Running this game on Windows 8.1, in the very first room when I get to looking at the phone message
the Read button at the bottom of the phone display is not clickable, as the in-game hint and an online guide say that it ought to be. I've tried running with W7 compatibility but to no avail.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm having the same problem. Samsung 370R with Windows 8.1. Window updates all installed and graphic driver at latest level.

I'm having exactly the same problem - windows 7, 64 bit. Also, am not seeing the program on add/remove program list, so having problems uninstalling - deleting program folder from installation location has not worked.

I've installed from MyPlayCity and have gotten past the phone part. Closed MyPlayCity version and reentered through gamegiveawayoftheday shortcut and proceeded. So far its working. Definitely a software download issue, not a hardware issue. Hope GGOTD can replace download with a complete working one soon.

I had no problem downloading and installing the game but sometimes when I click on something such as the statue or the phone it does not work. The statue parts would not turn until the time ran out. Clicking on read produced no result at all. Frustrating in what looks like a good game. Win7 64bit system. I see others are having the same problem so maybe there will be a fix from the developers?

Yes, I have the same problem as not being able to "read" the note on the phone.
I was able to download and setup the game-like yesterday(Ontario, CA.) but I, like the rest here, can't get past the cell phone reading part. I am not a fan of HOGs so I won't download it from elsewhere because I just can't afford the bandwidth. I have more important things to do with my bandwidth.

It's 5pm Central time here and I decided to try it myself. Took 2 attempts to download; first time stalled out but second succeeded. In first chapter had same problems as many others - statuette wouldn't turn and couldn't read the note in the phone. Unable to progress further. Looks like a nice game though. Hope Alawar and GGOTD can fix it and extend the giveaway time. If it does get fixed would someone please post here so we will get a notification?
This game is available at both Jenkat Games (no browser headaches with them -- but watch, they want you to install their game manager) and MyPlayCity.com. Some people seem to be forced to allow their hijacks while others are not. If you see them where they make you do it (install or next buttons gray out), try downloading the file using another browser! Yes, that does make a difference!

I'm sorry it's taken me util almost the end of the giveaway to post this; I had no problems playing the game on Friday, in preparing my review (mainly for the images as I used Gamezebo's review). Apart from an amazing number of posts (most of which I didn't moderate adequately) and which were mainly to do with the 404 and phone problems, but still took up quite bit of my time, I've also been really busy either with family matters, sorting out building issues (looks like we will be seeking legal help as we think the builder has been fraudulent) plus I've been playing the Elder Scrollls Online Beta test.
I've wanted to play as much as possible of this Beta version, because I'm uncertain as to whether I'll be buying the game (The Elder Scrolls is one of my favorite games of all time (together with the ArmA series, Grand Theft Auto series, Fallout series and Just Cause series of games).
Unfortunately Bethesda are asking for approximately £50/$80 to pre order the standard version of the game or £70/$112 for the Deluxe version (which gives you access to a steed, a pet and Imperial armour, plus the ability to craft any armour to imperial armour (I think the only advantage is that it looks cool), plus at least another £10 to £12 a month for subscription. Considering I play a lot of different games all the time (can't concentrate on any one game for extended periods since my acident, I doubt I'd be playing it enough to justify such expense, so this beta testing has given me the oppertunity to play the game excessively from Friday evening till Monday. :)
Anyway, to the point:
To write up the review I played Alawars demo for an hour and found that the phone problem wasn't an issue. (others have also indicated that free versions from MPC will do the same) I hadn't bothered installing the giveaway version until late this evening and found that once installed it played from where I left off when playing the demo.
If you download the demo from Alawar and play that till you are past the phone, the problem should be solved; you will find the profile you set up using the giveaway version will be available when you've installed and booted up the demo. I suggest that you only use the demo to get past the phone stage, then return to the giveaway version. Keep the demo, just in case there are any more phone issues later in the game.
You can download the demo HERE. As some have suggested you can also use the free version from MPC, but I suggest using the Alawar demo version to avoid the pitfalls of MPC games.
That's an interesting observation Dragonlair. I'll have to check it out when I have time. At the moment MPC games are forcing me to install the toolbar or change my browser, so I've not installed an MMPC version in a while.
I tend to avoid the free games now except the odd one from Jenkat games due in part to a large Steam collection (as well as Desura, Gamersgate and other games from various sources such as GOG, Alawar, Game Fly and Big Fish games. I purchased over 900 older (more than 3 years old now) arcade games from the now defunct Reflexive Arcade many of which are now available free from places like MPC and Jenkat (I think it was you Dragonlair who first introduced me to Jenkat) :)

Thanks to all for the replies. Late last night I decided on the MyPlayCity approach, which has got me past the phone problem. I already have various security features on my PC which help in preventing the likes of that site from making unwanted modifications to my machine.

I used the demo from Big Fish Games so that is another option that works the same way. I just used it to get past the phone problem, but kept it in case there are any problems. With an hour of playing allowed by the demos, I am hoping that is plenty of time to get past any problem areas.
BFG does install their game manager interface that is used for their games, but that shouldn't be an issue for anyone that already has it installed like I do. For others, it isn't really intrusive, but you may want to consider the Alawar demo instead.
I do wonder how we got a broken version here when other sites work fine. GotD and Alawar should re-run this here with a repaired version for those that were unable to get it working.

Just a word of advice to those using the workaround install- keep it installed. At one point during the train scene the game exited and logged a crash in the nb2_x.txt file. Restarting the game just initiated the crash again upon loading the same screen. So once again, I installed the MPC version, ran it, and got past that point since it worked fine without crashing.
