Free Mcafee Virusscan Plus through AOL

MemberI use McAffee Virus Scan Plus. It must be something that is tailored for and sponsored thru AOL. You can download the version suited for you straight from McAffee and even register it. They give you a trial period (can't remember how long though).
Check out the other thread here in the forum about being tired of antivirus's and you'll find some links to very good programs that are for free!

AOL is free now, anyone can download it. All you need is a aol e-mail address and you can get one for free. At one time AOL had their own security center, it's antivirus was powered by Mcafee, and the firewall was powered by Mcafee too, and the antispyware was powered by PestPatrol. Now it looks like they done away with that, which is good, because I think they started putting ads in it.
This version looks basically the same as the msn version. There might be a couple differences, but that's it and you have to be an msn subscriber to use the msn version which I get it free with Verizon dsl, but AOL's version anyone can use for free. You just have to sign up for a free aol e-mail address.

MemberBecause AVG Free is just an antivirus, this Mcafee version is a whole lot more. It has a antivirus, firewall, antispyware, and quickclean, and even more. Mcafee Plus has a whole lot more in it than Avg free. That is why it takes longer for your windows startup because there is more processes running now.

ClamWin shouldn't be relied upon as the primary AntiVirus solution. It has no real time scanner support, and the detection & sig update rates are nothing to sing about.
As long as the user is aware of these limitations - it can prove useful when no other installed antivirus is available.

I seem to recall McAfee as having a lot of "negative interactions" with other software, with the advice for many problems being "got McAfee? remove it and try again".
Problem with all AV solutions, is you want:
1. Good protection
2. No false positives
3. No disruption of legitimate programs
4. Minimum resource and performance drain
5. No / low / reasonable cost, especially for updatesActually, the no false positives and no disruption are possibly the most important points, as patches and "safe hex" practices can mean you have less chance of being exposed to a virus, than to a problem caused by the antivirus.
I'm kind of leaning towards the Kapersky powered shield, as an alternative to AVG - certainly, other AV's have detected stuff that AVG missed, though the threats had already been neutralized by good patching.

MemberYes, it's good leecher. However I had a couple problems with it, a couple of weeks ago I was using it and my computer would restart within a couple of minutes. Restarted a lot, if it wouldn't have been for Microsoft I would have never known what the problem was. I sent the log in to Microsoft a few times with Windows and one time it opened up the browser and told me the problem was related to the antivirus and make sure I only have one on my computer.
I took it off and it didn't restart no more.
Edit: I'll tell you what though Leech. I had a bunch of false positives with Aol Active Virus Shield, mostly with realarcade games.

MemberI downloaded the aol Mcafee Security Edition because I was having a problem with the Msn Edition and the Security Center would come up no longer. I think the AOL edition is better than the Msn Edition.
I tried to download the msn one and had trouble so I uninstalled it and remembered about this the other day.
Some of the differences in the msn are and this version are
The aol subscription period lasts longer for months whereas the msn edition only lasted like a month before you needed to reinstall.
I don't see no Mcafee Quickclean in it though, however that is not a big deal for me as I downloaded and installed System Mechanic 6.0 (you can get it for free too).
If you didn't see my topic from the other day and you would like to get it for free http://www.iolo.com/ads/vnu/sm6promo.aspx click continue, then click proceed to checkout and fill out your information. Do not give them a yahoo or msn or hotmail e-mail address, give them another one to make sure it works. If you don't get it after you filled in your information try another one.
I gave them my verizon e-mail address and it worked.
But overall I like the aol edition better because it gives you a longer subscription period and you won't have to reinstall it all the time, but the msn version only lasted like a month before you would need to reinstall.

well, my screen name is the same with my AOL email, what i did was, e.g. "mymail@aol.com", all i did was to enter "mymail" and my email password. It will redirect me to McAfee website where I'll download their download manger and the serial number.
