I came across this game created by Arcen games (the creators of AI Wars and Tidalis) while checking out the deals on Didamatic. It's called A Valley without Wind. A procedurally generated 2D side scrolling adventure, which the developers say is of limitless proportions (seeing as it's procedurally generated - meaning no two levels will be alike as they are randomly generated).
You can see a slide show of about 20 images HERE
You have to survive and explore a vast persistent world filled with dangerous creatures powerful magic and ancient technology; (sounds vaguely like Terraria, though it's nothing like it). Later you will be able to play the game online with friends and help them create settlements, gathering resources to craft items and weapons, while fending off evil invaders. The multiplayer/coop isn't included with the initial download; at the moment you have to opt in to play that part of the game until they have ironed out all of the bugs. To opt in just visit the developers Wiki which can be found on the main page.
Features:
1) ... Explore the beautiful and dangerous regions of Environ in a sprawling adventure. Travel through lush countryside, ruined towns, deep subterranean caves, and building of all shapes and sizes.
2) ... Procedural generation ensures no two worlds will ever be the same. Your planet unfolds as you discover it, and once you've discovered somethig it becomes part of your Environ for good.
3) ... Take command of survivor settlements. Scout surrounding areas for rare crafting materials and fend off invaders in the turn based strategic overlay. Improve resident productivity and quality of life through the city building interface at each settlement.
4) ... Bring to life an infinite amount of characters, settings and stories. You don't just represent an individual, you represent an entire civilization and its indomitable will to survive in a shattered world.
5) ... Everywhere has treasures to discover, people to help, and evils to comfort. Craft a variety of spells, scrolls, and traps to help you on your way.
6) ... During Beta, there are new updates nearly every weekday ([i]when I installed the downloaded beta I had nearly 40 updates to install). These are packed with additional content, improvements and much more
On the site it says full version will probably release in the first quarter of this year, but things can easily change.
