Earth Jets is another, older top-down shooter by Beau Blyth. You pilot either mechs or low flying jets and it can be played by one or two players, though the two player mode has to be unlocked by playing a difficult single player campaign first! There are some tutorial elements scattered through early stages of the game and two secret ships that can be found.
There a good number of different ships and levels to unlock, but note that two players have to use the same kind of ship (not to give either player an unfair advantage). All of the ships are available once the two player mode is obtainable, again with levels to unlock. The graphics and sound effects are fairly basic. Rather brutally, scenic objects cause damage if you collide with rocks and other objects, which rather significantly adds to the difficulty level. There are a fair number of health packs around, but often rather too many fixed but rotating laser guns targeting you! You can survive for a short time until your air pack runs out in the dark areas ‘off-screen’. Moving enemies appear later on. You have to find out for yourself what the objective is though to complete a level, This could be to reach a target area or to kill so many specific enemies, etc.
Controls are the ‘Arrow’ keys to move, and rather unusually the ‘M’ key to shoot, for player 1. ‘Self-explode’ on the menu quits the game!
This is a competent and fun, if somewhat difficult, top-down shooter!
