   By the way, for the optimising, you might want to look into BootVis and the special defrag option; Also, you might want to look into msconfig and Autoruns and the like. I kinda like the idea of monitoring it though, but having another process running 24/7...

   I was a big fan of bootvis until I read this:

   Please note that Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system.

   Which was really the whole point to why I was running it. When I thought about it - it made sense... if Microsoft had a way to speed things up - why wouldn't they make it a part of the product (XP) by default for everyone?

   Startup Defender ???? or another program....i would love to be able to make sure all my startup progs are needed & not harmfull. BUT even if I could look at what is starting up, I do not know if it is "needed". How do I know the BAd progs?? even if I have software to stop it? Ok, that said what prog is best to do this job? Thank you, in advance.

   Anvir Security Suite give's information on each start up item. It maybe an idea to try the free version as I do think it also gives info about each start up. Though I found Ashampoo's Win Optimizer flagged those that were important.
