   Does anyone in this forum use Thunderbird? If so, are you having problems with it, like hanging unexpectedly (often, meaning a reboot) or refusing to change to the Inbox when you want it to? Also, very update removes the tabbed items which I keep until I have dealt with them and they were a reminder to me as soon as I looked at my emails, hence I dealt with them quicker.

   Thunderbird just updates automatically (nearly as often as Firefox) and I have had lots of little problems that so far I have been able to sort out, but are very annoying as they happen nearly daily. I have stopped the automatic updating now in the hopes of getting a stable copy and keeping it which so far hasn't happened. I even wish could go back to a stable Thunderbird, but I don't even know how far back that would be now, I suspect quite a few updates have been made since then, as I often lose my tabs now. (Well, I did until I stopped the automatic updates, but sadly I still don't have a reliable Thunderbird.)

   For the refusal to change to my Inbox I hunted through Thunderbird and found a repair prog which sorted that problem out, but till I found that, I was ready to throw my laptop out the window. It is amazing what you learn or find when you can't get to your Inbox no matter how many times you reboot.

   I'm curious to know if others are having problems like this or if it is just my ageing laptop, purchased in 2005/6 and running XP Pro with 1.5gb ram. I am probably taxing it severely as I have 3 external hard drives (all powered), a powered 10 port hub, and a strong cooling pad running off it as well as all the detritus that I deem necessary to my life nearly filling it. The internal dvd writer has also given up the ghost and reverted to a DVD-RAM or CD drive only so when I need to I have to remove one of the external drves to use an external dvd burner.

   I would welcome comments from other users.

   Has the version 10.0 update actually completed and been installed?

   Go to Help about and check the version (and whether the update is still trying to download). I fixed one of my parents PCs yesterday - the complaint was it was downloading email too slowly, so they restarted it - same problem.

   When I checked - the update wasn't getting a chance to download fully then install and restart. Once all of the update business had a chance to download & install, things seemed to run a little more smoothly.

   For users on dialup - this process would be even more painful.

   Mostly what I get on both Thunderbird and Firefox is "not responding" when I'm trying to reply to an email or change web pages! Takes forever for that to go away, sometimes need to reboot to restart things on that!

   Try disabling the plug-ins and see if that fixes your problem. You could also try the opposite, update Firefox and Thunderbird to the latest versions and then update all plug-ins and add-ons. I'm running FF version 6.0 and Thunderbird version 9.0.1 and don't seem to have any problems but I've quit using a lot of add-ons and plug-ins over the years because of version incompatibilities. I've also gotten off the Mozilla update cycle because I want to use the software, not test it.

   Hi Chris, I don't have any addons or plug-ins whatsoever for Thunderbird, like you I just want to use the program. I got off the Thunderbird merry-go-round at the same version as you are using,and I have no idea if there have been further updates.

   However, I do have some addons and plugins for Firefox, although not a whole lot. I have stopped on Version 3.6.26 but even before that it wasn't very stable. Occasionally I can't even get into it, but like I said somewhere else, I just load up Chrome and use that until Firefox decides it better pull its socks up before I dismiss it altogether, which still could happen.

   Bubby I checked out the update process and it seems to be finished. At the moment (fingers crossed) Thunderbird is working reasonably well. Perhaps that's because I have now bought a Windows 7 laptop courtesy of my daughter who got a $6,000+ tax refund and gave me $2,000 of it for doing all the accounting and because she is a general wonderful daughter. It has got Win 7 Home Premium, 8gb RAM, so I will install the latest Mozilla products, plus Chrome to hedge my bets and maybe Incredimail to teach Thunderbird a lesson. It is sitting beside the naughty, ancient laptop, we will see how we go now.

   Copmom, I too, get a lot of Not Responding on Firefox (never Thunderbird), although particularly on my daughter's baby laptop. In fact, every time I go into Firefox on her laptop (usually late at night when I can't sleep) I can guarantee getting that message usually on startup but sometimes later on too.

   Thank you to you all, I appreciate your comments and I am glad that I'm not alone with my Mozilla Woes.

   Nola, did you actually check if Thunderbird had any plug-ins loaded? Mine uses the same plug-ins as FF, which I can enable/disable separately in each program, and I'm pretty sure that Thunderbird just copied them from FF without any direct action on my part. If you didn't check, click "Tools", then "Add-ons" and the "Add-on Manager" should open on the "Plug-ins" page. If you're running a much newer version of Thunderbird than FF then it's possible the plug-ins need to be updated. Unfortunately, that will likely require a FF update because the new plug-in may not run with the old FF version despite any claims of "backward compatibility".

   Nola, Don't get Incredimail..unless you pay for it. The free one has spyware and you don't want that on your new laptop.

   Check out Eudora OSE - MozillaWiki - https://wiki.mozilla.org/Eudora_OSE It's light and it's open source. If you decide to get an older version of the Pro.. I have a code..would just have to find it. Message me.

   Chris, I never knew that about Thunderbird also having the Firefox add-ons, although I checked my addons in Thunderbird and it said I didn't have any.

   Delenn13, that was very, very handy to know about Eudora. I used to always use Incredimail and I loved it, but I guess I grew up and got tired of choosing a different pretty background for every email I sent, which was fine when I didn't get or send much mail, but not any more.

   Anyway, I went out and bought a Win 7 laptop a couple of days ago, and have been busy setting that up. (The jury is out on whether I will find Win 7 to be as good as XP was, it seems mighty slow sometimes when I don't expect it to be, and I heartily dislike never knowing if an external drive is loading or even a disk in the disk drive.)

   But, I have installed the latest version of Firefox (10.something - I'm on my old XP laptop just now as I didn't have my password for the new lappy so I couldn't write this without it.) and the latest version of Thunderbird on the new one. I loaded Eudora (thank you Delenn13) but I found it a little disconcerting after so many years of deleting emails on the right hand side to suddenly have to go high on the left hand side so I went back to Thunderbird and all seems well so far.

   Hopefully, if I have no add-ons at all, and with 8gbs RAM, I will now be problem free! Thank you all for your help and comments.

   Check out MakeUseOf Guides - http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/download.
   They have have lots of PDF's with illustrations and loads of info. The one you NEED to look at is..."The Ultimate Windows 7 Guide". This will help you with Win7. But there are others you might find interesting also. You have to sign up for their newsletters..which is really worth it, IMO, and you get the password to download ALL these very fine manuals.

   You also get access to their Cheat Sheets, If you use "hot keys". I don't, because of my headaches and memory loss. I never remember them. I printed the dang things out..then forgot to use them. It's quicker for me to do it the "old fashion way".

   Oh, and if you like stationery..Here's a site you will love. I have been using this site for years and years. I will stake my life on it for..NO Spyware..etc.

   OT: For your tab problems on Firefox..I don't have time to write all about it..But check out/Google an addon called "BarTab". It remembers all the tabs..but it only opens them when you need them. You have to refresh the page to open them. Saves on resources..TTFN

    Delenn13, I have had some fun this morning with the Make Use Of site. I have been receiving their newsletters forever, but must admit to not reading them lately, I'm sure they come through every day. Still I have downloaded and printed out a pile of pdfs for bedtime reading, thank you very much. The more I get into Win 7, the less I seem to understand it, although I know I am comparing the way I did things in XP to how I am trying to do things now.

    One good thing, my oldest grandson (13) is coming up for the weekend and he knows Win 7 inside out, hopefully so will I by the time he leaves. He brings up his laptop sometimes and I tell him how I do something in XP and he reproduces it in Win 7, so it will be interesting to see if I can see a dvd loading, etc. At the moment I keep wanting to go back to XP as things seem so much easier there.

    Back to Thunderbird, if I do a Mozbackup (already done, thanks to Graylox) on my XP machine, can I restore it into the Win 7 Thunderbird? I realise that if I can, it will wipe out all I've got in there now, but I will just send the existing Win 7 emails off to my email address again and extend the time that Thunderbird gets emails in so that I have time to load the backup first.
