I would like a reply as to why "Link Advisor" gives your hosting site a "HIGH RISK" rating:
Site: wikifortio.com
Owner: Hides its identity
Unknown site owner location
This is of great concern as why would a Company hide its details especially one that is operating in such a environment as yours??
My advice is people beware!!!!!
wikifortio a Security Risk??

This site is fairly new so I would suggest that your linkadvisor thingy needs getting up to date. I have been coming here almost every day since december 2006 and have NEVER had a problem with the site.
It's safe - fear not.btw. WOT, another similar firefox add on that I use reckons it's ok too.
Mcafee SiteAdvisor originally had it wrong too but now gives it a safe rating.

Hello M8ty,
I've been coming here for many months now and I always have McAfee SiteAdvisor showing. They have thoroughly tested this site and give a full review, ultimately saying that this site is ok to be on and to download.
I have no qualms about being here and I'm very security conscious.
Hope that sets your mind at rest! ;)

FABScott & Swan,
Link Advisor give real time reports. I agree with you both that GAOTD is classified as safe,& take your comments on board, but it's the P2P Company (wikifortio.com) that is getting the "High Risk" rating? also I asked the same question today in "Comments" and GOATD deleted my post??! I ask why?? as all they needed to do was say it is a safe & recommended company for me to use to download today's screen saver??? no need to delete my post?

Site Advisor does the same job and has a much larger database - I just tried Link Advisor, seems OK but I'll stick with mine for now. :)

Hi FABScott,
Dude I just entered http://www.wikifortio.com/ into Siteadvisor's database as it's not in there? They are doing a check now.
peace

Hi M8ty,
I think Link Advisor classes a site as risky before it has completely checked it out - whereas SiteAdvisor says it is queued fo testing.
I'm sure if the downloads on here are coming from there it will be ok - I've downloaded loads from here with absolutely no problem whatsoever.
Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it too much if I was you.
:)ps. My other one says it's ok also.

I wondered about "wikifortio" the first time I ended up there without any explanation.
I would have appreciated a note on the page of the day stating something like, "In recent weeks, the number of downloads requested each day from GOTD and GGOTD has risen to astonishing new 'heights' and we wish to express our sincere appreciation to all who download and comment upon the products offered and especially to those of you who continue to spread word of our site. Due to this high demand, especially during peak periods, we now feel your needs will be met most efficiently through referral to a download manager. After careful consideration, we feel confident that "wikifortio" best suits the needs of our clients. We have thoroughly investigated available services and can assure you that "wikifortio" will allow you to download with the same speed and accuracy you have come to expect from GOTD and GGOTD without sacrificing security. We apprecuate your patience as we transition to this new system and encourage you to contact us if you experience any problems."
Something like that would have really helped - I wasn't sure in the beginning that some sort of spyware hadn't intercepted the download process, especially since there was no mention in the comments - because there are people there who'll comment on anything!
Anyhow - It seems to be OK, and I'm glad to read here that people are checking on it, so I'm back to downloading!

if you don't like Wikifortio (I don't), just use the mirror links.

I still say People BewareI still cannot understand the idea people have that whatever they submit, should appear on the site - if it doesn't appear then it is some coverup.
If you write a letter to the editor of a newspaper - if it isn't on a relevant topic it is published. If it is too long - it gets edited. If 20 other people have written letters on the same thing - they might only publish the best one.
At any rate, everyone is told to only comment specifically on the software. Technical problems or issues with the site belong in the forums. Yet people insist on writing comments - so instead of talking about the software we end up with a discussion on something that happenned last week, or website security.
Post it in the correct area and it will not be "deleted".
And before you point out other comments that are not about the software - they may have slipped through or overlooked. But don't complain that the rules were correctly applied to your post. There are many posts that don't appear on the site because people cannot follow guidelines, or are abusive - of course most people assume that they have been singled out - which is not the case.

Yeah but do you like wiki-watchacallit? ;)

It does it's job. I don't have a problem with it?
What exactly is supposed to be so terrible about it?
Posted 17 years ago # -
I can only speak for myself here, but I like for things that say "download here" to be links to files. If there was some kind of notice that clicking the links will take you to a download page, it might be a little less... disagreeable? I dunno.
I think the fact that I'd not heard of wikifortio before also doesn't help. I recognize names like CNet and Sourceforge, so I understand what I'm getting at a place like that.
but as I said above, I'm just using the mirror links instead...
Posted 17 years ago # -
Were you as concerned when the files were hosted using the service http://filekicker.com ?
http://wikifortio.com/ is now providing the same service.
In both cases you are "getting" the same files that are uploaded by the GOTD Team.
If you feel "safer" - the same files are available from the mirror link.
As long as at least one of the two links work - I'm happy.
Posted 17 years ago # -
Did filekicker have a download page, or was it just a link to the file? I think it was the latter, and that's why I didn't notice/care.
and also, download pages increase the number of clicks. I know, I know, one extra click for some free software - plus the added minigame of finding the *actual* download link - yes, yes, I just use the mirror links.

Certainly stimulated discussion?? Do I detect just a little annoyance from the Moderator? Posts on the Daily DL's ARE deleted if they in any way question the integrity of GAOTD while referring to the daily download!
Reference http://wikifortio.com/ the query being discussed here!?
Why would they hide all their I.D. Information from the outside World??
As FABScott asks:
Yeah but do you like wiki-watchacallit? ;)
That's all I am querying, are they sound or not? the answer don't use them!! use a mirror site instead? only adds more credence to my concerns?
I still say "People Beware"

No. It's called confusion. I have no idea exactly what your problem is.Posts on the Daily DL's ARE deleted if they in any way question the integrity of GAOTD while referring to the daily download!
Question the integrity of GAOTD? No. The download comments are supposed to be comments about the download program. What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? Why it is good? Why it is bad? It's not that complicated. If you want conspiracy theories - break out the tin foil hats and post in the forums instead. Why would they hide all their I.D. Information from the outside World??
It is to do with not wanting your address, phone number and email address to be made available to every crackpot spammer and whatever in the world. The domain is registered with GoDaddy.com and registered in the name "Domain By Proxy"https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/dbp/landing.asp?ci=9002

Thanks for all the information above.
I have to agree with Face and Jucati, it would have been nice for GGotD to post a friendly note on the front page or a mention in their Project Team’s blog about the change in download procedure.
I came here to forums because for the last week or so I thought the links for the mirror page vs. direct download were reversed by mistake. I’ve been clicking “mirror link#1” which gave me the zip file to download. I too was put off by the mirror site. For me the reason is the poor English. I questioned the validity and security of the site even without alerts popping up. On wikifortio there is merely an excerpt from the game description given on the main page of Game Giveaway of the Day.
Perhaps because of their contract, those game descriptions seem to come directly from the developers without editing. For some reason things like this bother me. I do understand that English may nor be the native language of wikifortio or many of the game developers. I also believe minor improvements such as a human proofreader for context (not just spell check) could improve their business. The same could be said for GGotD who puts the same descriptions on their main page. Perhaps none of this has occurred to GGotD, the game developers or wikifortio although I have seen spelling and grammar mentioned many times in the comments. Perhaps the expense is too great. I intend this only as a suggestion to a company for whom I have developed quite a fondness. I certainly wish them success.
But I digress. Let me get this straight because I don’t really understand the purpose of mirror sites. GGotD prefers we download the games from another company, wikifortio?
