Hi,
There is so much great information that is given out from you all. I have spent the last week or so going through the archives and finding a lot of wonderful stuff for people who have been on here for awhile.
As a newcomer, I have tried to find the answers to my questions from the archives, but I am at a loss/So I hoping I am doing this right to ask my questions. If not, please tell me the correct way. So here goes-
1.Is there a glossary for newcomers to learn the special words, phrases, abbr. you all have been using in the forum? I looked, I could not find one!
2.If someone wants to get more information from an inactive post, what is the best way to ask that question?
3.Also, what if you wanted to get in touch a specific member i.e because of his posting and wanted to find out what worked and again it may have been from months ago ?
Well, I think that is all for now.
Thank you

Ohara,
I'm sure one of the moderators will be on shortly with an official answer, but I'm not doing anything, so I thought I'd give it a start:
1. There's no glossary that I've ever seen - If there is something you don't understand, try googling it - If that doesn't help, you can ask virtually any question here in the forums - Nobody will laugh (I don't think!) There are a lot of newbies here, and you are probably not the only one who wants to know - so ask away.
2. Likewise, on a question from the archives or for closed questions, just include a copy of what you are referring to, so that people can understand what you are talking about.
3. There is no way to talk privately to anyone except moderators - it has to do with the need to control any perception of impropriety in reference to registration numbers for the software. There was a good discussion of this, exactly, a couple of days ago (I'll try to find it for you.). But there really isn't any objection to just asking the kinds of questions you mentioned - Most people who post here come back often, so they will answer when they find your question - or someone else may know.
Anything you need tonight?

Nice answer Face. ;)
Help with acronyms, or stuff you don't understand... just ask. You may not get a hand holding one on one tutorial... but at least I will try to point you towards resources so you can educate yourself.
The only things I could add to Faces' answer - there is a search facility towards the top of the screen (handy if you have a rough idea what you are looking for).
You can click on a user name category (only "Member or Moderator") which appears under a persons name - this brings up a screen with a list of their recent posts, and threads they have started. Useful if you know "who" said something... (but limited to about the last 30 posts/threads)
If you have a question you don't want to ask because you think you will be laughed at - you can always PM me (I won't speak for Lee here). I cannot guarantee I won't laugh at you, but I will definitely try to give you an answer (I'm fairly n00b friendly). Just remember you might get an answer faster if you just post to the forums - like today I haven't been at my PC for probably the last 10 hours... (I've had real life intruding on my cyber lifestyle).

Thanks BuBBy,
I can't find that discussion, do you remember where it was?

Well as my mamma always said no question is too dumb only if not asked.
Thanks for the help. Sorry I haven't responded sooner but life happened, school getting out, getting our troop ready for another year of scout camp. My time at the computer comes last, as I am sure we all know the feeling.
Thank you Face, Bubby, I only had a few questions to start with but I wanted to get a general feel for the forum-do's,don'ts, language, how to's and I thought I was just not looking in the right place for the answers before I tried posting. Not finding the answers I wanted, led me to post.
I know I will learn with you alls help and much patience and not much laughing, please! most of it along the way trial by fire, but everyone is so passionate on here that something can be said and taken the wrong way and oh boy- we have trouble. Thats the reason I wanted to know how to contact a person directly to avoid a possible problem for the future. But, I guess I will mind my manners and walk gently.
I see I can PM (what does it stand for?) some members as they have it at the end of their post, although not everyone has it. Are there only certain members we can PM to? how is it done?
What is RSS Feed? no idea-I took a look at the past discussion and with it being way over my head- and yes I am -constantly looking up words on google, but even then the computer gobbly-gook they speak on the help sites can be more confusing. Why can't they just answer simply?
About Registry keys, I searched on the Windows Help and Support website and looked up registry editing. It does give step by step directions, I am going to try. But, if anyone can put it in easier terms, please help me!!!!!!
I am still unclear exactly how to save them after I have installed it on my computer (activate, setup, install done that)Anyone has steps on that, help would be appreciated!!
I don't want to go against any rules. But, if it can be done, I could use the help.
Okay, I think that will do me for now.
I thank you again for being a great help to me.Posted 17 years ago # -
Sorry all,
Computer glitch-I told you- a beginner
Be patient! I'll get better.Posted 17 years ago # -
Some obvious rules (well I think they are obvious).
No asking for (or offering serials), keys, cracks, warez, licenses, re-activations of past giveaways. All of this isn't permitted. If you are looking for a warez site - this is definitely NOT it.
Do not post or ask for private contact details for or from other users - such as email addresses. All communication and sharing must be "above board" and "in the open". Posting website URLs to legit sites containing legal software is OK (I prefer freeware).
If you wish to quote an article or document - rather than copying the article, it is better to just link directly to it on the original site (that way we don't get in trouble over copyright).
1. PM = Private Message. You can send a private message directly only to a Site Moderator (Lee or Myself) or to an Administrator (typically for website errors, failures - issues that need attention, problems relating to the site itself)
You may receive a PM from a moderator or admin - and the notification will be displayed at the top of the screen (where it currently says "you have no new messages")
2. What is RSS? Glad you asked. http://www.whatisrss.com/
3. Instructions for installing the giveaways are included with each download in the readme.txt. Typically run activate.exe then run setup.exe (both before the giveaway period expires).
4. Editing the Registry. Don't be in such a hurry. The registry is a big bucket of settings that controls how windows operates. Changing the wrong thing or deleting something important can turn windows from "something that does what you want most of the time" into "something that doesn't do anything". I suggest if you really must tinker - look but don't touch (at least until you are a lot more confident with what you are doing).
Anyway - rather than me just answering everything I can think of - I'll wait for the questions to be asked. (That way, I've got some time to play with the new giveaways myself).
Good Luck.

Amen on the Registry. It's best leaving it alone. As BuBBy stated, it not only controls all software/programs on your PC but also your operating system. Only someone that is very experienced in modifying the registry should even try.
If there is something that you feel is wrong in the registry, your best bet is using some type of registry cleaner or repair. But again all software ask's you to look at each entry to confirm if you want it removed. There are check box'es that are beside each entry and are checked so if you just clicked "Clean or Remove" then there gone. Thats where alot of people screw up because if it was something that didn't need to be removed one or more programs may not work or even the operating system on your computer. If it was a minor mistake most cleaner/removers have some type of rescue where it will put the last "Batch" (group of something) of entries removed so you'd be back where you was before you removed them.
Like they said above, take your time and learn in small bites. We all started at the same point. So ask questions all you want. Someone will help.
