Perhaps anybody in the community can give me clue about what to do now ...,
it will be much appreciated.
Since Saturday my laptop won't start up. It's a Toshiba and set to ask for initial password. It does that and then tries to load Windows XP. There it hangs itself up and gives the option of starting:
Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Last Known Config or Normally.
Whichever option I choose, Windows never comes back up. Choosing Safe Mode brings a running screen of "Multi(0)\disk \rdisk \partition(1)\Windows\System32|.... ,. The Windows screen pops up, but that is it.
On Saturday I was working, all normal. However, I was trying out how the Returnil works on the mojopac so I installed the "Engage" Startup Mgr, but did not like the software much. That was in "Off" Mode of Returnil. I logged off the Mojopac, but the Engage was still there (I guess the Mojopac and Returnil don't work together well). I uninstalled it with the regular Windows uninstall. If I remember right, it left the programm folder, which I then manually deleted onthe Mojopac. At that point I remember a message about a .dll to be deleted, which I did since I was on the Mojopac.
I then logged off the Mojopac and did more stuff on the laptop like finish checking e-mails etc..
Since then, a no go.
I do have the Aston running as shell on the laptop and I did not have any crash on Windows XP. Logging off was normal, but since then a no-go.
Anyway, any ides of what to do. Naturally I'd like to prevent a re-format.
I do have a backup of the registry, but no image since I missed the Keriver that day.
Thanks from Costa Rica!

I bet you didn't create an emergency disk did you? If not there are a few types out there that will do even major repairs. I'll do some looking and see if I can find you a link.

Well OEM versions of Windows XP can't do this, but retail versions of Windows XP can. That is to do a system repair from the install CD. See the following and read the warnings, especially #1.

I can't remember where I saw it but I think it was a Dr. Watson repair disk. I've never used it so I actually don't know but it claimed to do alot.

Hello everybody:
First thanks for the help. Here is an update on the going. No emergency disk and no image file (I'll guess I got to shell out the $$ for Acronis since I missed the Keriver that day). Wouldn't do a restore from the disk and couldn't get the instructions from BillW50 link working either.
Finally did a re-install of Windows from the original CD and now Windows is up and running, however only partially.
Some links don't work (Internet won't open, Outlook opens but does not send or receive, corrupted Recycle bin, To Do List won't open). Others do work like Aston is up, Altdesk is up, Sticky Password is up, the Odessa programs work etc)
Besides doing a backup of everything now on an external drive, I do have a reg file from about 1 month ago. So what are the next logical steps ...
