   On the regular GOTD page I posted the high registry impact I recorded installing StepShot in win7 32 & 64 bit VMs -- I'd definitely suggest setting a Restore Point in win7 prior to installing & trying it out. From that post: "... couldn't get a figure in win7 32 because the amount was too large & stalled/crashed InstallWatch Pro, while in win7 64 the Regshot2 report stalled/crashed ie9, but I could open the text log [114.5 MB] which says 194859 new keys, 288789 new values [scrolling through the listing didn't see any of the usual temporary keys I've seen when figures have gotten this high in the past]".

   Adding StepShot to XP was reasonable for something using Windows Installer, but adding/updating .NET 4 is not a quick task in XP -- again from that post...

   Adding .NET 4 to XP Pro SP3... The download [that will be installed from StepShot install] is "dotNetFx40_Client_x86_x64.exe" -- http://goo.gl/2fiu5 -- recorded 774 files added, 39 files modified, 8136 registry entries added, 2496 registry entries modified. Note that the already somewhat slow installs may be slowed further by AV software, e.g. Microsoft Security Essentials was active consuming CPU for much of these .NET & related installs. 1st update was KB2518870 -- http://goo.gl/ZYtwg -- recorded 84 files added, 161 files modified, 548 registry entries added, 212 registry entries modified. Selected at the same time as the 1st update, KB2478663 initially failed, but installed separately afterward -- http://goo.gl/SvP85 -- recorded 70 files added, 164 files modified, 371 registry entries added, 226 registry entries modified. Going to the Microsoft Update site again, another hotfix now showed up as important, KB 2539636 -- http://goo.gl/5qWf6 -- recorded 75 files added, 187 files modified, 1306 registry entries added, 159 registry entries modified. Back at Microsoft Update, 2 .NET 4 hotfixes were listed, but nothing under the important heading this time. The 1st was KB2468871 -- http://goo.gl/QG3z4 -- recorded 78 files added, 181 files modified, 573 registry entries added, 152 registry entries modified. And 2nd, KB 2533523 -- http://goo.gl/Onbap -- recorded 72 new files added, 178 files modified, 602 registry entries added, 152 registry entries modified. Note that if you have Windows auto-update on, it's quite possible that these updates may happen in the background while trying to install &/or 1st run StepShot. Note also that those figures are based on before/after snapshots, & some of the files & registry entries recorded are temporary -- I didn't try to break them down further, intending this more as a rough guide of what you can expect.

   Note that there is a tool for removing .NET, but it removes it entirely so you have to start from square one & add all the updates. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx

   No NET4 for me on XP 1 & 2 the max I dont like net3 it trys to get in Firefox, as for win 7 it comes with NET4

   Actually Win7 comes with NET 3.5 SP1. NET4 has to be installed separately for Windows 7 users also.

   Note that there is a tool for removing .NET, but it removes it entirely so you have to start from square one & add all the updates.

   After going to all the trouble of getting .NET 4 Client Profile installed on XP (and the associated patches that go with it) - I'd expect the last thing you would want to do is remove it again (only to have to go through everything once again when the next app comes along that requires NET 4).

   Get it running - then leave it installed. You will need it sooner than you think.

   But don't think for a second that NET 4 is where it stops... NET 4.5 is in the Windows 8 Beta.

   Very True, but if .NET 4 broke something &/or it & all the updates don't fully install, that might be your only option if you don't have a backup & don't want to reinstall Windows, & it may be the only way to get .NET 4 & all updates installed/working. Apologies if that original post seemed overly negative, but my concern was those who didn't know what they were getting into beforehand adding .NET 4 -- otherwise wanted to provide the links [huge apologies for the Google urls BTW] in case that made it easier for people who'd rather download & have all that stuff handy rather than dealing with Microsoft Update repeatedly.

   FWIW...
   I have sometimes had problems with XP on different PCs/laptops/VMs after adding .NET 4 -- removing everything, than adding .NET 3.5, then adding .NET 4 has occasionally helped, my guess being that all the updates since v. 2 can leave XP a little mucked up, & adding 3.5 includes v. 2 & quite a few of those updates. .NET also saves lots of info on installed software, & sometimes removing those records is part of fixing problems in Windows. It's unfortunately too common for .NET updates to fail, & removing everything .NET & starting over can be the solution.

   Generally I prefer to leave .NET 4 off of XP simply because there's more of a chance you'll encounter those sorts of problems, & I haven't found any software that was essential *to me* that required it, but in the end it's of course up to the individual user. The more you have the more there is to break &/or cause problems, & .NET 4 adds a Lot. :-) I like the video renderer etc. that .NET 3.5 adds to XP, & usually install it just for that -- it can occasionally make newer, video-related apps work better in my experience. Totally just my personal opinion, given 3 comparable apps, I'll choose the portable one 1st, the regular software 2nd, & the one that uses .NET last. .NET IMHO potentially makes it easier for coders, much like VB, but the overall result is usually less efficient and, while it has less to do with the limits of .NET & more to do with many of the coders who use it, generally doesn't perform as well in terms of features & results. Balancing that a bit, I imagine if it wasn't for things like .NET & VB we wouldn't have as much software to choose from, plus sometimes those apps are your only choice.

   I stop at .NET Framework 2 with XP as I not like Microsoft DirectX in firefox I use Firefox as I don't like the X things like IE most things run ok with .NET 1 & 2 & all that NET get very big so it looks like with windows 8 it have NET 1,2,3,3.5,4,4.5,& no the way 5 & 6 & don't for get 32 & 64 bit NET Framework full your Harddrive up ?
