I have just installed this program but when I try to activate it I get the message that it cannot connect to giveawayoftheday and to check my firewall. This is the first time I have had this problem and I have not made any changes to the firewall. Has anyone else had this problem?
Posted 17 years ago # -
I have not found any problems with activation or installation.
I have used this item before and would advise to steer-clear.
Posted 17 years ago # -
@kats0110 - make sure the program has been closed when you run activate.exe
close the program from the system tray icon.FWIW - activation & installation work fine for me. I'm about to try out the uninstallation now.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get the program to arrange the icons on a specific monitor. I am running Dual Monitors and when I use the program it moves all the icons to the secondary.

Downloaded desktop icon toy and I am having big problems with it! When i click on an icon it takes 2-3 mins to open and then everything freezes up. The system just crashes. I'am using XP. Tryed rebooting but keeps happening. Can't even get to system restore. This is a big problem. Can anyone help?

I am having the same issue. It will not become a real version. Is that the gimmick, we are just downloading a 14day trial and we have to purchase it, if we want to keep it? Guess this is just another 'gotcha' site like the rest of the world is putting up. Sure wich there was someone honest and to the point in this world.

DrJ, I've been coming to Giveawayoftheday almost since it first started, and I can tell you, the site is real with no gimmicks. If you didn't activate the program during the 24 hour time period that you need to, though, then you are going to get a trial version of the software. You have to download, activate, and install the software on the day it's offered. Then you get a full-fledged, working version. I know of only one time that there was a problem, but it wasn't the fault of this site, it was a mistake by the software company and it was rectified.

conceptcad,
You may want to uninstall the program and do a virus scan; we're all going to have to uninstall in 13 days since the "activate" didn't work. Before you uninstall make sure you do a "Restore Layout" and turn off all the hover effects (that should make it work as though you don't have the program). If that makes everything start working then maybe you are low on memory or graphics card is having a conflict. I'm on XP Pro and I have no delays or issues with the icons. From a programming standpoint, there should be no issue with the usage of a lnk from this program; unless you are doing the clock, which will change it's layout every minute.Hope that helps ya.

conceptcad,
That's good to know. This is my first visit and I did download, activate and install yesterday. It said there was over 9 hours left for activation. I clicked on the activate many times but I still have a trial version, just like everyone else is stating on this product. Maybe it is a vendor issue so hopefully they'll get it fixed. I'll trust ya and give them another try.Posted 17 years ago # -
actually, we ALL won't have to uninstall in 13 days just those that didn't pay attention to the readme file for activation. My copy is registered just fine
Posted 17 years ago # -
I did pay attention and it has screwed up my system. The program was activated as I read in the notes. I lost all the titles under the icons and then decided to unistall it , thats when the problems started. Still need help.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Are you able to reinstall the program, and turn the titles back on again, then uninstall?
Posted 17 years ago # -
No I can,t because everything freezes even the mouse, on startup.
Posted 17 years ago # -
What about safe mode? (and hold down the shift key when logging in to bypass the startup folder items etc)

Lee ,
-I wish u would've posted that in the comments sec.!! --Did u advise GAOTD to "steer-clear"???
=====================================================================================I hate this thing, -what a pain, -doesn't work correctly & messes everything up!!! :
1] If u un-check the 'show shortcut overlay' -[Toggle Menu]- the next time u try to save a document to a shortcut folder on your desktop the folder won't appear in your 'save-to' desktop Menu!!!
2] 'Hiding of the Icons'=
[a] the text will disappear but the background-'colored-box'-[that surrounded the text] is not only left behind but now runs as one long box in each row across the desktop !!! >>[even when the "show text background" option is UN-checked!!]
[b] The "hide when off desktop" isn't working properly: first the icons wouldn't hide at all; then they wouldn't reappear!! --Had to switch to 'hide when off icon' to get them back.3] Biggest Problem =
I was looking at the 'layouts' to see if there was a option for your original layout -[there isn't ]- & it accidentally chose one and the icons automatically moved on my desktop. I closed it w/out pressing the 'OK' button but it didn't reverse it. -[I thought that's what the 'OK' was for -to say yes to the changes & it'll stick !!??]
Their website says:
Q: Desktop Icon Toy changed my icons' position, how do I restore them?
A: First time to run the Desktop Icon Toy, it will automatically save your own icons' position. So you can use the "Restore Layout" menu to restore them.---But I tried this over & over and it doesn't work !!!!!
Now I don't know what to do. I just want to get it back to normal so I can un-install this piece of junk! I tried the other layouts to find something I could work w/ but they're all mess up! Every one just squishes all the icons together!! --You can't even see them to work w/ them!!!
>Anyone eles have this happen?<******* NEED HELP PLEASE!!!--ANY IDEAS ????*******

Posted 17 years ago # -
Isn't the default layout - right click on system tray icon - Align to... Left.
The Align To Left doesn't squish the icons together. (and to think I had to reinstall this POS to check the option name. LOL)
Posted 17 years ago # -
LOL !!! >>{THANKS BuBBy, I NEEDED THAT!..[and SORRY,,-VERY SORRY!!],..-still LnOL :D !!}
~~~Came to post an update: after messing w/ the POS some more [uggh,-so many wasted hrs!],... -I finally figured out the culprit to the squishy problem = it happens when the 'Show Small Icon' is checked [-Toggle Menu] for some absurd reason !
-Doesn't make any sense but that's what was doing it. I unchecked it and had one of the align-tos' checked and everything spread out again {wheew..!,-panic over!}--Didn't fix my 'original-positions' though; nor did it put it back in my 'original order' -even though I have that option checked under 'layouts'.
Screw-it! --Just glad to have them back where I can SEE them!!! ...-[see them so I can put them ALL back in order by hand!!--errrf!!!]In my frustration I've come up w/ an additional solution to the icon dilemma -[I just wanted something to quickly hide & unhide the damn things & this thing cant even do that!!!] ......I digress; this is my new solution, -[hopefully, -gonna try as soon as I get rid of this thing 1st!],,...:
--WHAT DO YA THINK? -Heard of it? -Better ideas Anyone??"""Posted 17 years ago # -
I just thought of something:
You know when u right click on yr desktop & it says 'Arrange Icons by:',
then it says: 'Show Desktop Icons'-(w/ a check next to it).
--Well what happens if u uncheck that?
I'm assuming-[hoping] that they will disappear until u recheck it, -then they'll magically reappear! --Which is exactly what I've been wanting -[I had forgot that was there 'till now]- But I have never tried it and after the last hrs. I've had I ain't messin w/ nothin till I get a sworn testimony!!!!
;IX ......any swearers out there?Posted 17 years ago # -
You assume correctly. (I'll leave the swearing up to you).
I installed and activated the Desktop Icon Toy (It's a cute program and nice to have,
but definitely a non-essential!) on the day it was available, and it was working fine. Now (9 days later) I get a message at the bottom of my screen saying "Desktop Icon Toy- unregistered, 5 days left."Are they having a problem with their activation algorithm? Please advise!
Hello everyone,
The Icon Toy hasn't stopped working just because of a user-installation/lack of registration error. The first thing I ever do is check to see who the software is registered to before anything else.
I'd reported this on another thread some time ago.
I actually found the toy easy to use and I had NO problems with it whatsoever while it was working. I enjoyed it, loved it in fact as it kept my desk top clean, tidy and creative.
Pity GotD prefers that it's members don't contact each other (confirmed!) or I'd suggest emailing the company with one letter, supported by the email addresses of everyone affected, (similar to a petition.) This could/would be an effective way of contacting the developers, outlining the (same) issues with the software experienced by a group of people.
~ SwanPosted 17 years ago # -
I haven't gotten Desktop Icon Toy - one of the things I wasn't really interested in and ignored without saying anything - but oddly, I don't see anything anywhere on GotD's site saying how long a particular piece of software will work. It's strange...
Pity GotD prefers that it's members don't contact each other (confirmed!)
That's not confirmation. BuBBy said "in terms of encouraging users" - else why are these forums here? That was on the topic of Yahoo 360 - GotD is not a social networking website; I think this is all BuBBy was trying to tell you.
I'd suggest emailing the company with one letter, supported by the email addresses of everyone affected, (similar to a petition.)
By all means, DO suggest that people do this - this is what's referred to as filing a bug report. Every developer encourages this. Do it: No-one's stopping you. Create a thread, ask people to do that: E-mail companies of which there are severe bugs in the software. If they don't know, how can they patch it, or even give you a new registration? Maybe it IS a bug in the software that only triggers under certain conditions. Maybe they already know about it. Have you asked them yet?
Hi Keilaron and others,
That's not confirmation. BuBBy said "in terms of encouraging users" - else why are these forums here?
You're right of course. I just let irritation get the better me. However, the negative experiences (of some ) people here are rising incrementally, as more people experience one or more of the following - more often:
* software totally breaks user's hard drive - requiring a reformat, OR;
* they can't download the software (problem with access, or file removed) OR;
* when it does download, the zip files are corrupt, OR;
* a game (or other software) might not/will launch, but hang, requiring a reboot etc., etc.
Maybe it IS a bug in the software that only triggers under certain conditions. Maybe they already know about it. Have you asked them yet?
Not with this little gem - no. I wrote three times to Glary Utilities and twice to the developers of some game that I also had problems with, but met with disappointment every time when it became apparent that I wasn't going to receive any replies.
When these things occur together in a relatively short period of time, you just kind of lose your momentum and interest in going that far.
Thanks for your reply Keilaron,
Glary? Oh. I thought we were still talking about Desktop Icon Toy. Says iDeskSoft here.
Posted 17 years ago # -
i want free and registered desk top icon toy can you give me...pls
Posted 16 years ago # -
You will just have to wait 'till the programme is offered again,it has been offered at least twice,so will probably be back.
Posted 16 years ago # -
I wouldn't bother...when you remove it, it messes up everything! More of a hassle than it's worth...even for free,lol!
