   Flash to run everywhere: the dream is dead

   Web developers are angry with Adobe. Tom Arah's angry too - but for different reasons
   Emotions are running high in the world of professional web design and development, with words such as “shambles” and “betrayal” in common use. This anger is directed at Adobe’s controversial decision to dump its Flash plugin for mobiles. Fellow RWC columnist Kevin Partner summed up these feelings in a recent blog post:
   “The irony is that it isn’t Steve Jobs’ famous hatred of Flash that has caused this turnaround – the true villain of the piece is Adobe itself. By abandoning development of Flash for mobile, it eliminates Flash as an option for most websites... Farewell Adobe. Delete.”

   It has been on the cards for a long time - first apple, then android (from August 15 ) - then I expect flash in regular browsers will be deprecated, as support and new development eventually disappears from Adobe).

   Flash will eventually bow out to HTML5 - even Adobe are now promoting tools to migrate flash content to HTML5 within Adobe Flash Professional. It is amusing to read the Flash developer comments who swear it is business as usual - the ship isn't sinking... as the water comes up over their ankles.

   The announcement that Flash support on Mobile devices was ending was made around November last year.

   Since then Adobe started to promote migration tools for Flash -> HTML5.

   The basic principle of write/code once, run everywhere started with Java & won't end with Metro. I'd hazard a guess that if Google or Facebook had bought Macromedia instead of Adobe we'd be in a different place today. :)

   the true villain of the piece is Adobe itself. By abandoning development of Flash for mobile,

   IOW Apple iOS & Google's fragmented Android OS -- difficult when both companies oppose you, harder when addressing the different graphics hardware of the myriad Android devices, which reading app reviews on Google's app store, not too many people have gotten 100% right. What I find harder to understand is why having a mobile site, where Flash shouldn't really exist anyway, is considered by some to be so terrible.

   Adobe lost their almost total domination of the graphics & print world following the same flawed strategy that led WordPerfect to go from 1st place to an also-ran so minimal many [most?] have never heard of it. Make your software hard, make it expensive, & make experienced users feel like their some elite cadre of pros that can rightfully ignore the riff-raff. Seems like the same game may have been playing with Flash devs. How dare they not use Flash on a site for cells/tablets? Ummm, how dare you not learn how to design/code a mobile site without it. :) I mean Really, why in the world would I expect Flash content to run on my dual core, 1 GHz tablet, when it challenges an i7 CPU & a higher end graphics card, AND not play vampire with the battery? :0
