   Sword-wielding gamers, shirt-ripping retailers, cake-eating customers, and ass-kicking Heads of Marketing--you will find that and much more in this series of short videos we have prepared for you guys to watch over the weekend. You can watch the first one below, but stay tuned because we will upload a new video at 12:00 PM EDT every day until Monday.

   What are they for? What are they advertising? We won’t say--you know how we are--but you can look at our “Making of” album for the videos here, if you’d like to speculate wildly ;)

   Remember when advertising used to just be up front about stuff? Languid shots of fields with Orson Welles waxing lyrical about the taste of peas, and then “BUY PEAS!!!” in big letters flashing for 12 minutes as the William Tell Overture played. You knew where you stood with adverts like that: to buy or not to buy (peas). But now adverts are teases, advertising that something might be happening in the future. It’s a cruel psychological trick, to make you think you could miss out. GoG.com are advertising in such a fashion right now. They released three in a series of four over the weekend, bigging up various parts of their service, attacking DRM, regional pricing, and sparse freebies on offer at other online stores. All they’ll say is a ‘”Newer, Fresher, Bigger” GOG.com lands Tuesday at 09:00 AM GMT!’

   The last time GoG relaunched, they pretended the site was being shut down permanently, so at least this isn’t that. There’s more to this than just a relaunch, but there are no clues in the adverts as far as I can see. Just GoG reaffirming what they do. We already know what they do, so what could they add to the services listed below to make it more appealing?

   Good Old Games - CDPR Giving Away a "Legendary" Game Thursday

   From Eurogamer:

   CD Projekt Red will give away a "legendary" PC RPG for free on GOG.com this Thursday, 5th April, Eurogamer can reveal.

   The giveaway coincides with CD Projekt's Spring Conference, which is being streamed live at 5pm GMT (presumably 6pm BST).

   Note that giveaway has nothing to do with the "extraordinary" conference announcement CD Projekt has been teasing.

   I bet its going to be Darklands. It's one of the oldest and IMO best early cRPG's from the early 1990's and was until very recently free to all via all of the big abandonware site. That is until GOG got their hands on it.

   I used to have two copies of the boxed set. It had 11 (hmmm or was it 9 or 10) floppy discs, a superb manual and a large map included plus a key bindings card. I gave one of the games away to a friend and the other one went in a skip several years ago as one of the floppys had become corrupted. Don't know what happened to the map and manual though. I have a feeling they are up in the loft with a pile of my books.

   I wonder if the guys in the videos are the GOG owners?

   Personally I think a lot of their really old games such as the text based ones and the very early pseudo 3D games should have an even smaller pricing for example $2.99 instead of $5.99; still I love the extras they include and the fact that everything is DRM free.

   I ended up purchasing Darklands even though I downloaded a free version a couple of years ago because of the integration of DOSBox into the GOG version, plus it was on a 50% sale. :) so only cost me $2.99. Can't complain about that, especially as I loved the game back when it was first released. I used to play for days at a time without hardly any breaks. Wish I could find the floppy I'd saved some of my progress on, though I don't have a floppy on my main computer now; decided not to bother. I do have one spare just in case, lol.
