I have been recieving this error message for a few days now when I install the GOTD software. My computer runs Windows XP.

Make sure that Internet Explorer is running when trying to install and activate your software. Read my FAQ's in the Game discussion stikies. although game oriented, you may still find a fix that works. :)

clear out your internet cookies, especially the giveaway ones. They may have become corrupted. Also try rebooting your modem and/or router.

Still crashes... :( even when I have Internet Explorer open. I've already cleared cookies/temp files etc with CCleaner.

need info software is ? windows ? Event Viewer ? Looks like Antivirus, AntiSpyware, Firewall ? stop it or go to new will fix it.

If you were once able to install the programs and now can't then something changed on your system. Either through an update or the installation of a new program.

Open "Add/Remove Programs", check the "show updates" box and scroll to the bottom... do you see a Windows Update that coincides with the onset of difficulties? Windows updates generally come out on Tuesday, so if your issue started Wednesday or Thursday then consider temporarily turning Windows Update off, uninstalling any updates from last week and trying to install today's giveaway. If you can install today's giveaway then you know the source of the problem (and odds are it will be fixed in the next set of Updates).

If that doesn't work then open the Event Viewer and see if you have other errors listed when you try to run setup.exe. If so, resolve those errors and try installing today's giveaway.

Lastly, you can try uninstalling the last successful giveaway installation, understanding that you'll not be able to reinstall it. It may not be playing nicely with your system.

I am using Microsoft Security Essentials with the default Windows firewall on Windows XP.

XP Firewall stop nill so it not the firewall

Microsoft Security Essentials do you get a pop from Microsoft Security Essentials ?

At this point I would say stick the thing into a debugger and figure out where it hits an exception. But of course not everyone knows how to use a debugger. Could you post the entire error text? In the crash box click "click here", and there's an option about technical data. Paste everything here. I'll see if I can find where it's crashing, provided all the code is loaded the same.

That's not the right info. When you get the crash box, click on the blue "click here." link, and then click on the "click here." at the end of "To view technical information about the error report, click here." Give me what's in the box with the heading "The following information about your process will be reported:".

What you've provided is the metadata for Microsoft's Error Reporting server. There's no exception info in there.

Looking at the code address from one of your previous posts, the function the address is in is called after activation, probably for determining whether or not you have the GOTD bookmark in IE and Firefox. Unless you can't actually install any software, it's not a big deal. All the messages that might be printed in the post-activation dialog box is available in readme.txt.

If you ask what's causing it, it might be corrupted bookmarks.html file in your Firefox profile. Haven't really looked at why the crash happens.

I am using Firefox Portable and Chrome Portable, only Internet Explorer is actually installed on my C Drive. The giveaway installs but crashes before it is able to be activated automatically. (So for the programs that do not come with a serial number to manually enter, they do not work on my computer).

There's about 30 or so modules, I couldn't copy all of the text from the dialog error box. Windows keeps chiming at me when I try to copy from it.

When exactly does the wrapper crash? Before the GUI shows up, before connecting to the Internet, before/after decryption (high CPU usage), or after the GUI disappears and the installer is supposed to launch?

Just what I suspected. You'll be fine. All the activation is done up to that point. The only thing you won't get is the little message that tells you to read the readme, the serial number, or go to a certain link. All that's in the readme already. Setup.exe typically only contain the installer, so if the installer launches and you can install the software, the rest is vanity. For Activate.exe, it contains an exported registry file (or rarely some other stuff). Same deal, the crash only occurs after activation, when the wrapper is trying to prepare the "Activation Complete" box.

I don't think so. I have had software not activated even when setup is complete. So when I run the giveaway software it is still in trial mode. :(

I'll give you a few other things to try:

First, make sure your hard drive is OK. If you don't already have a drive utility run HDDScan and review the SMART data. If you see warnings then run more exhaustive tests using drive specific diagnostics from the manufacturer's website. It doesn't sound like you've got a drive problem but it's pointless to troubleshoot a failing drive.

Next, heed the admonition to close all running applications before installing...

Note the icons in the system tray. Log off and log back on... do you see more icons (Systray icons missing)? Close everything in the system tray except the anti-virus and firewall, retry setup.exe.
Open CCleaner, click tools, click startup. Disable everything except the anti-virus and firewall. Reboot and retry setup.exe. If successful, re-enable items until you isolate the failure.

The last two items are very similar and you may have to try both as not all applications put icons in the system tray.

If still no joy, verify that you don't have any corrupted system files. Run System File Checker. If any errors are found and corrected then reboot and retry setup.exe

Run CCleaner on the registry. Fix all errors, save the data, reboot and retry setup.exe

Lastly, see if there are driver updates for your hardware. If yes, update one at a time and test setup.exe after each update. Rollback to the prior driver if the update didn't fix the problem. (You didn't update all of your drivers with one of the driver utility giveaways just before the problem started did you?)

Geektips, on more reflection it occurs to me that your problem is with the Windows Installer. GMMan has demonstrated that setup.exe is doing what it's supposed to do, it's a "wrapper" that activates and installs the program but that "wrapper" is so tight that it won't allow the system errors to escape. I should have realized that when you indicated the only error in the Event Viewer was setup.exe because the only error that could be associated with setup.exe is a corrupted download.

So, rather than the tedious tasks I listed above, try installing an old program that you know used to install or download the trialware version of the current offering. Without the "wrapper" the normal error reporting should work and you should see the error(s) either on screen or in the Event Viewer. For there, it's a simple matter of determining what program or piece of hardware owns the problem dll. Rather than you tracking down the source of the error, let the system do the work.

And now I'm wondering how many of those "the program didn't register, you cheated me, it's all a scam, why did I just get the trialware version, etc" comments might have arisen from the same problem.
