I had the previous GOTD of Inpaint which is my favourite giveaway so far, so with the new feature of todays GOTD I had to try it.
I installed it but there is no response when I try to open the program, either with the desktop shortcut or directly in the program files folder.
It has overwritten the previous version I had, which worked fine, so now I don't have any working versions of the program, please help?

Hi I have Windows XP. I installed it in a different folder so I would still have the old version, I put 'Inpaint 4' in the options during install. I checked the box to launch program upon finish but it didn't open. The shortcut on my desktop for the old program was overwritten and no longer worked so I tried from the start menu and then directly from the 'Inpaint 4' folder in 'Program Files' but neither worked.
I uninstalled it with it's own 'uninstall.exe' and reinstalled in the original Inpaint folder where it has overwritten the old version and still doesn't work.
I have uninstalled again and reinstalled but still no reaction from trying to open it.
Any help would be appreciated. Would I even be able to get back the old GOTD version? Please tell me if you need any more info, thanks.Posted 12 years ago # -
ps. I don't know if it matters but I also closed firefox when setup said to close all other apps. I don't usually do that as I'm usually still on GOTD's download page when I install GOTD's stuff.

The trouble with this 'activate' process is that it works only for the administrator account that activates.
When you Run as Administrator (whichever administrator account you choose) you are operating in that admin account 'context'.
The registry entries are placed in the admin a/c branch, and the start menu entries go into the admin account's menu. Have a look.. Log off, log on as that admin.
But WE ARE ALL NOT ADMINISTRATORS! Sheesh! Admins are for administering. Users are for using.
We need to get GotD to change this activate process. It's irresponsible IMHO.[below this box: '..separated']

I am the only one who uses my pc so am already logged on as the administrater.
I have reinstalled many times now with reboots to be sure. I've even downloaded the trial version from their site and the prog just will not open for me. I don't know what else to try.
I will see if I can do a restore soon to try and get my old version back.
Thanks graylox, I will try that app you recommended for next time, it sounds useful. I always wondered what I would do regarding all my GOTD programs if I had to reformat or reinstall windows and that app sounds like it might save them all from being lost.

I'm sorry, that is a misunderstanding.
Revo just makes a snapshot / backup of your registry before uninstalling a programme.
For a real backup you should use tools like e.g. Backup & Recovery 2012 Free.
Paragon programmes - and similar of other developers - are repeatedly given away on GOTD.The giveaways of GOTD may not be reinstalled. Those are the rules.

But when you have a complete backup of your system, you won't lose anything.I still hope you get Inpaint running. If not, there is still the online version: http://www.webinpaint.com/

I am Ravindranath from India. I also do have the same problem as was written by one of the previous members. I installed it and when clicked finish a window popped up saying "Inpaint.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I had been using Inpaint 3.1 and because of this, I lost that also. I tried to download it installed it 2-3 times but the same thing happened. Would you please advise me what I could do to get this fixed? I am using XP 3 Thank you.

Ravindranath - please don't post your email address in these forums. If people want to reply directly they can PM you - or just post in this topic (which will possibly also help other users).

We need to get GotD to change this activate process. It's irresponsible IMHO.I half agree with you - applications keys should either be stored under HKLM (LOCAL_MACHINE) so the settings are available for everyone, or HKCU (CURRENT_USER) just for the local user. The problem is some apps need admin rights not to write the registry information but to copy files or make changes to system settings.
This isn't the responsibility of GOTD to fix, but for the developers of the program. GOTD doesn't decide how an application is registered (or if registration is required), that is determined by the programmers who wrote the app (and they each have different ideas on how it should be done).

It seems that nobody found a solution for the bug.
As far as I have seen in the comments, all users with problems are running XP 3.I would recommend you, to ask Teorex for help.
They are not obligated to answer, because there is no support for giveaways, but I know Teorex as helpful and cooperative.Maybe they don't even know, that there is a bug with XP 3.

When installing the new version of Inpaint in a different folder to the previous version of inpaint, and then registering/activating it, the program likely uses a common location to store the reg/serial information.
Activating the new version probably overwrote the old versions activation information in the registry. That would be why the old version no longer works. Usually activations are only good for the single GOTD version.
Why the new version doesn't work, I've no idea. Perhaps there are common components installed elsewhere (like in the windows folder...eeek) that are causing some type of conflict.
Teorex are probably the best ones to shed some light on that.
(If it were me, I'd try to uninstall both versions, then install just the new version and see whether it picks up the GOTD activation information correctly).

I have XP 3, and was able to install Inpaint 4.3 successfully into its own Folder, as separate from Inpaint 2.4 and Inpaint 3. I posted a comment (#79) on how to install another version of Inpaint in case one wished to keep earlier versions. Each of the versions still runs fine.
I noticed that some of the later comments offered suggestions to solve various issues, so you may want to check (if you haven't already). Otherwise, restoring to an earlier restore point might be your best bet. Good luck ~

You are right BuBBy. I used SpyMe tools which showed both registration codes in the same place. (from a before and after scan). So the new registration will overwrite the old registration code, even if you install the programs to different paths. :)
p.s.
I scan my registry before and after installing anything these days then keep a record of the changes. It allows me to manually clean my registry if I feel I need to. This was following the installation of that grammar checker Whitesmoke last year which really messed my computer up.
