Which(21Mb)
Here is another excellent horror adventure for this weekend’s fright fest. Be warned, it does contain violence, blood and gore, so, yes we are approaching Halloween again! It is on the short side, but has items to find and use, doors to unlock and a few puzzles to solve, to get to either of two endings.
‘Which’ has some real very frightening moments; and being played in the gloom or half-light in monochrome black and white, it preys very much on the primeval fear of the dark and the unknown and of lurking unspeakable horrors. There’s a minimal soundtrack to reinforce the tension and heighten ‘expectations’. You are in a dark house of horrors only very minimally illuminated from the windows (moonlight?) from which you try to escape.
I deliberately don’t want to say too much about the situation or plot. I could add a fair bit, but it is best to play the game knowing as little as possible as this adds considerably to the atmosphere and nervousness in playing the game. You literally then don’t know what’s around any corner.
Controls are ‘Arrow’ keys (or ‘W,A,S,D’ keys) to move, mouse to look, left mouse button to interact, and right mouse button to crouch. Fortunately, the mouse ‘looking’ is linked to subsequent move direction, and you can hold down the ‘Up’ arrow key and move forward using the mouse to control the direction you move in. In some confined spaces, you might find it easier to use the ‘Arrow’ keys in conjunction with the right mouse button to crouch. Things you can interact with are highlighted if you look in the correct direction from the correct position. ‘Esc’ key or ‘Alt’ + ‘F4’ to quit.
There are three versions in the download, a lower resolution one, a high resolution one and a red/cyan 3D version needing red/cyan glasses. Gameplay is the same for all three versions. It works (and plays full-screen) in XP, Vista and Win 7 provided your graphics card supports Pixel Shader 2; as most fairly modern graphics cards do. It played straight off on a Win 7 laptop, though on my Win 7 computer with a mid-range NVidia card I had to set the advanced graphics option for the game with the NVidia control panel to force Vertical Synchronisation (Vert Sync) on, before the game would display. The game loads with you facing a window, from then on it’s up to you!
'Which' uses simple graphics and sound to very great effect! It just shows what can be done to get the graphics and sound to really spook you! If this doesn’t spook you, I don’t know what will!
It’s probably best played without viewing the video as you then have no idea what to expect! It’s a very moody and atmospheric game! These may well be the few very creepiest minutes of your gaming life!
'Which' is a really tense game, with you not knowing what to expect next. Like with ‘Candles’, it’s best played late on, with the lights out and headphones on if necessary to cut out ambient or distracting sounds. This one may haunt you for some time afterwards if you complete it! Which way will you turn, which path will you take and which doors will you dare try to open, which choices will you make? And yes, it does matter which!
