I just love error messages that say "Please try again later".
If you keep trying... eventually it might work.
If you stop trying... then it is all your fault.
:D
I kept trying : it finally worked. Then all the comments became rate-able again .... sounds like a security issue as I can down or up rate anything to the infinite
Why do you want to rate a comment? To tell someone else his/her comments are useless and others how great they are? Who are you or me to even do that. I find alot of very useful remarks in comments rated way in the negatives and alot of other people do too and some in the positive that are c/p'd from another site. Just because you or me find something useful in one and not in another doesn't give us the right to rate the poster. Have you ever seen the same comment made by 2 different people but one gets a bunch of postive and the other a negative? I sure have. One example I noticed was a comment that said something like "Useless software".
Ha Ha alot of people have power thru the internet that they don't have in person.
Now with you getting a negative, tell me how does it taste? Doesn't feel good does it. And unlike it is on the frontpage, you know exactly who rated you in this thread.
Sorry for being alittle ruff but I wanted to get my point across. In my opinion the rating system on people who comment are useless. Lets concentrate on the software instead of the people posting comments.
Archangel,
"useless" feature or not, a glitch in one part of the system may be symptomatic of a bigger systemwide problem.
It's rather unfortunate that they don't do anything with the comment ratings. It isn't useless - at least, it isn't entirely useless. If they actually did something with it, it could be terribly useful.
And yes, we do have the right to rate a poster - the entire point of this rating is to give your opinion.
And finally, Archangel... who are you to make that reply? ;>
@ Keilaron
Explain to me what is so useful about rating a commenters post. To tell him/her whether to post again or not? Thats the only thing I can possibly think of.

Taken from your post....

You did! You can't have it both ways. (even though most would)
I included myself the post Who are you or me to even do that. I also included that I was sorry for being alittle ruff on the poster.
Sorry Jucati, I read your post and I was alittle loose with that term. If GOTD wants comments and software rating from downloaders thats one thing. The developers need the feedback to perfect there advertising, software description and maybe the software itself. Its a very good thing. I agree with you 100%.
Then we come around and rate the raters comments? LOL Some post that they will download and post again later and so on (we've all read them) and they should be snipped by whoever moderates them.
I was a Police Admin almost have of my career and compiled all kinds of information and I'm still trying to figure out Keilarons statement:
It isn't useless - at least, it isn't entirely useless. If they actually did something with it, it could be terribly useful.
The only thing I can see by putting this info to use would be to:
1. Post the top positive commenters name up in lights.
2. Post the top negative commenters name in flames.
3. Post a report with usernames starting with the highest + and the number they got down to poor guy/gal that got the most -. LOL (Like back in college with your score)
4. Send the the user with the most negatives an email telling them what there opinion is actually worth and send them to a commenters class. LOL
Please somebody tell me how compiling the poster/commenters ratings does GOTD or the developer any good,,,,,,,, I'm at a total loss.
Archangel, I don't understand your comment, but will post again later when I do. Meanwhile, similar comments that do all this and more can be found HERE. Besides, didn't you already give away this comment back in April? For you noobs who can't read this comment, brush the hay out of your hair and upgrade from windows 3.0. Is your comment compatible with Vista? WARNING! SumDuk's Best Good Virus Scraper detected a Trojan in this comment! Is anyone else having trouble registering this comment? Never mind, got it. I was typing it backwards.;) Wait a minute, your comment ate my registry! Can someone tell me how to uninstall this comment?
Screw this. I'll just wait for Bladed Thoth.
Maybe thats all this site needs for comments. ROTFLMAO
I just thought the comments were rated based on "how many people found this comment useful", and not "is this a good comment" or "do you like this person" or "is this person being ungrateful"?
Of course what I find useful may not apply to anyone else. Truly useless comments however seem to be "appreciated universally". These are the ones moderators should remove before they appear on the site.
(I've even seen comments appearing asking questions of the moderator... clearly unread).
I don't see the big deal ArchAngel. I don't think it is that harmful to say wether a comment is helpful or not, some sites actually lets users do this. Take for example cnet http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-security-and-firewall/mcafee-virusscan-plus-2007/4852-3667_7-31995275.html?tag=sub
But I agree you shouldn't call someone out and say their comment was stupid or something.
I thought so too BuBBy but I've seen so many "@ whomever". I've also seen the others you mentioned but maybe I/we see them differently. But really there is no big deal to me but when I saw this thread, I couldn't resist. I have nothing against anybody so let me make that clear to.
So whats the main objective of the site? Download software and comment on it or download the software and comment on it but on the way down rate the other comments already posted? LOL
Your right Michelle, it isn't.
I've always thought that the main objective of this site was three-fold. Visitors get to try out software for free/GOTD gets lots and lots o' traffic/Developers get their product exposed to an audience they wouldn't otherwise have access to. And a truly great idea it was.
The comment section could have been used to pass on helpful input to the developers, the GOTD staff, and to fellow visitors. But if you look back to the beginning of the archives, you can see how quickly it turned into a circus. The admins have done a shoddy job of moderating from the start and then seem to have given up altogether. Instead they have installed the "thumbs up/down" and then the "did you find this comment useful?", both of which are totally useless due to a combination of abuse and people not understanding their purpose.
More recently the "solution" has been to wait several hours between uploading batches of comments. I could understand this if part of that time was spent weeding out trash. But when a new batch finally appears, it's obvious that little or no moderation has occurred.
Human nature being what it is, I don't think any system can be put in place other than constant moderation that will stop the clowns. And at any rate, the moderators of the comments, if they exist, don't seem to care. If the idiots who are taking over the comment section are driving away the serious visitors and the developers, the admins should step up and take responsibility. They can't stop people from being stupid, but they can certainly stop them from being stupid on this site.
Well said HeadMan...
