What is this software? Any one in particular? Or just in general?

Yes it is possible. But I can't talk about it as per the license agreements. Although I can tell you how to backup your computer in case you need to recover again someday.

Hi Bill,
I use Keriver Image (offered here) to back up the contents of the 60 Gig WD Passport that I use to run Mojopac on. I am stuck with a FAT32 file system, so I can't use any regular backup program.
Yes, I know that I can backup the FAT32 using say, NTbackup, restore to an NTFS drive and XXcopy it to the FAT32 device, but Keriver suppotrs any file system, creates smaller files, it is way faster than NTbackup and you can break the backup to files of any size you want. Very useful to create permanent backups in removable media.
Soo, I know that it is possible to backup an entire Windows computer and restore it in its glorious state.
Is that what you are refering to? if not, could you please tell me as well? I am extremely curious.

Final word on this - GiveAwayOfTheDay.com for many giveaways go to some lengths to ensure that software is installed only on the day of the giveaway. While I am not personally privy to the reasons or justifications for this - I can only assume that this is done at the request or by agreement with the software developers.
If the software was intended to be reinstalled once the GiveAway had expired - then the additional checks and restrictions would not be in place. It is possible that without such a restriction on reinstallation, some (or many) developers might choose to not participate and offer the full version of their programs for a "free install".
Posting in these forums, and asking how to bypass the limits or conditions of the giveaway - how to reinstall software from past giveaways that have expired, isn't something that will be answered in these forums.
If the developers and GOTD wanted the software to be reinstalled - you could just run setup again (as often as you liked). The only supported installation method of GOTD software giveaways is by running the original downloaded files from GOTD.

Yes pauloparra! Those backup programs works very well. Although there are other ways like just copying the Program Files folder and exporting the Windows registry to a backup drive or CD/DVD. Although I suggest only doing this if you do nothing else. As it isn't as great as what you are doing, as about 5% of the GAOTD programs won't restore with this barebones method. But about 95% will. :)
And I agree with you BuBBy. Although everyone who cares about their data and software on there computer(s), is/are expected to backup their computers to mass storage. And I am sure both GAOTD and the software developers expect this as well too. And by doing so, you can restore your computer (including GAOTD software) back to the same state as the backup. Thus if something horrible happens like a hard drive failure, you can restore them all back.

Yes - a full system backup is definitely the way to go - and generally for much more important reasons than keeping your free FLV converter or game of Tetris.
Far too often, someone will ask me how to get data or programs back that they have lost - and shortly afterwards they admit that they have never made a backup of their files.
Sadly some people are their own worst enemy. If you are wondering if this applies to you... Consider this:
Tomorrow morning, you turn on your computer and it doesn't start up. All the data on your hard disks is GONE. There is NOTHING on your hard disks at all. You can't even boot into Windows - it's gone too (some would see this as a positive step).
So you have lost everything. What is going to cause you problems because you have lost it? What files, financial records, emails, photos, music are you going to miss? These need to be backed up.
Every computer can fail or lose data at some stage (normally when you don't have a backup and need the files/data the most). If your computer has never failed... if you don't have a backup - you are probably going to be next.....

Hi Pauloparra, I am interested in Keriver Image after reading your post. I have been trying to use Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8 but it is taking days to do an image of my c: and d: drive (total 60mgs, 40mgs used) to an external drive. Would you have any idea how long Keriver Image would take to do the same? I used to use Paragon Imaging 6 on my desktop and I'm sure it never took that long, but that was NTFS whereas my laptop is FAT32. I don't know whether that makes a difference though. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

40MB *should* take less than 1 hour to backup to an external drive (It probably depends on the speed of the drive, and would require a data connection somewhat faster than the carrier pigeon it sounds like you are using at the moment).
Definitely sounds like something is not right. Are you connecting to the external drive using a USB cable? Maybe your computer only supports USB1 (slow) instead of USB2 (fast).

Well nola, maybe the external and the internal drives have errors on them and need to be fixed.
I get this sometimes, about once every 4 months when I image c: and transfer to l:, c: being windows drive and l: being my usb 2 external hard disk.
Use the windows error checking and also might be a good idea to at night run it and when you're out at work.
Then it takes care of your time rather than being frustrated waiting.
Do your external drive first, double click my computer, right click the drive, hit properties, hit tools tab, under error checking hit the check now button, check both radio buttons and it will check fully, if you want just an error check only check the radio button named 'Automatically check file system errors'.
If it's your windows drive you need to reboot, if you only use the 'Automatically check file system errors' this usually takes 10-20 minutes.
If it's not a windows drive, it will do it whilst using windows, it can lag your system, however this is why I said about doing it when you have something else happening.

Thanks Guys for your help, I have come to depend on this forum for answers to my problems and you have never failed me yet. I have given both your answers some thought, and now realise that, while the laptop is USB 2.0, I am using a USB 1.0 hub which the external drive is plugged into, so I imagine this could be the problem. The external drive is a brand new Maxtor 160GB. However, I am going to do the windows error checking as suggested by Lee tonight first, then try again with the external drive plugged directly into the laptop and will see if this makes a difference. I couldn't believe the length of time it was taking, and I sure hope this is the answer. Thanks again, you will hear from me if this doesn't work.

Oh NolafromNZ... keep in mind even if you get an USB2 hub, everything on that hub will drop down to USB 1.x speed if even one USB 1.x device is used on that hub. Hubs are great, but they suffer from this one limitation.

Should be able to change bios settings to run u.s.b. 1.0
Might be a pain if you have other peripherals attached that will only work under u.s.b. 2.0

Hi Nola,
Sorry for not answering sooner, we had a 'little' flood problem at the apartment complex where I live and I had to stored the computer on a safe place.
Anyway, Keriver Image is able to create an image of my 60 GB WD passport that has 1.5 Gigs of used space in about 10 minutes. A 60 meg image should take seconds to create.
Every time I have checked the backups I have found no problems at all.I use my desktop to create the backups, but Keriver writes them from the passport drive to my 160 GB Maxtor backup drive directly.
I never used Paragon, so I can't give you any advice on that, but if it is taking so long to create such a small image, there must be a problem somewhere. Lee's advice is very good.
One easy way to check if it is a hardware problems is to copy different size files from the laptop to the external hard drive and vice versa. Start with small size files and write down how long it takes to copy. Then try larger files and see if the speed stays the same or not. You could also have a software problem, like a faulty installation or a misconfiguration of the backup software
Also make sure that Paragon supports FAT32 file systems. Not all backup programs support all file systems. For example NTbackup, Microsoft's backup program, does not support FAT32 file systems.
Keep in mind that you can use USB 2.0 on any laptop that have a PCMCIA Card slot. There are hundreds of cards that, once inserted in the PCMCIA slot, allows you to use USB 2.0 devices at full 2.0 speed. Some require type II slots and some require type I.
As an example, my laptop came with only one USB 1.0 connection which I use for my mouse. I bought a type I slot PCMCIA card that gave me 4 USB 2.0 connections. I tested the speed of the connections and it works as advertised (480 Mbps). Almost all of these cards are fully backward compatible, that is, they also support USB 1.0 and revision 1.1 devices as well.
These PCMCIA cards are cheap. I just did a quick Google search and found this one for $16, but there are cheaper ones.
If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Ciao,
-Mario

Hi, back again,
I removed the USB 1.0 hub and connected the external drive directly to the laptop and I also did as Lee suggested, error checking both drives. The c: drive had one little error on it, but that was all, however, when I tried another disk image using Paragon Hard Disk Manager v8, it kept telling me the drive was in use. So, I got out my old faithful Paragon Image v6 and this worked fine, it took just over the hour partly because it insisted on doing both c: and d: separately (the newer version was imaging the whole hard drive at once). Still, just over an hour is much better than days, and I am very grateful to you all for your assistance.
BillW50, I will keep your advice in mind when I get a new hub, and I am going to check and see if the PCMCIA cards with USB 2.0 hubs that Mario mentioned are available in NZ, if so, that will be my next purchase, if not, I will search for a USB 2.0 hub. There were none available in NZ a few months back when I bought this one, hopefully one or the other are available now.
Again, thank you so much Gentlemen, what would I do without you? I live on a farm 3/4s of an hour out of town, with only solar power, hence no landline, so to be able to sort problems out with this forum is a godsend, instead of waiting for the fortnightly trip into town. You should all have a very warm spot in your hearts!
