Typing “.com” is probably a reflex for most veterans of the internet, but you might want to start weaning yourself off that habit. Google has released a partial list of new top-level domains it has applied for, and some of them are a little unusual. As expected, Google is trying to pick up .google, .docs, and .youtube. Interestingly, Google is also going after some unrelated domains like .lol as well.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is preparing to roll out new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) that allow companies to have any word after the dot. The window for filing applications for new gTLDs ended this week, and the full list of proposed domains will be out on June 13.
A company called Radix, which exists solely to operate new gTLDs, has applied for some popular options like .movie, .law, and .book.
The new gTLDs might be key to innovative ways of categorizing the web, or just useful for making jokes. I for one look forward to visiting googlewave.lol.
