Saintrooper is a fun platform shooter played in an underwater maze setting. During your rescue mission you save comrades, while looking out for each level’s boss. It’s a Japanese game but the menu is English and easy to navigate.
There's a good bit of exploration involved and sometimes swarms of enemies to tackle, that all the while shoot back at you.
You fight enemies with your blaster, which you can shoot in four different directions. Avoid contact with enemies as well as dodging their shots. Shooting some enemies gives extra items to collect. You grab/stick to walls and seaweed ropes to climb up them, which is a key feature of the game. You have to find oxygen packs to refill your air tanks and need to collect keys to unlock doors. It's a challenging game and you'll sometimes need to surface to an air pocket if you don't find an oxygen tank in time, though oxygen is usually the least of your worries! Special power-up items will temporary increase your firepower and oxygen reserves. You can shoot downwards while falling, to slow down and cushion your landing, to prevent temporarily over-balancing. Holding the jump button extends the jumps. You can also shoot downwards to jump even higher, especially once you have power-ups.
As well as the power-ups, it's good to collect as many treasures as you can, as extra lives are given out fairly generously once you've scored more points. Collecting 3 similar treasures gets triple points. You start off with 3 lives. If you die, you restart from the beginning of the present stage you are on. There are 5 large stages to complete each with large maps to explore, including a bonus stage with an extra difficult boss if you meet certain conditions, which also has a high danger route, as well as a normal route through, if you like real challenges!
The game supports gamepad/joystick or you can use the ’Arrow’ keys to move with the ’Z’ key to jump and the ‘X’ key to shoot (or you can swap these) . ‘Esc’ key to quit. Hold the L/R ‘arrow’ keys while jumping to cling onto walls and climb up them. Use the ’arrow’ keys and ‘Z’ key (to select) to navigate the menu, first move to and select either type 1 or type 2 keyboard/gamepad configuration, then move to stage 1 (the first choice is a Japanese intro sequence). Just delete the game folder to uninstall. It plays in XP, Vista and Win 7, though you might need to select XP compatibility mode and run as administrator in Vista. You are asked at the start if you wish to use a joypad and whether to run full-screen or (re-sizable) windowed mode.
The game has very colorful retro graphics and very retro music/sound effects. It’s a cool and excellent platform game to play and very well worth a download!
