Computerworld - Mozilla developers have given the green light to ship Firefox 10 on Tuesday.
Notes from a Mozilla meeting last week said that the upgrade was on for Jan. 31
or 01 feb nz time ?
Firefox 10 will also be the first edition in the Extended Support Release (ESR)

I got upgraded easily and then checked my add-ons and plug-ins. Add-ons (only 3 or 4) were fine. I had my plug-ins check for updates (most are auto-installs from elsewhere and are unknown to Firefox). It did say my Java and Silverlight were outdated so I updated them. (with FF not loaded). It took a REBOOT, not a "Refresh" from what Firefox said to get it to recognize the new Silverlight.
Other than that, no problems updating.

Thank you Graylox, I downloaded everything you so clearly listed out except for one item that I don't think I will need. (and that wasn't the backup program, which I already had an earlier version of).

As for Firefox, on this laptop (my main one) I am still using Firefox 3.something. And, yes, I have problems with it. Sometimes it refuses to load, so I just go to Chrome for that day which has all my imported tabs and bookmarks from Firefox. That makes Firefox sit up and take notice, and it usually behaves for the next few days.
My daughter's baby laptop is running Firefox 9 but I suspect that I should have left it at Firefox 3. something too as it only has minimal 512mb ram and can't be upgraded (because the ram is netbook ram, hundreds of dollars to upgrade here, better to buy a new laptop.) So, it takes absolutely forever to load. (I'm talking 9 minutes from turning it on to having Firefox ready to go with 3 tabs maximum).
So, I don't think I will be going to Firefox 10 any time soon, although my main laptop has 1.5gb. Both laptops run XP Pro. I am intending to purchase a new laptop later this year when I have saved enough money, probably by then it will be Windows 8 and Firefox 15, lol.

Firefox 10.0.1 is out http://www.neowin.net/news/firefox-1001 - no release notes up yet [as I type this anyway] but AFAIK the 0.1 updates usually fix bugs & gotchas & such that slipped into a version release.

Generally part of major version updates for each browser release, regardless brand, are security related.
Far as browsers go, there are quite a few alternatives, many with portable versions so you can try them out before making the commitment to install. Many people forget about, or maybe never heard of Opera, plus there are several efforts that are based on major browsers but [probably not the best choice of words] re-imagined by another developer or developer team. Maxthon is one http://www.neowin.net/news/maxthon-3342000 but there are several others like Seamonkey -- you can get both of those in portable versions at portableapps.com. I don't know how up to date it is, but there's a table listing several alternative browsers at the bottom of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser .
Guys, if only for security, you really need to update those browsers....as mikiem2 said.

See if compacting the sql databases helps loading FF.
CCleaner has a feature to compact FF's databases.
Also try to clear cache&cookies on a regular base.
Using a portable FF,like mikiem said, is my favorite way.
(I keep a portable FF ever since FF 3 up till 9,and I keep switching from one version to another)
Still.. on my old XP machine FF 3.26 tends to loads slower than the newer versions.
Also..I'm using the "memory fox" addon to improve memory management,mainly because usually I have a lot tabs active.
Just noticed PortableApps has a portable version of FF 1O.01 ready for download.
(so...wondering if the claim that all FF4 extensions will be compatible is true)

Hi Robert, Thank you for that. I will download CCleaner, which I don't use at present, and give compacting the databases a go. Also will try and find the 'memory fox' add-on, I too have a lot of tabs active (10 permanently, others come and go) and I'm forever getting the "Well, this is embarrassing, Firefox can't restore your tabs...blah, blah, blah" which is mostly sorted by pressing the Restore button. So maybe 'memory fox' will help with that.
I must admit I don't like to clear the cookies, I hate when I get on an often-used site for them not to know me and I have to type in heaps of extra stuff! I also thought the cache might take away all my history and urls I have already used and I use both for the times that dear Firefox can't restore my tabs and I have to load the lot again. The 10 permanent ones I know off by heart, but not the other temporary ones. I hate to give myself extra work.
OT - Wll email you soon, may have a couple more train disks too, if you want them.

No it's not the same. Speedy fox is a type of optimizer. Firefox uses a database to store every settings and all of the addons you may use. As time goes by the database becomes bigger and fragmented. SpeedyFox optimizes it and compacts it without loosing any of the data stored in the database.
It's comrable to the way we defragment our hard drives. Both processes speed up reading of the data, so speeding up Frefox's boot up time.
