   Hello,

   I don't know if this is useful or not, but I thought I might share anyway. All the programs mentioned in this post are free, unless they are mentioned as a reference. I know they can't compete against the best ones, but many people are on a budget and it is hard to trust freeware unless it is recommended by knowledgeable people like the ones in this thread.

   Diskeeper Lite 7.0 Build 418 is free. It can be found at MajorGeeks.com. It is only a tease though. The most useful capabilities of Diskeeper are turned off, but they are fully explained and shows how easy it is to use them.

   Don't bother looking in http://www.freedownloadscenter.com. The Diskeeper links offered there are broken and McAfee Site Advisor doesn't like this site at all anyway.

   At MajorGeeks I also found O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware Edition, which is version 3.5.562. They also have links to English versions of O&O Software, but I didn't find anything that looks like FrankW's offer link in French. The company that sells it is at esd.element5.com which I think is Dutch.

   I know enough French to fill the OOdefrag pro V6 application. When I was done I was told that the application will be reviewed and it may take days to get a response.

   Finally, there is a little DOS utility called contig at Microsoft's sysinternals which allows you to defrag individual or sets of files. Quoting from the web page

   "..., it is difficult to ensure that particular files that are frequently used are defragmented - they may remain fragmented for reasons that are specific to the defragmentation algorithms used by the defragging product that has been applied. Finally, even if all files have been defragmented, subsequent changes to critical files could cause them to become fragmented. Only by running an entire defrag operation can one hope that they might be defragmented again.

   Contig is a single-file defragmenter that attempts to make files contiguous on disk. Its perfect for quickly optimizing files that are continuously becoming fragmented, or that you want to ensure are in as few fragments as possible.

   Contig works on NT 4.0 and higher. Contig can be used to defrag an existing file, or to create a new file of a specified size and name, optimizing its placement on disk. Contig uses standard Windows defragmentation APIs so it won't cause disk corruption, even if you terminate it while its running."

   Hi,
   I've been using DIRMS (Do It Right Microsoft) the free edition on two computers and it seems to work well. It might be worthwhile checking out the site

   The author explains why he takes issue with other defrag programs. I also use Buzzsaw on one machine and it appears to do what it claims. That pc requires less frequent full defragging.

   I'm very glad to hear it. I also received my reg code the very same day I applied to the offer.
   O&O Defrag is really a good product. Altough there are now 2 versions that are more recent than 6, 6 is already complete and fulfills all my needs.

   If someone needs some help to understand the offer form that is in French, maybe I can help... :)

   Sorry about the double post, but I think I should let people know that the upgrade installs in a different directory and creates a different executable. Both seem to work, even though the service which was required for the previous version is gone. Am I going to have a problem down the line? Should I unistall the old version? I really don't know what to do.

    Thank you for the valuable referral for O&O Defrag. I noticed on the site when you choose to view it in English, there is no mention of the free offer, so it is unlikely any of us in the US would have stumbled upon the French page or the offer.

    One problem, however, on the form, USA is not offered as a choice for country. If any of you who have successfully received the Reg code are in America, how did you work around that?

    Hello

    A german form isn't there to, but i got a serial! use this site and fill out the fields with anything you want with a right emailadress. after that you will get a serial, which works with all versions of O&O Defrag 6.5.

    Sorry for my bad englisch, i'm german ...

    Auf dieser Seite kann man sich registrieren und irgendwelche Daten eingeben, nur die E-Mail-Adresse muss stimmen, da dorthin die Seriennummer verschickt wird. Dann einfach das deutsche Setup von O&O herunterladen und beides zusammen nutzen. Hat bei mir funktioniert.

    Of Course... That makes sense. At least the people in France recognise the "United States" item. Clearly this french web designer thought that one through carefully.
