Thanks everyone who wrote in to help (or just to laugh!) - appreciate the input
Actually it was BillW50 who gave me the clue - obviously it doesn't realise that I'm connected to the internet when I am (wireless connection to cable - always on), so I closed the window and turned up the TV. I found a station proclaiming that "global warming is a myth" (thanks BuBBy!), turned up the sound, punched a few keys and voila! - back up and running. (OK, in truth, I turned it off and fiddled with a few things that I thought might be confusing the picture and when I turned it back on this AM it was fine - so who knows?)
Archangel - What I like about it is that it shows temp, humidity and conditions for a few places (I can't start the day without knowing the weather in Vostok, Antarctica - BTW, for anyone else interested: -94, with low drifting snow this morning). Plus it gives a concise little report on local weather (for the next week) and you can update all with a single button.
If you know of any freeware that does the same, I'd be interested - in case this one buggers up to the point I can't get it back. You see, I'm friends with a family down the road who are farmers and Mennonite, so the upcoming weather (especially the probability of precipitation) is important to them. However, they aren't allowed tv or radio, so they call me to see if I have any thoughts on what the week's weather might look like (knowing that I'm not bound by the same restrictions). It's nice to have the answers right at my fingertips, so I can help them out, since they do a lot for me.
