Toys R Us sued over new kids tablet
The maker of the Nabi tablet computer for children sued Toys R Us Inc on Monday, saying the world's largest toy retailer stole trade secrets in preparing to introduce the rival Tabeo tablet this month.
The case is Fuhu Inc v Toys "R" Us Inc, Case. No. 12-CV-2308, US District Court, Southern District of California.

Sometimes it's the company or the person(s) running it, whose main goal is to file law suits later on. But I think a lot of the time, maybe even most of the time, it's the lawyers who set the environment & keep it going -- win or lose they make big money, & it's probably easy money, since most of the time they settle to avoid the higher costs of bad publicity, a long long trial, appeals etc. Every time Congress has proposed reforms, it's the lawyer groups who have spread the cash around & killed it.

Industrial espionage has always been a problem. There's big bucks to be made if they can get away with it, especially before patents are applied for.
If you've ever seen the excellent British drama about a group of con artists acting as Robin Hoods called 'Hustle', watch the episode called New Recruits (series 5 episode 2), where the team con a pair of shysters who steal the intellectual property of others. The program stars one of Americas many under-rated actors Robert Vaughn (The Man from Uncle, Magnificent 7, The Protectors, Demon Seed (voice only) plus many more), You only have to read his book (based on his PhD thesis) "Only Victims: A Study of Show Business Blacklisting" to realize why he's never won much despite his acting pedigree (he's only ever won a Primetime Emmy award back in 1972, with a few other nominations)

To right Mikiem, re: the lawyers. Despite both defendants admitting full liabilty with respect to my accident back in September 2005 (first defendant causing the accident and the second defendant, the accident emergency department of a trauma hospital being charged with gross negligence after sending me home with no treatment despite having four broken vertebrae, two of which were totally collapsed (I lost 3.4 inches in height)), it's still not been settled. Apparently I've finally got a date for the court case - March 2013. Over 7 years after the accident. The legal fees already stood at around quarter of a million dollars back in December 2010. since then my legal team have employed a Queens Council (QC) (due to the expected large payout - QC's rarely involve themselves in cases that nett less than a million) to help with the case. He is one of the best and probably costs an arm and a leg. I'm thinking the legal team and all the associated experts will together get more than I will. Ridiculous state of affairs. At most I reckon these shysters should get no more than 5% of the total.

I've got one for you, WR... on the news tonight heard about a woman charged with murder -- she apparently threw her husband through the window of their high rise apartment.
Her lawyers are going after the owner & the manager of the apartment building for not having windows she couldn't throw her husband through.

Apple's patent aggression harms us all.
Since Samsung was found liable for infringing some of Apple's mobile patents[PDF] on August 24th, 2012, there has been widespread anger directed at Apple. Many people rightly note that Apple's strong-arming of Samsung harms free software users everywhere and mobile users in particular.
Using software patents as a weapon, Apple is restricting mobile devices that eschew its escalating systems of digital restrictions management. Apple is also effectively trying to lock users into devices that cannot easily install free software, trapping them within its App Store which does not permit the distribution of GPL licensed works. This ruling will also help block replacements for Apple's iPad being distributed to students, a disastrous consequence for educators.
