Caiman Games not gone! Thankfully a False Alarm

I've been worried about what was going to happen to Caiman Games for several months now. I offered my services to help keep the site up and running, but nothing came of that. now it looks like the site has been finally shut down. It was definitely working yesterday because I downloaded a game for next week’s three year anniversary of our own free games project. This morning the site had become very sluggish and apart from some pages nothing else worked including any download links. Now the site has disappeared altogether.

As yet I don't know whether this is going to be a temporary thing or whether it's permanent? I have to search through my email to find the contact email that I had used to ask if they would like some help. One of the young guys helping out said it would be welcomed but it was up to Rudy Caimans colleague who never got back to me.

I'm hoping that it is only temporary, but to be honest I don't thnk it's looking good, which is a great shame because the site was a fantastic repository of freeware games many of which are not available anywhere else.

I'd actually intended to work through all of the games downloading them to create a backup, but it was a massive undertaking and I just didn't have the energy to do it.

We have linked quite a few of the games in the free games project to the Caiman site; a lot of these (but not all) will have alternative download site. If you are wanting to download a game and the link no longer works just Google the name of the game and you'll hopefully find alternative sites like Acid-Play who host a good collection of games.

Well hopefully this was just a temporary issue. I just went there and downloaded a game without any problems. Would hate to lose Caiman!

That is good new Campy. There was definitely something wrong earlier though. that together wih what I'd been told by one of the caretakers has had me worried for quite some time. Just been too out of it to do anything about it.

Edit, just tried to go to Caiman using their address http://www.caiman.us/ and it takes me to a page that says This is the Plesk default page

if you see this page it means

1) hosting for this domain is not configured
or
2) There's no such domain registered with Plesk

However if I search for a known game plus Caiman I can get to the site for example one of the games I will be posting next week for the third anniversary is a Train sim called Boso View Express. I can still get to that page using the following address:

or a Bomermania game using the follwing address

http://www.caiman.us/scripts/fw/f1291.html

Though when I try to download either it throws up a The Page Cannot Be found message

Hmmmm strange.

Hiya WR, just loaded http://www.caiman.us and it seems fine....there is a note in the middle of the page about moving to a new IP and that was the reason for being offline.

Very relieved on this one. Caiman is one of the very very best free games sites, and as WR says some of the games are not available elsewhere.

It would be a colossal and Herculean task to back up all of the games on Caiman's servers! Even just to find all those only available from Caiman.us.

A change in IP can take up to 24 hours for DNS servers to update, possibly longer for non-US web servers that store all IP addresses and links to them, hence the slight access hiccup.

My understanding from emails from Nicholas is that they will do all they can to keep Caiman.us up and running as the best possible remembrance to Rudy. Even if they do eventually do a new site, they'll keep the old site running because of 1000s of sites (including our forum!) that have links to resources and games there! :)

There is a useful free game depository at http://www.thecomputerroombbs.com/pcbidx.html, where you’ll find the games list in four sections lower down the page. When you download a game, a login screen appears, use bbsuser for the user name and also bbsuser for the password (obtained entirely legitimately from the administrators on the BBS forum!).

Good news people :D First of all thanks a lot for your continuous support. Secondly, the good news. I am 99% sure (and well, that's something seeing as I am 99% pessimistic ;)) that the site will continue. After talking to Ibo, he said that he will be using caiman.us, not the website Dev created. This is because Dev's is incomplete. The way he talked recently removed any doubts I had. I don't know when the site will continue, but hopefully not too late. He said that after he finishes his current work task, he will continue. I speculate that it will be around December or January. However, this isn't set in rock. I am speculating regarding recent events. Could be later or earlier.

Thinking about asking Ibo when the site will be back up. Will tell you if I get an answer.

After some months, a moderator who had to leave us has returned. We three were like the Three Musketeers, so now, I expect we will have more things done :D

We're not dead yet, and if anything, the future looks brighter. For now, we have decided not to tell anything, however, you can expect an announcement on the forum in the following weeks. That's all I can say. Thanks for your patience.
