The Indie Game Legend (21.6 Mb)
This top down shooter and action adventure/explore combined, is a tribute to (and made as a sequel to) the NES classic ‘The Guardian Legend’. As such it contains many in-house jokes, though if you don’t get these it won’t detract from some excellent gameplay. It also features some Indie game makers held as captives for you to rescue, as a parody!
You are a space warrior trying to destroy all of the alien invaders on a small planet Earth-bound to take over the Earth. It will probably help to read the Wiki description for The Guardian Legend at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guardian_Legend rather than me going into more detail about the plot and scenario. You are the only person standing before saving the Earth and all of it’s inhabitants. Defeating the bosses releases captives.
There are 5 areas, containing 125 rooms to explore. You will find items like destructible blocks, data keys and weapon power-ups and pausing the game brings up a map of the area you are in. There are 8 weapons to find and numerous enemies to tackle. You can only gain entrance to some corridors by performing certain actions correctly. Enemies gradually deplete your health over several attacks and you start off with three lives. There are puzzles to solve as well as boss fights at the end of each area. Power-ups are temporary and can be ‘stacked’ with others. There are collectable ‘gems’ that only persist for a short time and add to your ammo, and a health meter on the lives indicator.
You use the ‘W,A,S,D’ keys to move (though I would prefer an option to use the ‘arrow’ keys) and the mouse (or touchpad) and left click to aim and shoot, or you can use a gamepad. I’m not over-fussed on split movement and aiming/shooting as it takes some getting used to and isn’t easy to target and hit when many enemies are approaching at once. The Spacebar acts as a pause and show map/in-game menu screen key, and the ‘Esc’ key quits.
The game plays full-screen in XP, Vista and Win 7. The graphics are colorful and nicely drawn and the game has a cheerful retro soundtrack and music.
It’s a fun game that will have you scratching your head at times. Recommended!
