   OGS Mahjong

   OGS Mahjong is a simple mahjong solitaire game with nice 3D graphics and relaxing soundtrack.

   The game was updated to Version 0.9.1. The developer has fixed a settings dialog crash and some other bugs. Also, the classic tile set has been set as default. You can download the most stable version of this game from the Opensource game Studio or the latest unstable version., as well as via the Desura client.

   There are several videos, but all are earlier versions of the game while it was being developed, so I've not bothered to link to them. The following video should be sufficient to give you a reasonable idea as to whether it's worth downloading. :)

   Download OGS Mahjong via Desura HERE or as a free standing game HERE. You can also download a new spring tiles theme from the main OGS page HERE. This tileset will probably e incorporated into the game with the next update, but for now (april 2012) you'll need to add it manually by unpacking it to the res/themes folder found inside the games main folder.    I like mahjong so I had to give this a try. However, it might work for others but it does NOT work for me! It is as slow in response as Spirits of Metropolis is for me and the developer of that game never did figure out why I have so much trouble.

   It takes anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds just for a single mouse click to register. That is unacceptable. Even when I found how to turn off that extremely annoying music, it took a while to do it. I actually had to mute my PC in the meantime just to be able to hear myself think! Trying to understand the hover-hints on the toolbar is difficult if your mouse is several icons beyond where it last registered and gives the info.

   Also, that spring tileset is for version 0.91 but the only stable downloads are for 0.90 so it's not usable.

   I tried, but I ended up using revo-uninstaller on it. It just doesn't work for me. I have better things to do with my time than wait for mouse clicks to take.

   Before someone recommends it - all my drivers and software are up to date.

   There must be something conflicting with it for it not to work. I had no problems running it on my computer. I've not tried it on any of the others just my main computer which has 16GB of system RAM and 6GB of video RAM so I've no problems with lack of memory. how much system and video RAM do you have Dragonlair? Just wondering whether that could have been a reason.

   All that said, there are lots of free mahjong games around, so I expect it's not a great loss.

   You could try the OGS forums if you wanted. You may find a solution to your problem there.

   I don't have anywhere NEAR that amount of memory and just the basic NVIDIA graphics board that was pre-installed on this computer.

   However, I can't say if it is or isn't enough and to say that I need as much as you have is not reasonable. Most people don't have that much RAM with or without video.

   No where could I find the requirements for this game and I find that a serious flaw.

   I did check the forums and they are NOT designed to handle problems and most of the threads (only 8 total) are in Russian! There are only 24 posts total in the forums so it's not likely to help me much.

   When trying to find it in Revo to uninstall, I did a search on Mahjong (not all games spell it the same way) and even with that spelling alone, I found 22 uninstalls!

   It's a shame because it looks so nice but I'll live without it.

   I did find a "Hexagonal Mahjong" a while back (I think on MPC) but it just wouldn't even start for me. I REALLY wanted to try that one!

   Hi Dragonlair,

   Yes it does look nice. I like the look of the tiles and the Japanese setting.

   With respect to the amount of Graphics RAM I have; it does seem rather excessive, but ultimately I'm a bit of a graphics whore. As I love games, especially open world games where the environments look almost real. In other words if a game looks amazing I'll purchase it without even bothering to try a demo. Silly really as I've ended up with some damp squibs because of that attitude, but overall I've been happy with the games I've purchased using that criteria

   Anyway, when I was building my latest computer just before Christmas, I decided to go purchase a custom graphics card called a Gainward (made specifically for gamers) . The RAM is quite excessive on each card at well over over 1GB, but games are improving yearly and I planned to build my newest computer to last several years, (i.e. build to take account of the increasing use of high definition textures in the latest games). I will be giving that computer to my son next year when I start building another computer.

   Even with my previous number 1 computer, which is now a general purpose computer it had several Gigabytes of RAM and 1GB of video RAM, but that wasn't enough to play some of my favorite games such as ArmA II and Grand Theft Auto IV. Well not enough to maximize the graphics. Both of those games are open world. And require a lot more RAM than most other games due to the amount of environment visible. In both games and other games like Just Casue 2, you can see literally for up to 20 miles. To be able to max out all of the settings so that I could appreciate the beauty of those games I needed more than 1GB of graphics memory. With my new build I decided to go for an SLI set up with my graphics cards instead of just the one I can actually use up to three cards with the motherboard I purchased and there are even newer boards that allow you to use two cpus and four graphics cards (as well as eight system RAM slots each of which can hold up to 8GB of RAM making a total of 64GB of RAM. Placing more than one graphic card on a motherboard and using the links that connect each card you can multiply the benefits of each card. It just happened that the Gainward cards I purchased were on offer at the time.

   I understand your need for higher graphics, even if it isn't the norm. I also understand how the games work as therapy for you and I have absolute NO problems with that. Anything that helps with chronic pain without the need of drugs has to be very positive.

   My point was that if this product has very high graphic or system requirements, then those requirements should be clearly posted. Even for normal requirements, they should be reported.

   I'm more the "casual" gamer (according to Amazon.com's definition). I like the Match 3, Puzzle/Logic, HOG, Breakout kind of games. Those that don't need the very high graphics or system resources.

   I like that there are so many kinds of games so everybody can find something that they like!

   Sorry for waffling on, I tend to do that a lot these days. I'm sure it's the opiate meds that open me up as I never used to be so 'talkative'

   You are right about the requirements needing to be clearly marked, and I also agree that it's great that there are so many genres to choose from........

   I still remember when games were strictly 'real' arcade only (not the online Real Arcade, lol) and cost a minimum of 10 pence a shot (around 20 cents) to play for a few minutes. When we last visited Orlando in Florida there was a five story building (forgotten the name of the place now) that was given over to computer games of all types, on one floor there was a whole section of original arcade machines with all the old games including Star Wars, one of the first breakouts called The Revenge of Doh (which I remember playing when I was serving over in Germany with the armed forces back in the late 1970's), and other games from the 80's era. Amazingly you couldn't get on any them as everyone was glued to them (you paid a large fee to get into the building; the tickets lasted the whole two weeks we were there, then everything was free to play. The kids and I loved it...... (not so sure about my wife).
