Since this was originally posted way back in week 55 it's been updated. It was posted with several other games, so I though it a good idea to repost it in it's own thread. Any fan of elite will appreciate this game. I remember trying to dock my ship for the first time at one of the space stations encounterd in game when I first played it back in the latish 80's. That was an essential part of the game for refuelling, and selling & buying goods etc. You can read many reviews of the original Elite, most of which will tell you a story of an amazing game rarely recaptured in space sim games. Oolite comes close to attaining that magic many of us old gamers felt when playing the game. Many late night were 'wasted' playing the game. :)
Oolite: (20.5Mb)
Oolite is a space sim game, inspired by Elite, powered by Objective-C and OpenGL, and designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up, modify and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be changed by using simple, free graphics packages and text-editors.
In the original Elite - released way back in 1984 - you took the role of a space trader ferrying goods from one start system to another, earning money, improving your ship and exploring the stars. The game was open-ended, with a randomly generated universe expanding beyond the opening solar system. Oolite takes the exact same, brilliantly compulsive gameplay and makes it slicker, faster and better looking - for free. If the core package isn't thrilling enough, there are expansion packs available, too.
