Thanks for the link to the site. I was talking in another thread about cleaning my desktop. If he didn't write these programs for free, he should get with this site. Well I downloaded EmptyDesk and its just the ticket. Thanks again.
Another brilliant Freeware site, which was also suggested in the GAOTD 'Comments' page. This one is even more extensive and comprehensive. Something for everyone.......

Archangle:
Just browsing and saw your post above related to clearing icons from your desktop. Thought you may be interested in taking a look at Iconoid > http://www.sillysot.com/ . I've been using this one for a couple years. Great little app to clear the desktop icons automatically. One click on desktop restores them for time you set (seconds), then auto-disappear again. Hint: As long as mouse continuously moves on desktop icons will stay visible until you stop moving cursor around or move to another window. Then the timer starts (?-5 Secs) and they disappear. Left click and they reappear. Many options! Unlike the one you found, this ones automatic. (Icons won't show in a screen capture while hidden either.) Can change via right-click desktop context menu or settings via tray icon. Also has a 'Hot Corner' feature. Nice small app that does what it advertises very well. To much to list here.

Some more sites, if I may:
The OSSwin project: Open Source for Windows! - Should be self-explanatory. A lot of these are also available on Linux, so it's a great site to find multi-platform software
http://portableapps.com/ - Programs specially packaged to be portable (i.e. you can put them on a removeable drive, and they keep all their data on that drive (no reg keys used)). Note that they are NOT fully secure (e.g. PortablePuTTY temporarily stores it's data in the registry(!), deleting it after use, which some have noted could potentially be restored) but they're still very nice if you travel a lot (Or lose your main internet connection :<).
http://www.oldversion.com/ - Guess! :D User-supported, so make sure to submit some versions you have if they're not on there :>
The Berkeley Utilities - For Unix/Linux dual-booters; These are common Unix/Linux utils ported to DOS/Windows. Never feel away from ~ again.
http://www.tinyapps.org/ - Applications made or known to be really small.
Keilaron:
Nice links! Thanks for posting them. I found a few nice little apps on http://www.tinyapps.org (only link I didn't know about). Oldversions is a good stop off to find some free versions before they went commercial. I've used that one many times.
You're welcome, BigThunder1. I have to thank you, too - you just made me realise MailWasher isn't there. I still have their free-to-distribute beta version from - you guessed it - before they went commercial.
Sometimes apps on Oldversions get removed by request from the software owner/developer, or if they pose a known security risk that won't get fixed. This in an email inquiry to them about a software a year ago I was looking for (don't remember which one now).
BTW - you forgot to put the link in for the OSSWin Project which is found here > http://osswin.sourceforge.net/ . ;)
Thanks for the link BigThunder1. I'll check it out later but the one I found isn't bad.
BTW I got in on the ground floor of Mailwasher. Then it became mailwasher pro. I paid for it years ago but even with all the upgrades, it doesn't cost any additional. This developer is a very good guy and use to work with people that had special needs. He would then modify the app and send you another one.
Enough about all that. Thanks guy.
Your welcome Archangle. I wasn't knocking the one you got earlier, just thought you might have been interested in Iconoid dependent on your needs. I have a ton of icons on my desktop that make it look cluttered and busy so I found Iconoid a real blessing. I like the automatic hiding aspect amongst the other features it offers. I didn't dwnld the one you picked up but I did look at it. It appeared to me it is a manual one you have to click each time you use it so I didn't try it. I've run across numerous apps for the job of keeping the desktop clean looking, but I've yet to find one that does what Iconoid does as well for my needs. And I've not found one that does what Iconoid can do as efficiently that doesn't use resources in the background. This one uses nothing until you interact with it.
Like they say, different strokes for different folks! As long as your happy with your find and it serves your purpose that's what counts, right?
Enjoy.....
Oh I know you wasn't. I like yours better with the timer. This one is manual. I know the feeling of a desktop full of Icons. I created folders so I could group them. Guess what, I filled over half the screen again. LOL
Thanks BigThunder1 your like me, theres always an option.
Well I'm glad I could be some help, and your welcome. LOL... yhaaa, I did the same thing once upon a time with grouped folders. Man what a PIA that was trying to remember what was where. Even when categorized it was difficult at best to find everything hidden inside those folders. And yes, there's always an option. Glad Iconoid works for ya. As I said, I've tried a bunch of 'em and haven't found anything to top Iconoid to date. A well thought out and designed little piece of software if I don't say so myself. If you don't already use the Desktop toolbar on the desktop taskbar, you may want to turn it on and enjoy it now too! It's like having a second-start-programs-menu which includes all your desktop icons when you have 2-? apps open and don't want to minimize all just to get to the desktop. Speaking of minimizing open windows, the 'Hot Corner' feature of Iconoid will come in handy next time your doing the finances or other personal biz and the kids or unwelcome eyes walk into the room. Just put your cursor in your chosen Hot Corner and viola!... all windows instantly minimize to the task bar! Pretty cool feature amongst the others.
I installed Iconoid on a family members PC running Win98se to eliminate the background color highlighting behind the text of desktop icons (as well as it's other features) because that's one of those little pesky things about 98 that was/is a PIA to configure. Seems once you do, then install a new software app, 98 seems to get a mind of it's own and resets the desktop 9 out of 10 times. That Win98 OS is getting replaced with XP real soon btw. 98se was a real milestone historically, but it's time is long past and may it R.I.P.. Linux has come a long way since then as well. Although it has it's shortcomings (as ALL OS's do). I think it's maturing nicely and giving MS some competition. All be it slow considering the market share, but that's changed enough recently to scare MS into a deal with Novel SUSE. And we all know MS does nothing that doesn't concern it's market share...... Nuf said.
Enjoy Iconoid Archangle! Hope it serves you as well as it does me.

BigThunder1
BigThunder1 - I didn't miss the link. It was, as links are supposed to be, inline. Just hover your mouse over the title and you'll see it. Sadly, links aren't terribly visible here, and I'm this close to overriding the CSS on this site because it is poorly done.
(Blockquotes, for example, don't show any visual cues whatsoever.)
The reason I didn't bother with three out of five links is that the title of the site was essentially the URL, and therefore didn't say much.
Archangel - Yeah, but was that before the transition to the other company that now takes care of it, or even now? I know that Mailwasher went from free, to commercial, to being handled by another company altogether (Or is he behind that company? I don't remember anymore.).
Keilaron:
Your right!! You didn't miss it and I apologize for the implication. Apparently when I moused over it yesterday I experienced a small piece of yesterdays site problem myself in that respect and didn't realize or stop to think about it. All I got then was the text cursor indicating no link present, yet all the others were fine, go figure. But... your link is there today! Intact and standing tall! Oh well. Another mystery to add to the archives I suppose. :)
I suppose considering yesterdays issues I should have been more thoughtful under the circumstances rather than make a friendly accusation of oversight. Generally when a link reacts as such, it is due to an oversight on the posters part which is very common in forums. Happens to the best of us. Didn't mean to sound offending in my post. Just ass-u-me-d it was an oversight. No biggy, and again my apology for the implication.
I agree with you on the CSS and relative html tags. I commented about the 'block-quote' tag seemingly not working in another post hoping someone would take notice and try to resolve the issue. I also tried the "a href" tag and it didn't work the other day. I had to edit my post and remove the tag and just post the link itself. Things may be quite a handful for the PTB to keep on a leash for the moment. A little comment/complaint here and there to keep them aware of issues until they get fixed is likely the only way they can be made aware of some issues. Then too, there may be issues behind the scenes we aren't aware of. All things considered here, I think they're doing a reasonably fair job at dealing with the problems that do arise for the most part and trying to make all happy as best they can at the moment.
Regards
Mystery solved with the "missing link".
(There was an anchor tag - but no href)
I fixed it. ;)
Thanks for that note BuBBy. I knew I wasn't seeing things when there was no link there yesterday. Since I couldn't obviously see the problem, I assumed there was no link which is typically whats left out. It was underlined and highlighted fine, but when I hovered over the link it didn't show in the taskbar and as I stated to Keilaron, I got the text cursor rather than the active link cursor. Glad you were able to fix it. It worked this morning and I just chalked it up to yesterdays site access problems etc.
Whoops - I was sure I had pasted the link in. What did I do, then, I wonder?
At any rate, all's well, and that's what counts ;)
Some good conversation going on now. For your further edification, have a look at this link. It's a Freeware and Open Source Software blog with simply LOADS of good info and download possibilities. If you like it, I do have others up my sleeve! Keep on surfing.....

Jerry Chance
JerryChance, you've put some nice links up here too and I thank you for them. Good sites to browse.
Here's a few more;
http://www.onlythebestfreeware.com/default.asp = Not extensive, but a good selection and building.
http://www.freshdevices.com/ = 4 apps offered. Fresh UI very in depth hidden system settings tweaks all in one place. Fresh diagnose will tell you everything you want to know about your PC from hardware to software and everything in between. Both apps highly recommended. Registration isn't necessary unless you want the hardware benchmark reference feature in diagnostic app. All you need is an email address for reg'n which can be used forever on any machine the apps are installed on.
http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/ = Very extensive listing of some outstanding free apps. User ratings included. They also host an extensive listing of shareware apps as well.
http://www.perfectdownloads.com/ = Nice variety of freeware.
Now this is a great thread. I can see everyones desktop filling up with icons. LOL
Thanks for all the links members.
Thanks to all for the heads-up on Iconoid and OSSWin Project. Have you tried the 'Best Vista Downloads' site? The apps are not strictly for Vista, but they do work on Vista (nice change there, eh?). Both freeware and shareware. http://www.bestvistadownloads.com/
Hi Bobby,
You and Archangle are welcome from all of us I'm sure! Link you posted is a nice site. Just checked it out and it looks like it's fairly popular. Search by keywords. I noticed it seems one has to reset filters on each new page which I don't like personally, but no biggy because they're right at the top of the results section. Thanks for the addition Bobby.
I like Iconoid. However, I find a better approach to organizing desktop icons and clearing up the desktop is represented by 8start Launcher (free). I describe it in my weekly blog on free and cheap utilities, http://jonathanstoolbar.blogspot.com (#25, 17 June 2007). There are other similar launchers, too (I've heard good things about Rocket Dock but haven't tried it yet).
I hope this is helpful.

BuBBy:
Thanks for the links! Do you know if they can be used together?
I have a lot of icons to manage (thanks to GOTD and GGOTD!) and at first glance they seem to have different and possibly complimentary advantages.
Hi BuBBy,
Thanks so much for the RocketDock link, it ROCKS! I've spent hours tweaking and customizing it.

There is a web page at Listible.com entitled 'The Most Popular Freeware for Windows'
Obviously a controversial claim - but have a look, it has 195 resources listed altogether - some that you will be familiar with of course. However, there are also some unfamiliar programs well worth investigating. The web address link to click onto is as follows :
