
Another free program which provides similar protection to the above-mentioned Crawler toolbar is the McAfee Site Advisor...
http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ffmedia.html?cid=20070
it's a free utility which warns you about dangerous sites. The button will be green for sites which are safe and red for sites which are dangerous!
I use both this program and the above-mentioned Crawler toolbar to warn me about sites!
Anti-Virus software is different to anti-spyware software and you need both! You should really only have ONE anti-virus program installed, but you can install several different anti-spyware programs!
If you don't have ANY anti-virus software installed (naughty naughty you!!!X-( )... then I would suggest AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition...
in fact... all three programs on that site are good and useful and all highly recommended!
There are two other anti-spyware programs I would also suggest you use... They can be installed in addition to the above! And each one will find some junk that the others do not pick up!...
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ - Choose the Free Version!
The other is Spyware doctor... but the only free edition of that program is the one that comes with the Google pack of software...
Go here to install the Google pack... but when you choose which software you want to install with Google pack, I would not install Google Desktop (it slows down your machine and uses a lot of bandwidth), and you need to decide which of the other programs you want... it also includes a free version of Norton anti-virus.. but you may not want that if you already have anit-virus!
Google Pack... http://pack.google.com/
One more useful little utility for you...
I have heard a lot of you complain about the advertising on this site. Well there is a way to block almost all of the advertising on the Web... and it involves changing a file on your computer to block advertising sites... fortunately someone has already done this for you... and put it into a file for you... once you have installed his version of the file... most of the advertising will be blocked!
This is the page where it can be found...
it's about halfway down.. and it is called "hosts.zip"
you have to download that file to your computer and then unzip it... inside there is a file called " mvps.bat"
just double-click that file to install his version over yours!
You can read all the info on his website if you want for more info...
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
After you have installed that file... any advertising will simply give you a "not found" error message!! :D
AVG is not something I would recommend at this point in time. If you absolutely must use a free antivirus product do some research first (you can do a lot better than AVG).
A post I made discussing this in another forum (with graphics) so I'll just link to it.
http://forum.orbitdownloader.com/viewtopic.php?pid=13061#p13061
well, i don't seem to find Nod32 available as a box-and-cd+license package sold in my country though...
This topic seems to stray, but kinda blurred too. The topic starter wants an anit-spyware to be a give away, but gave a link to a HIPS software, which has a different approach in security. From what I know HIPS doesn't remove malware, it blocks it from access, while anti-spyware detects and removes the detected file and gives the option to remove it.
This is my list of free quality security software
AV:
Antivir PE Classic (good detection, bad update servers)
Avast Home Edition (just second from Antivir, reliable update servers, possibly has spyware/adware signatures too in its database?)
AS:
SUPER Antispyware
AVG Antispyware (formerly known as ewido antimalware)
Firewall
Comodo Firewall (either 2.4 or beta 3 with HIPS included, there are debates if it sends identifiers to Comodo's servers without the user's consent)
Jetico Firewall v1
Neoava Guard (HIPS, outbound only)
System Safety Monitor (HIPS, outbound only)
Dynamic Security Agent (seems to be a combo of SPI firewall and HIPS)
AdAware and AVG seems to lag on detection of malwares, so I wouldn't trust it
Regarding Spyware Terminator, detection isn't that really good but can handle a moderate job, and has a realtime protection that most of goody free AS lack.
Hello everybody
http://wiki.castlecops.com/HIPS/IDP_programs/services is a comparison list of HIPS.
Previously I used SSM, but I have discovered EQsecure ( it doesn't work with limited accounts ).
Prosecurity seems to be a good software. It's why I want to know if GOTD could propose this software.
It is a pretty good software. Check its outbound protection capabilities at matousec
garyvdh, their wikipedia page has been deleted twice and currently doesn't exist. I don't like that, especially what you say concerning it.
Good find, gtaillandier. I'm going to bookmark that one and have a look at it later.
Keilaron
Thank you for your compliment.
I hope it will help GOTD to propose Pro-security.
