   SVG is an open vector graphics format - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics

   What that means is it contains directions for an app or printer to draw the graphic, rather than a bunch of pixels making up an image. Because of that it's both editable & scalable without any quality loss -- the same SVG graphic should look the same on a postage stamp as on the side of a bus. And files are quite a bit smaller [that's why Flash was originally created -- it let you use vector graphics in the days of very slow modems].

   At any rate, for creating pro [biz] logos ideally everything is kept in vector graphics format [SVG or proprietary equivilent, e.g. Adobe Illustrator], with Pantone or equivalent colors used & recorded -- that way the Logo is exactly the same wherever it appears. When it needs to be combined [e.g. overlaid] with an image, a vector graphics app can import the image on a background or other layer, or, can render it to .png or other image format -- can use Google as already posted, export ,png w/transparency from the Sothink app, or just print to an image format using something like PDF Creator. The best known, open source vector graphics app, AFAIK anyway, is Inkscape [ http://inkscape.org/ ], which is also available from portableapps.com .
